El veredicto
¿Vale la pena para su luna de miel?
Ashford Castle is the honeymoon castle that every other castle hotel is measured against — a genuine 13th-century Anglo-Norman fortress on the shores of Lough Corrib in Cong, County Mayo, immaculately restored by Red Carnation in a $75 million reinvention that finished in 2015. Eighty-three rooms inside the original castle walls, a 350-acre estate that includes Europe's oldest falconry school (since 1959), an indoor pool carved beneath the stone, the spectacular Cullen's at the Cottage and George V dining rooms, and a Cigar Terrace facing the lake at sunset that is one of the most romantic addresses in Europe. What sets Ashford apart from the half-dozen other Irish castle hotels is the operational polish — Red Carnation runs a tighter ship than Relais & Châteaux, with the kind of name-on-arrival, anticipated-need service usually reserved for Asian palace hotels. The estate itself is the other half of the story: a 30-minute walk through the woodland to the village of Cong (where The Quiet Man was filmed in 1952 — the village trades on it but is genuinely lovely), boat trips on Lough Corrib to ruined island monasteries, a 9-hole golf course, archery, clay pigeon, and the iconic falconry walks. The state suites in the original castle (Lord Ardilaun, Stanford White, John Lennon) are some of Europe's most extraordinary hotel rooms, with four-poster beds, original 17th-century carved fireplaces, and lake-facing windows. Even in shoulder season the room rate is firmly in five-figure-stay territory for a week, but Ashford is the one Irish hotel that genuinely earns it. The honeymoon-defining moment, however, is small: 5pm, fire lit, two whiskeys in the Drawing Room, the lake reddening through 400-year-old leaded windows, and the realisation that this is exactly what you flew here to feel.

Recomendación de habitación
Qué habitación reservar
A State Suite in the original castle (Stanford White or Lord Ardilaun) is the honeymoon room of rooms — generous square footage, four-poster, working fireplace, lake view, and the genuine 17th-century castle atmosphere. For something more contemporary, the Hamilton Suite in the modernised wing has a private balcony over the estate. Avoid the courtyard-facing standard rooms in the newer wing; the whole point of Ashford is the lake.

Día a día
Su itinerario de luna de miel de 7 noches
Arrival and Drawing Room whiskey
Fly into Shannon (1h 45min drive) or Dublin (3h drive). Check-in to your state suite, fire already lit. Welcome cocktail in the Drawing Room, dinner at George V, the castle's grand dining room (jacket required).
Falconry walk and Cong woods
9am hawk walk in the woods with the falconer — your bird flies ahead through 800-year-old oaks and returns to your gauntlet. Lunch in the Dungeon. Afternoon stroll through Cong village (The Quiet Man cottage, the ruined Augustinian abbey).
Lough Corrib by boat
Private boat from the castle's own jetty across Lough Corrib to Inchagoill Island — a 5th-century monastic ruin. Picnic packed by the castle kitchen. Afternoon spa treatment for two in La Mer Couples Suite.
Connemara day trip
Drive 90 min west into Connemara — Kylemore Abbey on the lake, lunch at Ballynahinch Castle, the Sky Road around Clifden, and back along the Twelve Bens. Cigar Terrace at sunset with whiskey.
Spa morning and lake-side dinner
Long morning at the Ashford Spa (Thermal Suite, sauna, the indoor pool below the stone). Afternoon in the Drawing Room. Private dinner served lakeside in the gazebo (book at reservation).
Cliffs of Moher day
2.5h drive south to the Cliffs of Moher; better still, take the Doolin boat to see them from below. Lunch at Gus O'Connor's in Doolin. Return through the Burren limestone landscape.
Slow morning and departure
Final breakfast in the conservatory, last walk on the estate, transfer to Shannon. Most couples extend with two nights at Adare Manor before flying home.
Evaluación honesta
Lo que debe saber antes de reservar
Ashford is not adults-only — families with older children stay too, particularly in school holidays. The vibe stays adult but if you imagine a Relais & Châteaux all-couples scene, that's not Ashford.
The original castle suites have the romance; the newer wing rooms (Mountbatten Wing) are more contemporary but lose much of the atmosphere. Pay up for the castle proper.
Weather is genuinely Irish — even July averages 17°C and rain three days in five. Pack waterproofs; this is not a sunbathing hotel.

Subject: Honeymoon inquiry — Ashford Castle Dear Ashford Castle reservations team, We are planning our honeymoon for [DATES] and would love to stay 4 to 6 nights at the castle. Could you please send best-available rates for a State Suite in the original castle (Stanford White, Lord Ardilaun, or John Lennon if available), and any honeymoon package details? A few questions: 1. Do you offer a honeymoon turndown (champagne, in-suite romantic dinner, spa credit)? 2. Can we book the 1h hawk walk for the first morning? 3. Is a private boat on Lough Corrib arrangeable to Inchagoill Island? 4. Can you arrange chauffeur transfer from Shannon Airport? Thank you, [Your names]

FAQ
Preguntas frecuentes
Good for honeymooners?
Ashford is one of the top three honeymoon hotels in Europe, period. Red Carnation operates it with quiet precision; the castle-suite experience, falconry, lake access, and estate setting deliver the most cinematic honeymoon Ireland offers.
Best time to visit?
May, June, and September are ideal — long days, lowest rain probability, full estate access. July–August is peak but crowded on day-trip activities. December is magical for a Christmas-castle honeymoon, with carolers, fires, and a tree in the Great Hall.
Book in advance?
State suites for May–September must be booked 9–12 months ahead. Email reservations directly (not just the booking site) — Ashford holds back a few suites for direct-booked honeymoon enquiries with a personalised offering.
Adults-only?
No. Children are welcome but the property is large enough that families do not impose on couples. The newer wing accepts kids; the original castle is naturally adult-skewing.
Best room type?
A State Suite in the original castle (Stanford White, Lord Ardilaun, John Lennon). For maximum drama with budget, the Deluxe Castle Lake View. Skip rooms in the Mountbatten Wing — they're nice but lose the castle magic.
How to get there?
Shannon Airport (SNN) is 1h 45min by road and the better choice for first-time arrivals — direct flights from Boston, JFK, Newark, Chicago, London. Knock Airport (NOC) is closer (1h) but has fewer flights. Ashford arranges chauffeur transfers from both, ~$300 from Shannon.
