El veredicto

¿Vale la pena para su luna de miel?

Casa de Campo is the Dominican Republic's grande dame — a 7,000-acre private resort community in La Romana, on the south coast 90 minutes west of Punta Cana, that has been the country's prestige address since 1974. The scale is unique in the Caribbean: three Pete Dye golf courses (Teeth of the Dog is consistently ranked among the world's top 50 and the best in the Caribbean), a marina with 350 yacht slips, an equestrian center, a shooting range, a 245-acre nature preserve along the Chavón River, and the 16th-century-replica artist village of Altos de Chavón on a cliff above the river. Honeymoon couples come for two specific things Casa de Campo does better than anywhere else in the DR: the private villa experience (over 1,800 standalone villas with private pools, gardens, and golf cart transport, many with private chef and butler), and the cultural depth of Altos de Chavón — a fully functioning artist colony with the 5,000-seat Greek amphitheater (Sinatra inaugurated it in 1982; Elton John, Sting, and Andrea Bocelli have all played there), gallery row, and the best restaurant in the resort, La Piazzetta. The downside is honest: the main hotel rooms feel dated, the property is sprawling and requires the golf cart that every booking includes, and the all-around vibe is country-club-on-Caribbean rather than boutique-romance. For honeymoon couples who play golf, want privacy in a villa, and value cultural depth, no other DR property compares.

Recomendación de habitación

Qué habitación reservar

Selección del experto
desde el rango $500–$4,500/noche

Skip the main hotel rooms — book a Garden Villa minimum for the Casa de Campo experience. A 2-bedroom Classic Villa includes a private pool, golf cart, daily housekeeping, and butler service for $1,200-2,000/night high season — extraordinary value for a private house at this level. For full splurge, the Vista Mar Villas (cliffside, ocean view) or the Marina Villas (water-front, walk to restaurants) deliver the romantic configuration. The most legendary address is Casa Kandela or one of the Chavón River cliff villas with infinity pools overlooking the river canyon — these book a year ahead.

Día a día

Su itinerario de luna de miel de 7 noches

1

Arrival at La Romana

Fly into La Romana International (LRM) — direct flights from New York and Miami land you 10 minutes from the resort gates. Alternatively PUJ with a 90-minute transfer. Welcome cocktail at the villa as the butler unpacks and sets out the first-night canapés. Dinner at La Casita on the marina.

2

Minitas Beach & spa

Morning at Minitas Beach (Casa de Campo's private beach with butler service, beach beds, and a beach club restaurant). Lunch at the Beach Club by Le Cirque. Afternoon at the spa for the signature couples cacao ritual using local Dominican cocoa. Dinner at La Piazzetta in Altos de Chavón — wood-fired Italian on the cliff above the river.

3

Teeth of the Dog or river cruise

Golfers: morning round at Teeth of the Dog (seven ocean holes, the Caribbean's #1 course). Non-golfers: private Chavón River cruise — a 90-minute boat trip up the river canyon through the nature preserve, with a stop at the Apocalypse Now film locations (Coppola shot here in 1979). Lunch on the river. Evening sunset cocktails at Altos de Chavón's plaza.

4

Catalina Island catamaran

Private catamaran from the Casa de Campo marina to Catalina Island (25 minutes by sea) — a protected marine sanctuary with one of the best wall-dives and snorkels in the Caribbean. Lunch on the beach, snorkel the inner reef, return by 5pm for spa hour at the villa pool.

5

Altos de Chavón cultural day

Full morning exploring Altos de Chavón — the artist studios where you can buy directly from working artists, the regional Museum of Archaeology (one of the best pre-Columbian collections in the Caribbean), the 16th-century church St. Stanislaus where many honeymoon couples ask for a private blessing. Lunch at La Piazzetta again. Late afternoon back to the villa pool. Private candlelit dinner arranged in the villa garden — the resort sets up a single table by your pool with the butler serving a multi-course menu.

6

Saona Island day trip

Pre-arranged catamaran day to Saona Island (the famous Caribbean sandbar national park, 90 minutes by boat) — starfish in waist-deep water, lunch on the beach, swim back in turquoise lagoons. Return for a final dinner at La Casita on the marina.

7

Final morning and departure

Last breakfast on the villa terrace, a final hour at Minitas Beach, golf-cart transfer to LRM (or 90 minutes to PUJ for international connections). Casa de Campo's villa-and-Chavón combination is the most distinctively Dominican honeymoon in the country.

Evaluación honesta

Lo que debe saber antes de reservar

!

Main hotel Elite Rooms feel dated — almost every honeymoon couple should upgrade to a Classic Garden Villa minimum for the genuine Casa de Campo experience.

!

The property is genuinely vast (7,000 acres) — the included golf cart is the only practical way to move between villa, beach, restaurants, and Altos de Chavón. Plan for a learning curve in the first 24 hours.

!

Service can feel country-club rather than boutique — formal, capable, but not the European-butler intimacy of Eden Roc. Couples wanting boutique intimacy may prefer Eden Roc or Tortuga Bay instead.

FAQ

Preguntas frecuentes

Good for honeymooners?

Casa de Campo is honeymoon-excellent specifically if you book a private villa and embrace the Altos de Chavón cultural anchor. The golf-villa-marina-equestrian package is unique in the DR and unmatched in scale anywhere in the Caribbean. Skip the main hotel rooms — they undersell the property.

Best time to visit?

December through April is the dry-season peak — sunny, calm seas, ideal weather. February-March are the photographic peak. May and November are excellent shoulder months with much better rates and weather still good. Avoid August-October for hurricane risk.

Book in advance?

Premium Marina Villas and Vista Mar Villas book 4-6 months ahead for high season. Specific named villas (Casa Kandela, riverfront houses) book a year ahead. The 'Discover Romance' honeymoon package (sparkling welcome, in-villa dinner, spa credit, golf round) is a real value-add and should be requested at booking.

Adults-only?

Casa de Campo is family-welcome with extensive kids facilities (Flamingo Pool, kids club, equestrian academy). For honeymoon privacy, book a villa away from the main pool cluster — the Chavón River villas and the marina-front villas have very quiet atmospheres. For strictly adults-only, look at Excellence Punta Cana.

Best room type?

Classic Garden Villa minimum — 2-bedroom private house with pool, golf cart, butler. For splurge, a Vista Mar (ocean cliff) or Marina-front villa. Avoid the main hotel rooms; they feel like a 1990s country club. The villa is where Casa de Campo lives up to its reputation.

How to get there?

La Romana International (LRM) is 10 minutes from the resort with direct flights from JFK, Newark, Miami, Toronto, and seasonal European charters. Punta Cana (PUJ) is 90 minutes east with broader flight availability. Casa de Campo arranges private transfers from either airport.
