Day by Day
Your 7-night honeymoon itinerary
Arrival on the Northland Coast
Fly from Auckland to Kerikeri (35 minutes) or drive 3.5 hours north on State Highway 1. Transfer to Kauri Cliffs through the rolling Northland farmland and arrive at one of New Zealand's most beautifully positioned lodges — 22 cottages in a landscape of steep cliffs and three private beaches below. Pre-dinner drinks at the clifftop, then dinner using Northland produce in the Lodge's dining room.
Three Private Beaches
Kauri Cliffs has three private beaches — all exclusive to lodge guests. Matauri Bay to the north (where the Rainbow Warrior was sunk) is visible from the clifftop; Kauri Bay is the main lodge beach with excellent swimming; and Tunnel Beach is the most secluded. Spend the morning exploring all three on the clifftop walking track, then settle at Kauri Bay for the afternoon.
Golf on the Pacific Cliffs
The Kauri Cliffs championship golf course is rated one of the top 100 courses in the world — 15 holes with views of the Pacific, six holes on the clifftop edge, and a fairway landscape as dramatic as any in golf. The course is in excellent condition year-round; caddies are available. For non-golfers, a guided mountain bike ride through the lodge's 6,000-acre farm is an excellent alternative.
Bay of Islands Day Trip
The Bay of Islands is 45 minutes from Kauri Cliffs — a half-day sailing excursion or dolphin snorkeling trip from Paihia makes an excellent day away from the lodge. Russell, New Zealand's oldest European town, is worth an hour for its historic buildings and the Duke of Marlborough Hotel's waterfront bar.
Waipoua Kauri Forest
The Waipoua Forest, an hour's drive south, protects the last significant stands of ancient kauri trees including Tane Mahuta — the largest living kauri on Earth, estimated at 1200+ years old. A guided night tour with a Maori guide who interprets the spiritual significance of these ancient trees is one of New Zealand's most moving natural experiences.
Spa Day & Private Dinner
The Kauri Cliffs spa uses New Zealand native plant extracts in its treatments — kawakawa, manuka, and totara among them. Book a couples spa morning, spend the afternoon on your private cottage terrace with the Pacific glittering below, and request a private dinner set on the clifftop at sunset — one of the lodge's most memorable offerings.
Final Clifftop Walk
Walk the full length of the lodge's clifftop track one last time — three km of Pacific coast views above the private beaches. A final breakfast in the lodge dining room before transfer to Kerikeri Airport or the drive back to Auckland.
Honest Assessment
What to know before you book
Getting to Kauri Cliffs requires either a 3.5-hour drive from Auckland or a 35-minute domestic flight to Kerikeri — the Northland is genuinely remote. This remoteness is central to the experience.
The Northland coast can have variable weather — summer (December–March) is most reliable for beach days, but rain can arrive on any day of the year. The lodge is beautiful in any weather.
Golf is central to Kauri Cliffs' reputation — couples should know that non-golfers will need to engage with other activities (beaches, walking, spa, farm tours) as the golf course is the centrepiece.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is Kauri Cliffs good for honeymooners?
Excellent — particularly for couples who want a combination of beach access, dramatic coastal scenery, and a world-class golf course (even if only one partner golfs). The three private beaches, exceptional service, and outstanding Northland produce in the kitchen create a complete honeymoon experience.
What is the best time to visit?
November through April for the best beach weather and golf conditions. December and January are peak summer — long evenings, warm swimming water, and maximum activity options. The Northland is New Zealand's warmest region year-round.
How far in advance should you book?
Book 4–6 months ahead for peak summer. Kauri Cliffs has 22 suites — more availability than some smaller lodges but still fills quickly for December–February and Easter.
Is Kauri Cliffs adults-only?
No, families are welcome. The natural environment — working farm, cliff walks, beach access — means children can enjoy the property, though the dining and accommodation are adult-oriented.
What is the best room type?
The Kauri Cliffs Suite for the most generous space and complete cottage comfort with Pacific views. Premier Suites are excellent for couples who want the finest room views without the full suite footprint.
How do you get to Kauri Cliffs?
Fly from Auckland (AKL) to Kerikeri (KKE) — 35 minutes. Transfer to Kauri Cliffs takes about 25 minutes. Alternatively, drive 3.5 hours north from Auckland through the Northland. The lodge arranges all transfers and a house vehicle is available during your stay.
