Hotel Esencia is the cult-favorite — a 40-suite private estate on the Xpu-Ha beach between Playa del Carmen and Tulum, on what is consensus the finest sand on the Riviera Maya. It was the private estate of an Italian duchess before becoming a hotel in 2000, and the eccentric, art-filled, hyper-personal atmosphere has been preserved through every renovation. The owners genuinely live on-site. There is no resort feel — you stay in one of 40 suites and villas dispersed across 50 acres of jungle dropping to the beach, each with a butler. The food at Mistura (rated one of Latin America's 50 best by World's 50 Best Restaurants for several years running) is the most serious cooking on the Yucatán coast. The Itzam Mayan Spa is a private cenote in the jungle, used for couples' rituals. Xpu-Ha beach is the only stretch of the Riviera Maya consistently free of sargassum due to the natural cove geometry and Esencia's permanent barriers. Caveats: the price is among the highest on the coast. The eccentric private-estate atmosphere is not for everyone — service is warm but slightly informal. There are no shops, no buzz, no scene; this is genuinely retreat.
