Why Here for Your Honeymoon

Egypt is the honeymoon that condenses 5,000 years of civilisation, the Sahara, the Nile, and a Red Sea reef into ten days. You wake in a Victorian palace at Aswan above lateen-sailed feluccas, sleep on a 27-cabin Oberoi cruiser that drifts past Karnak and Edfu by night, ride camels at sunset to a Pyramid-view dinner at the Mena House, and end at an all-suite Oberoi resort on the Red Sea where coral reefs start ten metres from your private courtyard. The luxury infrastructure — Sofitel Legend Old Cataract, Marriott Mena House, Four Seasons Cairo, the Oberoi Zahra — is the strongest in North Africa. Time the visit October to April and Egypt is the rare honeymoon that delivers history, romance, beach, and adventure in a single, deeply soulful trip.

Is This Right for You?

Egypt for Honeymooners

Perfect for you if…

  • 1Couples obsessed with history, archaeology, or Indiana Jones romance
  • 2Honeymooners who want a moving Nile cruise rather than a fixed beach
  • 3Travellers who can pair Cairo + Aswan + Red Sea in one trip
  • 4Photographers — every site is a postcard, every sunset a film frame
  • 5Couples who want short-haul (Europe) value luxury at $400–$1,200/night

Skip it if…

  • 1You are travelling June–August — interior Egypt hits 40°C+ and Luxor becomes brutal
  • 2You want a pure beach honeymoon — Sharm and Hurghada are good, not Maldives
  • 3You are uncomfortable with persistent baksheesh culture and visible tourism security
  • 4You need overwater villas — Egypt is sand, stone, and water but not bungalows-on-stilts

What to Do

Top 5 Romantic Experiences in Egypt

🛕
01

Pyramids of Giza by Dawn or Candlelight

Stay at Marriott Mena House — 600m from the Pyramids — and request a Pyramid View room. Walk the plateau at 8am as the gates open and you have Khufu effectively to yourselves. Better still: a private candlelit dinner on the hotel lawn with the Great Pyramid lit behind your table is the most photographed honeymoon dinner in Egypt.

💡 Insider tip

Book the camel ride from the back (south) entrance to avoid touts at the main gate. Sunrise is colder than you think — bring a wrap.

Pyramids ticket $25/couple; private dinner $300–$600 for two
🛥️
02

Oberoi Zahra Nile Cruise — Aswan to Luxor

The Oberoi Zahra is the most luxurious 27-cabin floating boutique on the Nile. Seven nights, all-inclusive, an Egyptologist guide on board, and stops at Edfu, Kom Ombo, Esna, Karnak, and the Valley of the Kings. Drinking Champagne on the sundeck as the river bends past green palms and ancient temples is the defining honeymoon image of Egypt.

💡 Insider tip

Book the Luxury Suite with a wraparound balcony on Deck 4. Aswan-to-Luxor (downstream) is more relaxed than the reverse.

From $1,200 per couple per night, all-inclusive with guided excursions
🌅
03

Sunset Felucca on the Nile at Aswan

From Sofitel Legend Old Cataract's 1902 terrace, the concierge arranges a private felucca with mint tea and meze for two at golden hour. You drift past Kitchener's Island and the Aga Khan Mausoleum as the sun sinks behind the West Bank dunes. Two hours, around $80, the most romantic 120 minutes in Egypt.

💡 Insider tip

Sail before 5pm in winter, 6pm in summer. The captain expects 100 EGP tip on top of the price.

Private felucca $80–$150 for two with refreshments
🤿
04

Red Sea Reef Snorkel at Sharm or Hurghada

Egypt's Red Sea reefs are among the world's top dive sites. From Four Seasons Sharm El Sheikh you have a house reef directly off the property; from the Oberoi Sahl Hasheesh you can snorkel coral 10 metres from your private courtyard. Ras Mohammed marine park (south of Sharm) is the famous full-day excursion.

💡 Insider tip

Book the dive in the early morning — wind picks up by midday. Bring a rashguard; coral burn is very real.

House reef snorkel free for guests; full-day Ras Mohammed boat trip $90–$130/person
🌌
05

White Desert Stargazing Excursion

A two-night extension into the Bahariya Oasis and the surreal chalk-rock formations of the White Desert is the ultimate honeymoon detour. Camp under a Milky Way sky bright enough to read by, eat fire-pit lamb with Bedouin hosts, and wake among rock formations shaped like mushrooms and ice cream cones.

💡 Insider tip

Add this between Cairo and the cruise; it is operationally complex but utterly unforgettable.

Private 2-night White Desert tour $1,200–$2,000 per couple, full-board

Where to Stay

Areas of Egypt for Honeymooners

Cairo & Giza

Pyramids, Egyptian Museum, Khan El Khalili, urban energy

A 22-million-person megacity. Stay at Mena House (Pyramid-side) for the icon shot or Four Seasons Nile Plaza/Sofitel Gezirah for Nile-view luxury. 2–3 nights minimum.

Luxor

Karnak, Valley of the Kings, hot-air ballooning

The richest concentration of pharaonic temples in Egypt. Most honeymooners experience Luxor from a Nile cruise rather than overnighting in town. Sunrise balloon over the West Bank is unmissable.

Aswan

Old Cataract terrace, Philae, Abu Simbel, Nubian villages

Egypt's most romantic city — slower, gentler, the Nile narrows here and the granite islands give it a Garden-of-Eden feel. 2–3 nights at Sofitel Old Cataract is the honeymoon highlight.

Red Sea (Sharm El Sheikh / Hurghada)

Beach, coral reef, decompression after the history

Sinai's Sharm has the most dramatic underwater landscape (Ras Mohammed). Hurghada is mainland-side, calmer, with the standout Oberoi Sahl Hasheesh. 3–4 nights as the trip closer.

White Desert / Bahariya

Stargazing, off-grid camping, Sahara romance

A 4h drive from Cairo into surreal chalk-rock formations. 1–2 nights camping under stars with a private guide.

Expert Advice

Insider Tips for Your Egypt Honeymoon

01

Book a private Egyptologist guide for Karnak and Valley of the Kings

Without one you will see stones; with one you will see stories. Audio Egypt and Memphis Tours offer English-speaking guides at $100–$180 per day. Even on a cruise (which provides one), a half-day private guide at the Sphinx is a different experience.

02

Get an e-visa before flying — do not rely on visa-on-arrival

Egypt offers a 30-day e-visa for $25 via visa2egypt.gov.eg. Issued in 7 days. Brings you straight through immigration. Visa-on-arrival queues at Cairo airport can be 90+ minutes.

03

Tip baksheesh in small Egyptian pound notes, generously

EGP 20–50 per service is standard (porter, taxi, restroom attendant, monument photo). Withdraw EGP 2,000 cash at Cairo airport ATM on arrival; you will use it daily. Tip-bills don't need to be crisp.

04

Book Pyramid sound-and-light for the second-night experience

After dinner at Mena House, the Pyramids and Sphinx light show (40 minutes, in English on Sundays/Wednesdays/Fridays) is corny but romantic. Book a hotel-arranged car so you skip the entry queues.

05

Use Cairo as your hub — fly internally rather than driving

EgyptAir runs frequent Cairo-Aswan-Luxor flights at $80–$150 one-way. The Cairo-Aswan train is romantic in theory but takes 13 hours. Skip it for honeymoons.

What to Pack

Packing List for Egypt

1
Modest layers (knees + shoulders)
Egypt is Muslim-majority — respectful dress at mosques, monuments, and outside resorts is expected. Light long-sleeve linen shirts and a pashmina cover everything.
2
Sturdy closed shoes for Karnak/Valley of the Kings
You will walk 6–10 km on uneven sandstone in a single morning. Sandals are insufficient.
3
High-SPF sunscreen and broad-brim hat
No shade at the Pyramids, no shade in Luxor, no shade in the desert. SPF 50+ mandatory plus aloe after-sun.
4
Reef-safe sunscreen and rashguard for the Red Sea
Hurghada/Sharm reefs are protected. Coral burn is a real risk on snorkel; rashguards prevent it.
5
Light fleece for desert nights and over-air-conditioned cruisers
Sahara nights drop to 8°C in winter and Nile cruisers run their AC at 18°C. A merino fleece is the most-used item in your bag.

Food & Drink

What You'll Eat in Egypt

Mezze (foul medames, baba ghanoush, tahini, falafel — yes, the Egyptian version is the original), molokhia (jute-leaf stew with rabbit or chicken), koshari (national dish: rice, lentils, chickpeas, pasta, fried onion, tomato sauce — the best 50-cent meal in the world), grilled pigeon stuffed with rice, fresh-baked aysh baladi (Egyptian pita), Umm Ali (national dessert: bread pudding with milk, nuts, raisins), basbousa (semolina cake with rosewater syrup), Stella beer, and karkadé (cold hibiscus tea, the romantic drink of Aswan terraces). Top dining: 9 Pyramids Lounge (Pyramid-view), Khan El Khalili (Mena House), Sequoia (Cairo waterfront), Sachi (Cairo).

Practical Guide

Getting to Egypt

✈️

Getting There

Fly to Cairo (CAI) with EgyptAir, BA, Lufthansa, KLM, Emirates, Air France direct from Europe (4–5h) or via Doha/Dubai/Istanbul from North America. Internal flights via EgyptAir to Aswan (ASW), Luxor (LXR), Sharm (SSH), or Hurghada (HRG) — book through to luggage as one ticket if connecting. Private transfer from Cairo airport ($25–$40) saves the taxi negotiation.

📍

Where to Stay

Classic 10-night honeymoon: 3 nights Cairo (Marriott Mena House or Four Seasons Nile Plaza) → 7-night Oberoi Zahra Aswan-to-Luxor cruise → 3 nights Red Sea (Oberoi Sahl Hasheesh or Four Seasons Sharm). Shorter 7-night version: 2 Cairo + 4 Nile cruise + 1 fly home from Luxor. Add a 2-night White Desert excursion between Cairo and the cruise for the wilderness extension.

📅

When to Go

October–April is the only sensible window. November and March are sweet spots — warm enough for Red Sea, cool enough for Pyramids by midday. Avoid Ramadan if you want full restaurant service in non-resort areas (variable date — check yearly).
