Lake como
Italy's most photographed lake — gilded grand-dame villas, vintage Riva boats, Bellagio sunsets.
Why Here for Your Honeymoon
Lake Como is the European honeymoon for couples who want classical Italian glamour without the crowds of Capri or Positano. The lake is shaped like an upside-down Y, ringed by 19th-century villas now converted into the most romantic hotels in Italy — Villa d'Este (since 1873), Grand Hotel Tremezzo, Passalacqua (World #1 in 2023), Mandarin Oriental, Il Sereno. The honeymoon rhythm: morning swim in a lake-front infinity pool, lunch at a fishing-village osteria across the water by vintage Riva, afternoon nap, sunset aperitivo, three-hour Italian dinner. Repeat for seven days.

What to Do
Top 5 Romantic Experiences in Lake como
Vintage Riva Aquarama lake tour
A private mahogany Riva Aquarama or Tritone speedboat, hired for half a day from Bellagio, Como, or directly from your hotel's dock. Captain takes you across to Villa Balbianello (the James Bond villa), Bellagio, Tremezzo, and Cernobbio.
Book through your hotel — they have the trusted operators. Book the Aquarama specifically (the larger Tritone has less of the iconic profile). Pack a champagne hamper.
Villa Carlotta + Villa Balbianello gardens
Two of the great Italian botanical gardens — Carlotta (Tremezzo) for camellias and Balbianello (Lenno) for terraced romanticism on a peninsula. Balbianello featured in Star Wars Episode II and Casino Royale.
Visit Balbianello Tuesday–Sunday only (closed Monday). The 1km uphill walk from the boat dock is steep — rent the small electric shuttle if needed.
Bellagio aperitivo + Punta Spartivento sunset
Take the ferry or private boat to Bellagio, walk the cobbled streets, aperitivo at La Punta or Bar Rossi as the sun drops over the Y of the lake from the spit at the village's northernmost point.
Avoid Bellagio between 11am and 3pm in July–August (cruise tourists). Late afternoon and evening are when locals come out.
Helicopter to Milan for Opera at La Scala
A 25-min helicopter from your hotel's lawn to Milan Linate, dinner at Cracco or Antica Trattoria della Pesa, opera at La Scala, helicopter back. The most decadent honeymoon evening Italy can offer.
Book opera tickets at least 2 months ahead via the La Scala website. Hotel concierges (Tremezzo, Mandarin) handle the helicopter charter.
Sentiero del Viandante hike
The "Wayfarer's Path" along the eastern shore — 45km in total but day-walkable in 5km sections. Lierna to Varenna is the classic 4h leg with constant lake views and a Varenna lunch reward.
Take the train from Como to Lierna in the morning, walk to Varenna, lunch at Il Cavatappi, ferry back to your hotel's dock. Wear trail shoes — sections are stony.

Expert Advice
Insider Tips for Your Lake como Honeymoon
Book your hotel's private boat for at least one half-day
Public ferries are cheap and frequent but the half-day private mahogany Riva is the trip-defining experience. Tremezzo, Mandarin, and Il Sereno all maintain vintage Riva fleets for guests.
Eat lunch in fishing villages, dinner at the hotel
The hotel restaurants are Michelin-class but expensive. Lunch in Varenna (Il Cavatappi), Bellagio (La Punta), Lenno (Sant'Anna) — €60–€100 per couple, fresh perch and risotto, local wine.
Avoid Bellagio mid-day in summer
Cruise-ship day-trippers fill Bellagio between 11am and 3pm in July–August. Visit in late afternoon or early morning. The same goes for Villa Balbianello.
Hire a driver from Milan, not a rental car
A private driver from Milan to your Lake Como hotel ($300 each way) saves you Italian motorway parking and lake-shore traffic stress. Worth every euro.
Visit the "Bellagio of the western shore" — Argegno and Lenno
The under-touristed western-shore villages of Argegno and Lenno are 70% as scenic as Bellagio with 20% of the crowds. Half-day side trips by ferry.
