Why Here for Your Honeymoon

Mauritius is where French elegance, Indian warmth, and Creole soul converge on an island ringed by some of the world's most perfect coral lagoons. Unlike the Maldives — a resort bubble isolated from any real culture — Mauritius gives you both: overwater-quality turquoise water AND spice markets, rum distilleries, UNESCO mountains, and a food scene that fuses four cuisines into something extraordinary. The east coast's Belle Mare corridor has the clearest, flattest lagoon in the Indian Ocean. The southwest's Le Morne has the drama. Combined with African safari connections, Mauritius sits at the top of the Indian Ocean honeymoon hierarchy.

What to Do

Top 5 Romantic Experiences in Mauritius

🐬
01

Wild Dolphin Swim at Tamarin Bay

Spinner dolphin pods gather in Tamarin Bay every morning before heading offshore to feed. Small local boats take you out to swim alongside them in open water — completely wild, completely unscripted. One of the most moving wildlife encounters available from any Indian Ocean hotel.

💡 Insider tip

Book directly with Captain Blacky's boats or similar small Tamarin operators — not through your hotel. Hotels charge €150–€200 for the same experience. Depart at 7am for the highest dolphin density.

$50–$80 per person
🚁
02

Underwater Waterfall Helicopter Flight

A sand and silt flow off the Le Morne Brabant shelf creates the optical illusion of an underwater waterfall visible only from above. The aerial view over Le Morne peninsula with the lagoon on both sides and the illusion below is one of the great natural spectacles of the Indian Ocean.

💡 Insider tip

ULM microlight flights are cheaper and fly lower — better for the visual effect. Book through your hotel for the safest, best-positioned operators.

€150–€250 per person
🏄
03

Kitesurfing at Le Morne

The Le Morne lagoon on the island's southwestern tip is the kitesurf capital of the Indian Ocean — consistent trade winds, flat warm water, and a UNESCO mountain as backdrop. Even complete beginners can get airborne in two days with the schools at the Kite Lagoon.

💡 Insider tip

June–September has the strongest and most consistent winds. The IKO-certified schools at Le Morne are among the most professional in the world.

€80–€120 per lesson
🌿
04

Bois Chéri Tea Plantation Tour

Mauritius produces excellent single-estate teas from its highland plantations. The Bois Chéri factory in the south offers guided tours through the tea-making process followed by tasting on a hilltop terrace with views across the southern coast.

💡 Insider tip

Combine with the Rhumerie de Chamarel rum distillery nearby — both are in the southern highlands and make a perfect full-day excursion.

€15–€25 per person
🤿
05

Blue Bay Marine Park Diving

The Blue Bay Marine Park in the southeast has some of the most protected coral in the Indian Ocean — branching staghorns, massive brain corals, and visibility that regularly exceeds 25m. The Stella Maris wreck at 18m is encrusted with soft coral and ringed by turtles and barracuda.

💡 Insider tip

Dive Attitude at Mahébourg is the best operator. Blue Bay is on the southeast coast — best accessed from Le Touessrok, Heritage Awali, or Heritage Le Telfair.

€60–€100 per person (2 dives)

Where to Stay

Areas of Mauritius for Honeymooners

East Coast (Belle Mare / Trou d'Eau Douce)

Finest lagoon, best resort concentration

The flattest, clearest water in Mauritius — protected from trade winds by the eastern reef. Four Seasons, One&Only Le Saint Géran, and Constance Prince Maurice are all on this 15km stretch. The obvious first choice for beach-focused honeymooners.

North (Grand Baie)

Restaurants, day trips, liveliest scene

The most developed area with the best restaurant variety, boutiques, and easy access to flat-water snorkeling islets (Ile Aux Cerfs, Gunner's Quoin). Less secluded than the east but better for couples who want activity variety.

South (Le Morne / Bel Ombre)

Dramatic scenery, kitesurfing, UNESCO heritage

The UNESCO-listed Le Morne Brabant mountain creates the island's most dramatic backdrop. Strong trade winds make this the Indian Ocean's kitesurf capital. Lux Le Morne and Heritage hotels are here. Extraordinary aerial views over both sides of the peninsula.

West (Flic en Flac)

Sunset beach, diving, local life

The west coast catches the best sunsets and has the most accessible reef diving. Less prestigious resort strip than the east but authentic Mauritian towns, local restaurants, and prices that undercut the Belle Mare corridor.

Expert Advice

Insider Tips for Your Mauritius Honeymoon

01

East coast for the best lagoon, southwest for the most dramatic scenery

The east coast (Belle Mare corridor) has calmer, clearer water and the finest resort concentration. The southwest (Le Morne) has more dramatic mountain scenery and the best kitesurf conditions. Decide which matters more before booking.

02

Rent a car for at least one day — the island rewards exploration

Mauritius is small enough to cross in 90 minutes. The Chamarel highlands (rum distillery, Seven Coloured Earth, tea plantation), the Port Louis Central Market, and the Black River Gorges National Park are all within reach of any hotel.

03

Port Louis Central Market is worth the trip

The main market in the capital is one of the best in the Indian Ocean — spices, street food, fresh fish, and Mauritian textiles. Go on a Saturday morning and eat dholl puri from the stalls outside. Combine with a wander through the Caudan Waterfront.

04

Book the dolphin swim directly with local operators

Hotels charge €150–€200 per couple for the Tamarin Bay dolphin swim. Captain Blacky and local operators in Tamarin charge $50–$80 per couple for an identical (often better) experience. The dolphins are wild — no operator can guarantee them, regardless of price.

05

Mauritius eats like no other Indian Ocean island

The Indian-Creole-Chinese-French fusion means every meal is a discovery. Eat at local Creole tables d'hôte at least twice, try dholl puri from a roadside stall, and drink Chamarel rum agricole — it's better than most Caribbean equivalents.

What to Pack

Packing List for Mauritius

1
Reef-safe sunscreen
Blue Bay Marine Park and other protected areas restrict chemical sunscreens — bring mineral SPF
2
Light hiking shoes
Le Morne Brabant summit hike and Black River Gorges trails require proper footwear — sandals won't work
3
Windproof layer
Trade winds at Le Morne and evening ocean breezes on the east coast are cooler than expected, especially June–August
4
Underwater camera
Blue Bay coral gardens and the Stella Maris wreck justify proper underwater photography — the visibility is exceptional
5
Cash in Mauritian Rupees
Local restaurants, dholl puri stalls, markets, and bus travel require cash. Hotels take cards but the real Mauritius experience requires rupees.

Food & Drink

What You'll Eat in Mauritius

Dholl puri (split pea flatbread with curry) from roadside stalls, rougaille (Creole tomato-based fish or sausage stew), octopus curry with turmeric and ginger, alouda (rose milk with basil seeds), and fresh gateaux piment (chilli cakes) with a Star beer at a beach shack in Grand Baie. The fusion of Indian, Creole, Chinese and French cuisines makes Mauritian food uniquely extraordinary.

Practical Guide

Getting to Mauritius

✈️

Getting There

Fly to Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU) on the southeast coast. Direct flights from London Heathrow (British Airways, Air Mauritius, ~11-12h), Paris CDG (Air Mauritius, ~11h), Frankfurt, Zurich, and Amsterdam. From MRU, the east coast is 30–45 minutes, the north is 45 minutes, the southwest Le Morne area is 1 hour. All hotels arrange private transfers.

📍

Where to Stay

East coast (Belle Mare corridor) for the best lagoon and finest resorts — the most popular honeymoon choice. Southwest (Le Morne) for dramatic mountain scenery and kitesurfing. North (Grand Baie) for the liveliest scene with restaurant variety. West (Flic en Flac) for sunsets, diving, and better value.

📅

When to Go

May–December is the dry season — the safe window. October and November are the absolute sweet spot: warm, dry, excellent visibility, before cyclone season, and lower than peak January prices. Avoid January–March unless you have comprehensive cyclone-cancellation insurance.
