Le verdict

Cela vaut-il le coup pour votre voyage de noces ?

Château de Pray is the genuine value play of the Loire — a 13th-century stone château perched above the Loire river just east of Amboise, with twin Renaissance towers, a stone-walled park, an excellent restaurant (one Michelin star until 2019, still serving at that level), and 19 rooms split between the original castle, a 1880 pavilion, and a converted farm building in the garden. The property is family-run (the Bidoyets, third generation), unfussy, and the kind of small character-hotel that the major Relais & Châteaux properties have priced themselves out of being. Where Hauts de Loire and Artigny aim at international honeymoon couples with international honeymoon budgets, Pray quietly delivers a genuine Loire château stay at €280-450 per night — a third of the Relais price for a property that is, in many ways, more architecturally authentic (the original 13th-century castle walls and the Renaissance towers are intact; the dining room is in the original armoury). The trade-off is real: the rooms in the converted farm pavilion are functional rather than spectacular, the spa is small, and the swimming pool is in a 1970s annex. For honeymoon couples whose Loire vision is the stay-in-a-real-castle authenticity rather than five-star polish — and especially for couples on a real honeymoon budget — Pray is the smartest address in the Amboise area. Walk to the Clos Lucé in 25 minutes, drive to Chenonceau in 20 minutes, eat at one of the most under-rated Michelin-tier restaurants in central France.

    Quelle chambre réserver

    Sélection d'expert
à partir de la fourchette $280–$900/nuit

Rooms 1-5 in the original 13th-century castle (Catégorie Château) are the canonical Pray rooms — stone walls, original window embrasures, and the genuine castle feel. The Suite Renaissance has the Renaissance-tower view. Avoid the Pavillon rooms (built 1880, fine but not the castle experience) and especially the Manoir rooms in the converted farm — these are the value tier but lose the castle entirely.

    Évaluation honnête

Ce qu'il faut savoir avant de réserver

    !

The Pray rooms vary enormously — Catégorie Château rooms in the original 13th-century castle are spectacular, the converted farm Manoir rooms are functional. Specify Château category at booking and confirm in writing.

    !

The spa is small and minimal — a single treatment room and a sauna. For real spa days, drive to Hauts de Loire (30 minutes) for the day spa.

    !

Pray is on the Amboise side of the river — the 25-minute walk into town is along a busy road for part of the route. Drive into town for evenings.

    FAQ

    Questions fréquentes

    Good for honeymooners?

Pray is the romantic-authenticity Loire honeymoon — the original 13th-century castle, the family-run hospitality, the excellent restaurant. Best for couples whose priority is the genuine castle stay at sensible price rather than full Relais & Châteaux polish.

    Best time to visit?

May through September. May and June for the park and the Loire light, September for the harvest and quieter châteaux. The property is closed January-February.

    Book in advance?

2-4 months ahead for the Château category rooms. Direct booking via the hotel — the family-run management is helpful with honeymoon arrangements.

    Adults-only?

No — Pray accepts families but the property scale and the focus on the restaurant means the guest mix is overwhelmingly couples.

    Best room type?

Catégorie Château in the original castle (rooms 1-5). Suite Renaissance for the tower view. Avoid the Manoir converted-farm rooms.

    How to get there?

TGV from Paris Montparnasse to Tours St-Pierre-des-Corps (1h), then 30-minute drive east to Amboise. Rent a car at the station — essential for the châteaux.
