Le verdict

Cela vaut-il le coup pour votre voyage de noces ?

Jao is the most romantic safari bedroom in Botswana — full stop. Wilderness's northern-Delta flagship sits on a private island surrounded by permanent water, with five ultra-luxury suites and two private villas tucked into a gallery forest of fig and jackalberry trees. The 2019 rebuild by legendary safari architects Silvio Rech and Lesley Carstens is a near-masterpiece: Afro-retro pod-shaped suites with sliding glass walls, sunken living rooms, private plunge pools, salas, outdoor copper baths, and suites large enough to feel like private pavilions. The camp layers in an art gallery, a photographic studio, a serious spa with steam and sauna, a yoga deck and a wine cellar. The game viewing is water-forward and dreamlike — mokoro channels, floodplain drives, and a genuinely intimate feel with so few guests. For a honeymoon, there is no better Botswana address.

The five standard suites are exceptional and honestly all the honeymoon room you will ever need. If budget is no object, the Jao Villas are two-bedroom private villas with dedicated chef, guide and vehicle — the ultimate splurge for a newly-married couple wanting the place entirely to themselves. Either way, request a suite on the western side of the island for the best sunset exposure.

Évaluation honnête

Ce qu'il faut savoir avant de réserver

!

Jao is reached by light aircraft from Maun followed by a short boat transfer — 20 kg soft-sided duffel limit per guest, no hard cases, and transfers depend on weather and water levels.

!

Jao is a water-forward camp — May to September is peak flood and ideal for mokoro and boat activities, while October to April is drier, with game viewing concentrating around permanent water and some channels receding.

!

This is a malaria region — consult your travel doctor about prophylaxis and bring DEET, long sleeves for dusk, and be prepared for normal bush-camp insect life.

Subject: Honeymoon booking enquiry — Jao Camp, 7 nights

Hello Wilderness Reservations team,

We are planning our honeymoon and would like to spend seven nights at Jao Camp. Our tentative dates are [DATES], travelling as two adults. Please confirm availability for a standard suite and, as an option, current pricing for one of the Jao Villas on an exclusive-use basis. We'd also appreciate the current fully inclusive per-night rates and Maun flight timings including the boat transfer.

We would like your recommendations for pairing Jao with a complementary Wilderness camp — Mombo, DumaTau or Vumbura Plains — for a 10-14 night itinerary, plus any honeymoon additions (spa packages, private dinners, star beds). Your current deposit and cancellation policy would be appreciated.

Thank you — we look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards,

FAQ

Questions fréquentes

Is Jao worth the premium over other Wilderness camps?

For a honeymoon, yes. The suites are among the largest and most architecturally ambitious on the continent, the spa is unusually serious for a bush camp, and the setting — a private water-surrounded island with only seven guest units including villas — is uniquely romantic.

Is the game viewing as strong as at Mombo?

Not quite — Mombo is unmatched for predator density, while Jao's strength is the water-based experience and the boat-accessible Hunda Island for land drives. Many honeymooners combine Jao with Mombo or a drier camp for the best of both worlds.

How active is the water year-round?

The core channels around Jao are permanent, so mokoro and boat activities operate all year. The high-flood season from May to September is the most dramatic; October to April is lower water but brings spectacular skies and excellent photography.

Are children allowed?

Jao accepts children from six years old, with the family-friendly Jao Villas being the natural option for families. The main camp retains a quiet, couples-led feel and dinner tables skew adult.

What is the spa like?

The Jao Spa is a standalone wellness pavilion with a menu of massages, facials and body treatments using African botanical products, plus a steam room, sauna and yoga deck — genuinely a serious spa, unusual for a safari camp.

How long should we stay?

A minimum of four nights is ideal — three feels rushed given the transfer complexity. Four to five nights allows for a full mix of boat, mokoro, drives and wellness without feeling programmed.
