Land at Bandaranaike Airport and be collected in a hotel car in minutes — the 7-minute transfer through the night-blooming tropical garden to the lit colonial manor is itself a decompression ritual. A welcome cocktail of arrack and lime is served on the deep verandah as the garden's night jasmine opens. Dinner in the open dining room uses Sri Lankan herbs from the kitchen garden — the pol roti and black pork curry are outstanding.
Colombo City & Pettah Market
Spend the morning in Colombo: the Dutch-era Wolvendaal Church, the National Museum, and the extraordinary sensory overload of Pettah bazaar — spice streets, fabric lanes, and the covered market where every ingredient of Sri Lankan cuisine is sold in vast quantities. The Wallawwa is most valuable as a first and last night property — it does not have the beach, wildlife, or dramatic scenery of the south coast or east coast resorts. As a standalone week-long honeymoon base it would feel limited; as bookend nights, it is near-perfect.
With only 16 rooms, The Wallawwa can be fully booked by corporate or group travel even outside high season — book ahead, especially for long-weekend dates when Colombo business travel peaks.
The hotel is near the airport which means aircraft noise is audible at certain times of day, though not intrusive at night. Rooms further into the garden are quieter.
