Le verdict

Cela vaut-il le coup pour votre voyage de noces ?

Pemba Island in Tanzania's Mozambique Channel is one of the Indian Ocean's last truly undeveloped island paradises — no mass tourism, pristine coral reefs, and an off-grid romance that Zanzibar lost decades ago. Zawawi Retreat is an intimate boutique eco-lodge that pairs this extraordinary setting with elegant villas, world-class diving on some of the healthiest coral walls in the Indian Ocean, and dhow sailing at sunset. This is for honeymooners who want genuine discovery alongside luxury.

Idéal pour les couples qui…

The beachfront villas are directly on the white sand with the emerald Mozambique Channel outside the door — the most romantic positioning on the island. Each villa is constructed using traditional Swahili coast methods: makuti thatch, carved Zanzibari doors, and local coral rag stone, furnishing the spaces with handmade coconut-wood furniture and hand-blocked Pemba Island textiles. The outdoor rain showers beneath the palm canopy are a particular delight on Pemba's warm evenings.

Jour par jour

Itinéraire de 7 nuits pour votre voyage de noces

1

Arrival & First Dhow Sail

Fly from Zanzibar to Pemba Island (approximately 40 minutes) and transfer to the retreat by road through clove forests and small fishing villages — a journey that feels like stepping back to a simpler Indian Ocean. Afternoon dhow sailing in the channel introduces you to the island from the water, with the Mozambique Channel glittering to the horizon.

2

World-Class Diving

Pemba's diving is consistently rated among the best in the Indian Ocean — near-vertical coral walls descending hundreds of metres into the channel, with hammerhead sharks, manta rays, and prolific reef life. Your dive guide from the retreat leads a morning two-tank dive on the western wall before a Swahili seafood lunch.

3

Snorkelling & Clove Village Walk

A shallow reef snorkel in the morning — Pemba's fringing reefs are accessible from the beach, rich with parrotfish, octopus, and enormous moray eels. The afternoon takes you into a clove-farming village for a guided walk — Pemba produces most of Tanzania's cloves and the scented forests are extraordinary.

4

Dhow Fishing & Beach Day

Join the retreat's resident fisherman on a traditional ngalawa outrigger for a morning's fishing in the channel — hand-line fishing in a manner unchanged for centuries, with the catch served as grilled fish and coconut rice for lunch. The afternoon is pure beach time: hammock, book, and the rhythm of the Indian Ocean.

5

Spa Day & Sunset Dhow

A full spa day using locally sourced Pemba botanicals — ylang ylang, clove, and coconut in a custom couple's treatment. The evening calls for a sunset dhow excursion with the retreat's captain, traditional Arabic lateen sail catching the channel breeze as the sun dissolves into the Mozambique Channel.

6

Misali Island Marine Reserve

Charter a boat to Misali Island — a tiny uninhabited island 15km from Pemba surrounded by a pristine marine reserve. Snorkel over untouched coral gardens, picnic on a deserted beach, and return to Zawawi as the afternoon light turns the channel golden. This is the Indian Ocean as it was before mass tourism arrived.

7

Final Dive & Swahili Farewell

Last morning dive on Pemba's famous Shimba Hills underwater wall before a farewell Swahili lunch of biryani, samosas, and fresh tropical fruit on the beach. Transfer to the airstrip for the flight back to Zanzibar, carrying the memory of an island that the world has barely discovered.

Évaluation honnête

Ce qu'il faut savoir avant de réserver

!

Pemba is remote — the journey from Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar involves additional flights or ferry connections; allow extra travel time.

!

Diving experience is beneficial to fully appreciate Pemba; non-divers can learn here but should note the island's primary appeal is its marine environment.

!

Power outages and limited connectivity are part of the off-grid experience; embrace the digital detox rather than expecting urban connectivity.

FAQ

Questions fréquentes

Good for honeymooners?

Zawawi Retreat on Pemba Island is a superb honeymoon choice for adventurous couples who want genuine undiscovered Indian Ocean romance rather than the busy Zanzibar tourist trail. The diving, dhow sailing, and pristine reef environment create a deeply intimate experience in a setting that feels like a private discovery.

Best time to visit?

June through October and January through March are Pemba's two dry seasons — the best times to dive and to enjoy calm seas for dhow sailing. The long rains of April-May and short rains of November can make travel more challenging and visibility offshore variable. Peak diving season is June to September.

Book in advance?

Zawawi is a boutique property that books out for peak season months. Reserve 3 to 6 months ahead for June-October dry season dates. Diving equipment and instructor time should be confirmed at booking, especially for beginners wanting a learn-to-dive experience.

Adults-only?

Zawawi is not formally adults-only, but the remote island location and dive-focused ethos attract overwhelmingly adult couples. The retreat's intimate scale ensures a peaceful, romantic atmosphere.

Best room type?

The beachfront villas are the first choice for honeymooners — direct beach access, ocean views from the bed, and the outdoor shower beneath the palm canopy. These book out earliest. Garden villas are also lovely and provide more shade and privacy from the sea breeze.

How to get there?

Fly from Zanzibar (ZNZ) to Pemba Island (PMA) on Coastal Aviation or Air Tanzania — approximately 40 minutes. Alternatively, a high-speed ferry from Zanzibar takes 3-4 hours. From Dar es Salaam, direct flights to Pemba operate on some days. The retreat coordinates transfers from the Pemba airstrip.
