The Verdict

Worth it for your honeymoon?

Bastion Luxury Hotel is the rarest thing in Cartagena: an explicitly adults-only luxury boutique in the heart of the walled Centro Histórico. The 51-key property occupies a restored colonial mansion on Calle del Sargento Mayor (the same quiet street as Tcherassi), and Bastion's adults-only positioning means the entire property atmosphere — pool deck, restaurant, spa, courtyard — is calibrated for couples. This is the single biggest differentiator in the Cartagena boutique market: every other property allows children, and while children are rare at the top end, they are not non-existent. At Bastion they are simply not there. The architecture is classic restored-colonial — three-story courtyard, exposed beams, original tile floors — but the design is more contemporary than Casa San Agustin or Tcherassi, with cleaner lines, more neutral palettes, and a rooftop pool deck that functions like a small adult resort. The Sukha Spa is genuinely excellent, the restaurant Alma de Bastion serves a thoughtful Colombian-Caribbean menu, and the concierge team is among the most polished in the city. Honeymoon couples who specifically want the adults-only guarantee, who value contemporary-luxe over heritage-colonial styling, and who appreciate the larger-than-boutique scale (51 keys means availability is easier) should book Bastion ahead of any other property.

Room Recommendation

Which room to book

Expert Pick
from $400–$1,400/night range

The Master Suite is the honeymoon target — a top-floor 600-square-foot suite with a king bed, exposed colonial beams, a freestanding tub, a separate living area, and a private terrace overlooking the Old Town rooftops. For a step down in price with most of the experience, the Junior Suite is the value pick — same suite styling at a smaller footprint without the private terrace.

Honest Assessment

What to know before you book

!

Bastion is adults-only — couples with children should choose Sofitel Santa Clara or Casa San Agustin instead. (Most honeymooners find this a feature, not a bug.)

!

The contemporary-restored colonial styling is less dramatic than the convent-heritage feel of Sofitel Santa Clara or the design-led intensity of Tcherassi. Couples who want Instagram-iconic interiors should compare images closely.

!

Alma de Bastion is good but not destination-level the way Carmen or Celele are. Couples should plan to eat out for most dinners — Cartagena has the restaurants.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Good for honeymooners?

Yes — the adults-only positioning, rooftop pool, Sukha Spa, and Old Town address are exactly what honeymoon couples want. The guest mix is 78 percent couples and honeymooners according to the hotel's own data, the highest in the city.

Best time to visit?

January through March for peak weather. December and April also excellent. Bastion runs shoulder-season rates in May, June, October, and November that cut prices by 25 to 35 percent.

Book in advance?

Master Suite books 5 to 7 months ahead for peak season. Junior Suites and Deluxe rooms have more flexibility. The honeymoon package (rooftop dinner, spa credit, sparkling wine, late check-out) is best requested at booking.

Adults-only?

Yes — Bastion is one of only a handful of explicitly adults-only luxury hotels in Cartagena, and the only one of that group in the heart of the walled city.

Best room type?

Master Suite for the top-floor terrace experience. Junior Suite for the value pick. Avoid entry-level Bastion Rooms only if you can stretch — they are still good but lack the suite character.

How to get there?

CTG airport is 15 minutes from the Old Town. Hotel arranges private transfers ($35-50). Bastion sits on Calle del Sargento Mayor, just off Plaza San Diego.
