The Verdict
Worth it for your honeymoon?
The Belmond Hotel Cipriani sits at the tip of Giudecca, the long thin island facing San Marco across the canal, and has been the Venetian honeymoon hotel of international choice since 1958, when Giuseppe Cipriani (founder of Harry’s Bar, inventor of the Bellini and the carpaccio) opened it as a private retreat for the kind of guests he wanted to invite home from Harry’s. Ninety-six rooms across the original main building, two adjoining historic palazzi (the Palazzo Vendramin and the Palazzetto), and three acres of gardens — by Venetian standards, an estate. The defining feature, beyond any other hotel in the city, is the saltwater Olympic-length swimming pool sunk into the gardens behind the hotel: the only true pool in Venice. There is a tennis court (also the only one in Venice). There are bicycles. There is a private vegetable garden that supplies the restaurants. The hotel’s own teak motoscafo runs every fifteen minutes to its private jetty at San Marco — a four-minute crossing, with the result that you sleep on a quiet residential island with gardens and a pool, and arrive at dinner in San Marco as though by helicopter. The food operation is serious: Oro is the Michelin-starred fine dining restaurant under chef Massimiliano Alajmo; Cip’s Club is the sunset-aperitivo terrace facing directly across the canal at the Doge’s Palace; and breakfast in the gardens is one of Venice’s great rituals. The honeymoon move is the Palladio Suite in the original building (private rooftop terrace, lagoon view) or a Junior Suite with a pool-and-garden view. The defining moment: sunset on the Cip’s Club terrace, with the entire San Marco waterfront lighting up across the water, a Bellini in your hand, and your motoscafo idling on the canal waiting to take you across to dinner. Caveats: the hotel is large by Venice standards — it is not the Aman’s 24-room intimacy; in summer the pool deck can feel busy; and Giudecca is not where most first-time Venice visitors expect to stay. But for honeymooners who want a pool, gardens, and the most spectacular sunset view in the city, the Cipriani has no competition.

Room Recommendation
Which room to book
The Palladio Suite in the original building with its private rooftop terrace and unobstructed lagoon view is the honeymoon ne plus ultra. For a smaller budget, a Junior Suite Garden-and-Pool View gives you a terrace overlooking the gardens with peace and quiet. Avoid the standard Lagoon View rooms in the Palazzetto — they’re still lovely but you lose the Cipriani-as-estate feeling.

What to know before you book
Larger than the Aman or Gritti — 96 rooms means more buzz, more bustle.
Pool deck can be busy in peak July–August — book in May, June, September instead.
Giudecca is not central — you depend on the motoscafo to reach San Marco (every 15 min, 4 min).

Frequently asked questions
Good for honeymooners?
Among the top Venice honeymoons — the only Olympic pool in the city, the private motoscafo, the gardens and the Cip’s Club sunset are unmatched.
Best time to visit?
May, June and September are ideal — warm, swimmable pool, manageable crowds. October is the quiet alternative. Closed November to mid-March.
Book in advance?
Palladio Suite and the best Junior Suites book out 9+ months for May–September. Standard rooms 6 months.
Adults-only?
No — the Cipriani is famously family-friendly with an excellent children’s programme. In July–August expect families at the pool. May, June, September are quieter.
Best room type?
Palladio Suite for the rooftop terrace. Junior Suite Garden-and-Pool View for the sweet spot. Lagoon View rooms still lovely if budget tight.
