The Verdict
Worth it for your honeymoon?
Brunton Boatyard is the heritage hotel at the heart of Fort Kochi — built on the site of a 19th-century shipyard, designed in Portuguese-Dutch-British colonial style with broad teak verandas overlooking the harbour and the Chinese fishing nets. It belongs to the CGH Earth group (the same people who run Spice Coast Cruises and Marari Beach Resort), and shares their unmistakable formula: heritage-led architecture, regional food taken seriously, no over-designed wellness gimmicks, and a calm sense that the hotel is part of the town rather than imposed on it. For a Kerala honeymoon it is the ideal arrival hotel — direct harbour-view rooms with antique four-posters and shuttered louver windows, a pool facing the water, two outstanding restaurants (the History serves Kerala-Portuguese fusion, the Armoury Café does casual harbour-front lunches), and a 60-second walk to the spice quarter, the synagogue, and the Kathakali theatre. Pair it with one or two nights at the start of a Kerala trip plus a last-night return on departure. It will never be as plush as the Taj Malabar across the harbour, but it has more soul and more interesting food. Pick Brunton if you care about heritage and atmosphere; pick the Taj if you care about full international-luxury polish.

Room Recommendation
Which room to book
A Sea View room on the harbour side, top floor — wider veranda, better light, the famous sunset over the Chinese nets directly framed. Avoid the courtyard-view rooms; while quieter, they lack the central reason to stay here.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Brunton Boatyard or Taj Malabar?
Brunton has more character and is in Fort Kochi itself — walkable to everything. Taj Malabar has glossier rooms but is on Willingdon Island, requiring the ferry.
Is the History restaurant worth booking ahead?
Yes — book for your first or last night. Their fusion menu (Mappila, Cochin Jewish, Portuguese-Kerala) is the most ambitious in town.
Can we walk to the Chinese fishing nets?
Yes — 2 minutes along the promenade from the hotel entrance.
Does the spa do real Ayurveda?
Yes — a proper CGH Earth Ayurveda menu with consultation. For a serious programme stay at Coconut Lagoon or Marari instead.
Children?
Allowed but rare — the heritage layout doesn\'t suit families. Honeymooners and design travellers dominate.
When is the best time?
November through March. December and January are peak. Avoid May–September monsoon.
