The Verdict

Worth it for your honeymoon?

Casas del XVI is the only honeymoon-grade boutique hotel inside Santo Domingo's Zona Colonial — the UNESCO-listed Spanish colonial old town that is the oldest European-built city in the Americas (founded 1496 by Bartholomew Columbus). The hotel is not a single building but a collection of seven restored 16th-century colonial mansions scattered around the Zona Colonial within a 10-minute walk of each other, each with 3-5 keys (typically 25-30 keys total across the whole portfolio), each with a private courtyard pool, and each operating as a self-contained micro-hotel with shared central concierge. The genius of the model is that you stay in an actual restored colonial Spanish mansion — Casa de los Mapas, Casa del Diseñador, Casa del Pozo, each with its own architectural personality — but get hotel-grade service via the central reception. The Zona Colonial itself is one of the most underrated urban honeymoon settings in the Caribbean: Calle El Conde for the pedestrian shopping promenade, the Cathedral of Santa María (1540, the first cathedral in the Americas), the Alcázar de Colón (Diego Columbus's palace), Plaza España at sunset for cocktails along the colonial waterfront, and dinner at Mesón D'Bari for the Dominican criollo cuisine. This is the DR honeymoon for couples who would book Cartagena or Old Havana — culture-first, beach-secondary. Pair with 2-3 nights at Eden Roc or Tortuga Bay for the beach finale.

    Room Recommendation

    Which room to book

    Expert Pick
    from $400–$1,500/night range

The configuration depends on the casa — each of the seven houses has its character. Casa del Pozo Master Suite (5 keys, the most romantic colonial courtyard) is the entry-point honeymoon move. Casa del Diseñador (5 keys, designed by Patricia Reid Baquero, the most fashion-forward of the houses) is the design-purist choice. For maximum splurge, Casa de los Mapas Master Suite has a private rooftop terrace with views over the Zona Colonial rooftops to the Caribbean — sunset cocktails up there are the property's defining moment. Specify the casa AND the room category at booking; the concierge will explain the personality of each.

    Day by Day

    Your 7-night honeymoon itinerary

    1

    Arrival into the Zona Colonial

Fly into Santo Domingo Las Américas (SDQ) — 35-minute Casas del XVI transfer to the historic center. Check-in at the central reception (Casa del Diseñador), then walk to your assigned casa. Welcome cocktail in the courtyard. First evening at Pat'e Palo (the oldest tavern in the Americas, 1505) on Plaza España for cocktails on the colonial waterfront, then dinner at Mesón D'Bari.

    2

Zona Colonial walking morning, pool afternoon

Morning private walking tour: Cathedral of Santa María (1540), Calle El Conde, Alcázar de Colón, Plaza España, the Tres Ojos colonial walls. Lunch at La Cafetera Colonial on Calle El Conde (Dominican coffee culture). Afternoon at the casa courtyard pool. Dinner at La Atarazana 9 for the catch-of-the-day on Plaza España.

    3

Day trip to Juan Dolio or Boca Chica

Optional day trip to Juan Dolio beach (45 minutes east, the closest decent beach to Santo Domingo) for couples who need a beach interlude inside the city stay. Or, alternatively, a guided tour of the Larimar Museum + a half-day to Tres Ojos National Park (three underground freshwater lagoons inside limestone caves, 20 minutes from the city). Evening at Casas del XVI's rooftop bar at Casa de los Mapas for sunset cocktails.

    4

    Spa day, private dinner

Casas del XVI does not have an in-house spa but the concierge arranges in-room couples massage with local therapists (genuinely excellent quality for half the resort rate). Late afternoon walk through the Plaza de la Cultura (the national museum cluster). Private candlelit dinner in your casa's courtyard — Casas del XVI arranges a single table by your pool with a private chef preparing a multi-course Dominican criollo menu.

    5

    Optional transfer to beach combo

Most honeymoon couples splitting between culture and beach pivot here — pre-arranged transfer (90 minutes) to Casa de Campo in La Romana or 3 hours to Punta Cana for a 2-3 night beach finale at Tortuga Bay or Eden Roc. Couples staying full week in Santo Domingo use this day for the Faro a Colón monument, the Botanical Gardens, and the Mercado Modelo for souvenirs.

    6

    Music, baseball, or rum

Three rotating evening options based on the day's calendar: a baseball game at the Estadio Quisqueya (Dominican Winter League, Oct-Jan, the most fun cultural-immersion activity in the country); a son and merengue night at El Mesón D'Bari with live music; or a Brugal rum tasting (Casas del XVI arranges a private session). Dinner at Buche Perico for the new-Dominican tasting menu.

    7

    Final morning and departure

Final breakfast in the casa courtyard, last walk through Calle El Conde, 35-minute transfer to SDQ. Casas del XVI is the cultural counterweight to a country known for all-inclusive beach — and the rare DR address that competes with Old Havana or Cartagena.

    Honest Assessment

What to know before you book

    !

Casas del XVI is not on the beach — Santo Domingo has very modest beach access (Juan Dolio is 45 minutes east). Couples wanting beach as the headline should pair this with 2-3 nights at Eden Roc or Tortuga Bay rather than a full week here.

    !

Each casa has only 3-5 keys with shared courtyard space — couples wanting private-house privacy should book a Master Suite category or rent a whole casa (some are available as full buy-out, $4,000-7,000/night for the whole house).

    !

The Zona Colonial is the safest neighborhood in Santo Domingo and very walkable, but the rest of Santo Domingo is genuinely urban with traffic and security concerns — stay inside the Zona for the honeymoon. Casas del XVI arranges all transfers.

    FAQ

    Frequently asked questions

    Good for honeymooners?

Casas del XVI is one of the most distinctive honeymoon hotels in the Caribbean — the only chance to stay in an actual restored 16th-century colonial mansion in the oldest European-built city in the Americas. The 3-5-keys-per-casa scale and the central concierge model deliver true boutique intimacy. Best for culture-first couples; pair with a beach property for variety.

    Best time to visit?

December through April is the dry-season peak — sunny, calm, no rain. February-March are the photographic peak. May and November are excellent shoulder value. Santo Domingo is less hurricane-affected than Punta Cana but still avoid August-September for storm risk.

    Book in advance?

With only 25-30 keys across the seven casas, Casas del XVI sells out 3-4 months ahead for high season; specific master suites and the full-casa buyouts book 6+ months ahead. The honeymoon package (welcome champagne, in-courtyard private dinner, in-room couples massage) is included for couples mentioning honeymoon at booking.

    Adults-only?

Casas del XVI welcomes families but the 3-5-keys-per-casa scale, the colonial mansion atmosphere, and the price point skew heavily adult and honeymoon. Children are rare. For full privacy, rent a whole casa as a buy-out.

    Best room type?

Casa del Pozo Master Suite for the most romantic colonial courtyard. Casa del Diseñador for design-forward. Casa de los Mapas Master Suite for the rooftop terrace with sunset views. Specify the casa AND the room category — each casa has its personality.

    How to get there?

Santo Domingo Las Américas (SDQ) is 35 minutes from the Zona Colonial — direct flights from JFK, Miami, Newark, Atlanta, Toronto, Madrid, Paris. Casas del XVI arranges private transfers ($55). Punta Cana (PUJ) is 2.5 hours by road for combo itineraries.
