The Verdict

Worth it for your honeymoon?

Explora Patagonia is the original — the white timber lodge that opened in 1993 at Salto Chico, the waterfall where Lake Nordenskjöld empties into Lake Pehoé, and effectively invented the all-inclusive adventure-lodge model in South America. From its 49 rooms, every window frames the Paine Massif rising across the lake; the location is inside Torres del Paine National Park itself, which means trails depart directly from the lodge doors and the morning light on the granite towers happens before you've finished breakfast. Three decades on, the building is showing some character — wooden floors that creak, slightly compact rooms by 2026 ultra-luxury standards — but Explora's guides, half- and full-day expedition menu, and the sheer drama of the setting at Salto Chico remain unmatched. The new Quincho dining barn and four outdoor cliff-edge hot tubs added in recent renovations bring the experience back to the top of the Torres del Paine luxury list.

Room Recommendation

Which room to book

Expert Pick
from $1,400–$3,800/night range

All 49 rooms face the Paine massif across Lake Pehoé. Splurge for an Exploradores Suite on the upper floor — corner location, fireplace, a wider lake-facing window, and a freestanding bathtub. The standard Cordillera Pehoé rooms are smaller but still have the full view. Avoid the lobby-side wing rooms which face the entry road. The new Quincho hot tubs along the cliff edge are open to all guests but quietest at sunrise.

Day by Day

Your 7-night honeymoon itinerary

1

Arrival at Salto Chico

Fly Punta Arenas (PUQ), join Explora's 4.5-hour transfer through the steppe to the lodge perched above the waterfall. Welcome briefing, room introduction, and the first long dinner of king crab, slow-roasted lamb, and Chilean Carménère wine.

2

Mirador Las Torres Day

Explora's flagship full-day hike — 19 km round trip to the granite towers base lagoon, with the lodge's experienced guides setting a pace matched to your fitness. Return to Salto Chico in time for a sunset cliff-edge hot tub above the waterfall.

3

Grey Glacier Day

Drive west to Pudeto, board the Grey III catamaran across Lake Grey to the calving face of Grey Glacier. Some itineraries add an optional kayak among the icebergs near the glacier's snout — a defining Patagonia honeymoon photograph.

4

Cuernos Horseback Ride

Explora's gauchos lead a half-day ride along the southern shore of Lake Nordenskjöld toward the Cuernos del Paine. Afternoon at the Yamana wellness centre — indoor pool, four hot tubs, sauna, and a couples' massage.

5

French Valley Boat & Hike

Catamaran across Lake Pehoé to Paine Grande, then the famous French Valley trek — 22 km with views of hanging glaciers calving off Paine Grande's western face. The cathedral amphitheatre of granite at the valley's head is the high point of any Torres del Paine week.

6

Pingo Valley & Salto Grande

A quieter full-day walk through the Pingo Valley along Lake Grey's southern shore — quiet condor cliffs, lenga forest, and a chance to slow the rhythm. End at the Salto Grande viewpoint at golden hour, the river crashing between Lakes Nordenskjöld and Pehoé.

7

Final Morning at Salto Chico

Final breakfast above the falls, a quiet walk down to the waterfall viewpoint, and Explora's transfer back south to Punta Arenas for the late-afternoon flight to Santiago.

Honest Assessment

What to know before you book

!

The lodge dates to 1993 and despite ongoing renovations the bones show their age — booking expects a pioneer character lodge, not a 2026 ultra-modern hotel.

!

Inside-the-park location means more day-tripper traffic than Tierra's quieter eastern flank — the main viewpoints can be busy at midday.

!

Excursions are shared in fixed daily group sizes (up to 8); couples wanting fully private guides should consider Awasi at a substantial premium.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is Explora good for honeymooners?

Yes — the setting at Salto Chico is irreplaceable, the all-inclusive format removes friction, and the cliff-edge hot tubs at sunrise and sunset are a defining honeymoon moment. Couples who want the most architecturally fresh property may prefer Tierra; couples who want the location and the legacy choose Explora.

How many nights minimum?

Explora requires a 4-night minimum, with 4 or 5 nights ideal to cover Mirador Las Torres, Grey Glacier, French Valley, and a quieter rest day. Six nights gives margin for inevitable weather days.

When to go?

Open October through April. December–February are the warmest and longest days; March is the most peaceful with golden autumn light. The lodge closes in winter (May–September).

What's included?

All meals, premium Chilean wines and bar, the entire daily expedition menu with guides, the Yamana wellness centre's pool, sauna, and four hot tubs, and round-trip transfers from Punta Arenas. Spa massage treatments and certain optional add-ons (kayak at Grey, extra horseback) are billed separately.

How do we get there?

Fly Santiago (SCL) to Punta Arenas (PUQ), 3.5 hours on LATAM or Sky Airline. Explora's shared shuttle departs Punta Arenas mid-afternoon for the 4.5-hour drive to Salto Chico. Build at least one buffer night in Santiago at each end of the trip.

Explora vs Tierra vs Awasi — which?

Tierra is the newest design and easiest logistics on the park's eastern edge. Explora has the iconic in-park Salto Chico location and the pioneer legacy. Awasi is the most exclusive — a private villa with private guide and 4×4 per couple — at roughly double the price. All three are excellent honeymoon choices.
