The Verdict

Worth it for your honeymoon?

The Grand Hotel Timeo is the cliffside Belmond perched directly beside Taormina's 3rd-century BC Greek Theatre, opened in 1873 as the original Grand Tour hotel of Sicily and re-launched after a top-to-bottom Belmond restoration in 2023. It is the property the White Lotus production designer chose first when scouting Season 2 — and after watching couples cross the lobby, you understand why. The hotel sits 200 metres above the Ionian Sea on the Taormina ridge, every front-facing room frames Mount Etna across the bay, and the famous Literary Terrace where D.H. Lawrence, Truman Capote, and Tennessee Williams all wrote remains the most cinematic cocktail spot in southern Italy. Belmond's 2023 renovation kept the 19th-century bones — terrazzo floors, hand-painted Caltagirone tile, vaulted ceilings — and added Dolce & Gabbana-designed Casa Dolce suites, an infinity pool carved into the cliff, and the new Otto Geleng Michelin-starred restaurant. There is no other property in Italy with this combination of ancient archaeological context (the Greek Theatre is literally next door), volcanic backdrop, and Belmond-grade service. For honeymooners who want Sicily's most photographed view and a hotel that has been romanticising couples for 150 years, Timeo is the answer — though the village location means no beach on-site (a complimentary shuttle runs to sister property Villa Sant'Andrea on the cove).

Room Recommendation

Which room to book

Expert Pick
from $950–$5,500/night range

The Etna View Junior Suites are the essential booking — every front-facing room frames the volcano across the Bay of Naxos with the Greek Theatre cypress trees in the foreground. Upgrade if budget permits to a Casa Dolce suite (the Dolce & Gabbana-designed wing) for the extended terrace and the stuffed Caltagirone tilework. Suite 314 is the writer's pick: corner aspect, double Etna exposure, freestanding tub at the window.

Day by Day

Your 7-night honeymoon itinerary

1

Arrival & Literary Terrace Sunset

Land Catania (CTA) — 50 minutes south by private transfer along the Ionian coast. Settle into your Etna View suite, then aperitivo on the Literary Terrace where Capote drank Negronis. Dinner at Otto Geleng (Michelin-starred, named for the German painter who first popularised Taormina) — the tasting menu opens with red prawns from Mazara del Vallo and closes with cannoli and Marsala. Early bed; jet lag here is gentle but the volcano sunrise is worth being awake for.

2

Mount Etna Excursion

Private 4WD up the south flank of Etna at 8am — a 90-minute ascent through lava fields, oak forests, and finally to 2,900m where the active craters smoke against black volcanic sand. A volcanologist guide explains the 2021 paroxysmal eruptions. Lunch at a Pietradolce winery on the volcano's slopes (Etna's mineral-driven Nerello Mascalese is one of Europe's great red wines). Return for golden hour at the hotel pool with a view of the volcano you just climbed.

3

Taormina Village & Greek Theatre

Walk Corso Umberto, the pedestrian spine of medieval Taormina — boutique gelato at Bam Bar, granita di mandorla (almond) for elevenses, the 14th-century Palazzo Corvaja, and the Piazza IX Aprile balcony for the postcard panorama. Mid-afternoon entry to the Greek Theatre next door (the hotel keeps a private gate) — the 3rd-century BC amphitheatre is one of the most spectacular ruins in Italy because Etna sits perfectly framed in the proscenium opening. Evening at La Capinera (Michelin-starred, beachside in Spisone) or in-room dining on your terrace.

4

Beach Day at Villa Sant'Andrea

The complimentary Belmond shuttle drops you at sister property Villa Sant'Andrea on Mazzarò Cove, 200 metres below the cliff. Day-bed reservation at the private beach club (Timeo guests have access), kayak hire to Isola Bella nature reserve (the islet on a tombolo of pebble), lunch at the seafront grill — fresh swordfish carpaccio, pasta alla Norma, an entire branzino baked in salt. Cable car back up to Taormina for the late afternoon.

5

Spa Morning, Syracuse Afternoon

Morning at the Bamford Haybarn Spa (Belmond's signature wellness brand) for a couples' Sicilian volcanic stone massage. After lunch, optional driver day trip 90 minutes south to Syracuse and Ortigia — the limestone islet that was the largest city of the ancient Greek world. Walk Piazza Duomo (a baroque cathedral built around the columns of a 5th-century BC temple of Athena), aperitivo at Il Sale, dinner at Don Camillo. Driver returns you to Taormina by 11pm.

6

Aeolian Boat Day from Milazzo

Driver to Milazzo (90 min north) and a private gozzo speedboat to the Aeolian archipelago — circumnavigate Panarea (the chic boutique island), swim in the Cala Junco cove, lunch at Hotel Raya's terrace, then around active Stromboli volcano for the famous 'Sciara del Fuoco' sunset eruption viewing from the sea. Glasses of Malvasia delle Lipari (the volcanic dessert wine) on the way back. A long full day — book the driver from 8am to 9pm.

7

Greek Theatre Sunrise & Departure

Optional 5:30am wake-up — the hotel's private gate opens before public hours, and watching dawn break over Etna with the empty Greek Theatre in the foreground is the defining Taormina memory. Last breakfast on the terrace, final granita di limone at Bam Bar, then the 50-minute transfer to Catania for departure. Most couples leave promising to return for an Etna harvest in October.

Honest Assessment

What to know before you book

!

There is no beach on-site — Timeo sits 200m up on the cliff. The shuttle to Villa Sant'Andrea on Mazzarò Cove runs every 30 minutes but adds friction for couples wanting toes-in-sand mornings.

!

Taormina is a tourist village and Corso Umberto can feel busy mid-July to mid-August; book May, June, or September for the same weather without the cruise-ship day-trippers.

!

The Belmond renovation is brand new (2023) but some bathroom layouts in the historic wing remain compact — if a large bathtub matters, request a Casa Dolce category specifically.

!

Otto Geleng (the in-house Michelin restaurant) is exceptional but small — book 6 weeks ahead, especially for the terrace tables with Etna view.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Good for honeymooners?

Outstanding. Timeo is one of the few Italian hotels designed end-to-end for couples — the front-facing Etna view rooms, the Literary Terrace cocktail ritual, the cliff-edge infinity pool, and the proximity to the Greek Theatre create a sequence of romantic set-pieces that rivals any honeymoon hotel in Europe.

Best time to visit?

May, June, and September are ideal — 25–28°C, sea swimmable, no crowds. October is increasingly popular for Etna grape harvest. July–August is peak heat (32°C+) with the most visitors. Belmond closes November–March.

Book in advance?

Etna View Junior Suites for May, June, and September fill 3–4 months ahead. Casa Dolce suites and corner units (314, 414) need 5–6 months for high season. The hotel re-opens late March each year — early-season bookings often offer included airport transfers.

Adults-only?

No, Timeo welcomes families, but the cliff-side layout, the focus on fine dining, and the village setting (versus a beach resort) self-select for couples. Honeymooners and 50+ travellers dominate the guest mix outside school holidays.

Best room type?

Etna View Junior Suite is the entry-level honeymoon room — every one frames the volcano. Casa Dolce wing (Dolce & Gabbana-designed) is the upgrade pick for larger terraces and brighter D&G tile palettes. Avoid Garden View categories — beautiful, but you came for the volcano.

How to get there?

Catania (CTA) is the closest airport — 50 minutes south by private transfer (the hotel arranges Mercedes V-class for €180 each way). Palermo (PMO) is 3 hours west and only relevant if you're combining with western Sicily. Italian rail connects Catania to Taormina-Giardini station in 50 minutes if you prefer train.
