The Verdict

Worth it for your honeymoon?

La Mala is the boutique honeymoon address in Cinque Terre — a four-room adults-only guesthouse perched on the cliffside above Vernazza's medieval harbour, reached by 60 stone steps up from the piazza and rewarded with what is unanimously rated the best view in the five villages: the technicolor houses cascading down to the famous harbour, the Doria castle on the headland, and the open Ligurian Sea beyond. Vernazza is widely considered the most photogenic of the five villages — the harbour with the bobbing wooden gozzi, the Romanesque Santa Margherita church directly on the water, the absence of a road (cars stop in a parking lot above the village; everything else is on foot). La Mala is owned by Giamba and Eros, two Vernazza brothers whose family has lived in the village for generations, and the four rooms occupy a former family home with original stone walls, beamed ceilings, and seaward terraces designed for one specific moment: golden hour over Vernazza harbour with a Cinque Terre DOC white and a basket of focaccia. There is no pool, no spa, no restaurant beyond a continental breakfast hamper delivered to the room — La Mala is a four-room boutique, not a hotel in any conventional sense, and the price reflects scarcity rather than amenities. For couples for whom the Cinque Terre dream is the village, the harbour, and the romance of living briefly inside a postcard rather than the hotel facilities, La Mala is the canonical honeymoon stay. It books 12 months ahead and the very best room (the terrace suite) books closer to 18.

Room Recommendation

Which room to book

Expert Pick
from $380–$750/night range

The Camera con Terrazza (terrace suite) is the singular honeymoon room — the only room with a private outdoor terrace large enough for a small table and two loungers, positioned to capture the full Vernazza harbour panorama with the Doria castle on the headland. King bed, original stone walls, beamed ceiling, freestanding bathtub. $650-750 per night in shoulder, $850+ in peak. The three other rooms (all sea view) are excellent but lack the private terrace and have small French balconies only. There is no second-best honeymoon room here — it's the terrace suite or wait until next year.

Day by Day

Your 7-night honeymoon itinerary

1

Arrival in Vernazza

Train to Vernazza (the train stops in a tunnel; you exit directly into the village). Giamba meets at the station and carries luggage up the 60 steps (this is part of the La Mala service — guests do not carry their own bags). Settle in on the terrace, sunset Aperol with the harbour view, dinner at Belforte (the medieval tower restaurant 30 seconds away) or Gambero Rosso on the piazza.

2

Vernazza in Depth

Morning swim in the harbour from the small beach beside the church. Espresso at Il Pirata dei Cinque Terre with the Sicilian Cannoli brothers. Late morning hike up to the Doria Castle (10 minutes) for the postcard photo. Lunch at Belforte. Afternoon at the harbour, aperitivo on the terrace, dinner at Trattoria Gianni Franzi on the piazza.

3

Sentiero Azzurro to Monterosso

The 90-minute trail north from Vernazza to Monterosso — the second-most spectacular Blue Trail section. Lunch on Monterosso's Fegina beach at L'Ancora della Tortuga. Afternoon return by train (4 minutes) and harbour swim at Vernazza. Sciacchetrà and focaccia on the La Mala terrace for sunset.

4

Corniglia & Manarola

Train to Corniglia (5 minutes south), the hilltop village reached by the 33-flight staircase. Lunch at Osteria a Cantina de Mananan with the unmatched anchovy crudi. Continue to Manarola (10 minutes) for blue-hour photos from Punta Bonfiglio. Dinner at Trattoria dal Billy and train back to Vernazza.

5

Riomaggiore & Boat Day

Train to Riomaggiore for the morning, lunch at A Pie' de Ma over the sea. Afternoon private boat charter back along the coast — Cinque Terre seen from the water with all five villages stacked on cliffs above the wake. Sunset return to Vernazza harbour, dinner at Belforte one more time.

6

Sciacchetrà & Pesto Day

Visit to Cheo or Possa, the two remaining artisan Sciacchetrà producers, for a vineyard tour and tasting (by appointment, $50-80 per couple). Pesto-making class in Manarola — Cinque Terre and Liguria are the birthplace of pesto, made with Genovese basil, Ligurian olive oil, Sardinian pecorino, pine nuts, and garlic. Late afternoon swim in Vernazza harbour, final long aperitivo on the terrace.

7

Last Coffee & Departure

Breakfast hamper on the terrace one last time. Espresso at Il Pirata. Giamba carries the bags down the 60 steps to the station. The view from the La Mala terrace is the one image of Cinque Terre most honeymooners carry home — and the most-printed wedding photo of every couple that has stayed here.

Honest Assessment

What to know before you book

!

Four rooms only — La Mala books 12-18 months ahead for peak season; the terrace suite books even further out. Plan early.

!

60 steep stone steps up from the village to the property — the luggage service is included but the daily climb is part of life here. Not suitable for mobility issues.

!

No pool, no spa, no restaurant beyond a continental breakfast hamper — this is a boutique guesthouse not a hotel. All meals are out in the village.

!

Closed late November through Easter. May-October is the canonical season.

Dear Giamba & Eros,

We are planning our honeymoon [DATE]-[DATE] and are interested in the Camera con Terrazza (or a sea-view room if the terrace suite is unavailable). Please advise on availability, honeymoon packages, Sciacchetrà tasting arrangements, and luggage service from the station.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Good for honeymooners?

La Mala is arguably the single best honeymoon address in Cinque Terre — the four-room scale, the adults-only policy, the unmatched Vernazza harbour view, and the genuine local ownership create a romantic immersion no larger hotel can match. The trade-off is the 60-step climb and the lack of amenities; couples who prioritize comfort over view should choose Porto Roca.

Best time to visit?

May-June and September-October. La Mala closes November-March.

Book in advance?

12 months ahead minimum, 18 months for the terrace suite in May, June, or September. Direct booking gets the welcome bottle of Sciacchetrà and breakfast hamper upgrade.

Adults-only?

Yes — La Mala is explicitly adults-only and honeymoon couples are the dominant guest profile. The four-room scale means absolute privacy.

Best room type?

The Camera con Terrazza (terrace suite) — the only room with a private outdoor terrace and the full Vernazza harbour panorama. The three other sea-view rooms are excellent but have small French balconies only.

How to get there?

Train to Vernazza station (the station is inside the village). Giamba or Eros meets the train and carries luggage up the 60 steps to the property. Pisa (PSA) is the closest airport (1.5h by train via La Spezia).
