Hôtel & Spa Le Germain Charlevoix

The Verdict

Worth it for your honeymoon?

Hôtel & Spa Le Germain Charlevoix is the boutique alternative to the Manoir Richelieu — a contemporary 145-room resort built on a working farm in Baie-Saint-Paul, 90 minutes northeast of Quebec City, opened in 2012 by the Germain family (Quebec’s most respected hotel group, behind Le Germain Montreal and the Alt brand). The site is a 60-hectare farm with grazing sheep, a vegetable garden, a working cooperative cheese-making operation on-site (La Laiterie Charlevoix supplies many of the cheeses served at dinner), and access to the Charlevoix Train (the scenic train from Quebec City to La Malbaie that runs through the property’s land). Architecture is modern Quebec farmhouse — barn-board cladding, exposed steel, big windows facing the river and the Massif mountain. The honeymoon proposition is the contrast with the Manoir Richelieu: where the Manoir is castle-grand, Le Germain is rustic-luxe; where the Manoir is large and conference-friendly, Le Germain is intimate and farm-table-focused. Le Bercail restaurant is the dining centre (Quebec farmhouse cuisine, ingredients from the on-site farm and Charlevoix producers); the spa is small but well-equipped with outdoor thermal pools facing the fields and the Massif mountain. The hotel runs the Charlevoix Express train service to and from Quebec City — couples can arrive by train, scenic 3h ride directly to the hotel’s own platform. The honeymoon move is one of the Loft Suites with private terrace and farm view, 3 nights pre- or post-Manoir Richelieu, with a Massif ski day in winter or a farmers’ market morning in summer. Caveats: not for couples who want full-scale luxury with concierge depth (Le Germain is intentionally informal); the village of Baie-Saint-Paul is excellent for galleries and food but small; and winter is far better than summer here for the snow-on-farm aesthetic.

Room Recommendation

Which room to book

Expert Pick
from $350–$1,100/night range

A Loft Suite with private terrace, farm view, and freestanding bath is the honeymoon room. For a smaller budget, any of the Studio rooms gives you the contemporary design and farm view. Skip the standard rooms without view.

Honest Assessment

What to know before you book

!

Informal Quebec luxury — not for couples expecting full concierge and Relais-style service. The point is the farm, the design, and the food, not the polish.

!

Charlevoix Express train runs only Jun–Oct — drive in winter (1h 30min from Quebec City).

!

Baie-Saint-Paul village is small — two evenings is enough for the gallery scene; pair with the Manoir Richelieu or Tadoussac to lengthen the regional stay.

Subject: Honeymoon inquiry — Le Germain Charlevoix

Dear Le Germain Charlevoix reservations,

We’d like 3 to 4 nights for our honeymoon [DATES] in a Loft Suite with terrace and farm view.

Questions:
1. Honeymoon arrival turndown (champagne, dessert)?
2. Le Bercail tasting menu reservation on the first evening?
3. Spa couples’ treatment with thermal pool access?
4. Charlevoix Express train booking (if Jun–Oct)?
5. Massif ski-day arrangements (winter)?

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Good for honeymooners?

Yes — particularly for couples who want contemporary Quebec design over castle grandeur. The farm setting, on-site cheese-making, and Massif access are the honeymoon trifecta.

Best time to visit?

Late September to mid-October for foliage; June–August for warm weather and farm activity; December–March for snow and Le Massif skiing.

Book in advance?

Loft Suites for peak months: 4–6 months ahead. Standard rooms: 2–3 months.

Adults-only?

No. The hotel is family-friendly but the farm scale keeps families minimal outside school holidays.

Best room type?

Loft Suite with private terrace and farm view. For smaller budget, a Studio with farm view. Skip standard rooms.

How to get there?

Quebec City (YQB) is 1h 30min by car. Charlevoix Express train from Quebec City runs Jun–Oct — scenic 3h. Hotel will collect from the train’s on-site platform.
