The Verdict
Worth it for your honeymoon?
Southern Ocean Lodge reopened in December 2023 after the 2020 bushfires destroyed the original — rebuilt by Baillie Lodges with the same architect (Max Pritchard) to an even more cinematic standard. 25 suites, 5-star all-inclusive, perched on a clifftop above the Southern Ocean. Kangaroo Island wildlife (sea lions at Seal Bay, koalas, wallabies, echidnas in the wild). The single most atmospheric coastal lodge in Australia.

Room Recommendation
Which room to book
All 25 suites face the Southern Ocean. The Remarkable Suites and Ocean Retreats are the largest — private outdoor decks with daybeds, sunken lounges, ocean views from the bath. The Osprey Pavilion (the master, 1 unit) is the celebration room. Flinders Suites are the value-luxury entry but still ocean-facing.

Honest Assessment
What to know before you book
Reopened December 2023 — book early as 25 suites only and global demand is at peak.
Kangaroo Island is remote — getting there is a 30-min flight + 1h drive from Adelaide; helicopter charters available.
All-inclusive but premium experiences (Lashmars Lagoon helicopter, sailboat charter) are extras.
Cliff position is spectacular but very exposed — Southern Ocean storms are dramatic.
Hotel doesn't have a swimming pool (the Southern Ocean is too rough to swim — beaches inland are calmer).
