The Verdict

Worth it for your honeymoon?

The Chedi is the best-designed luxury hotel in the Swiss Alps — full stop. Jean-Michel Gathy's pan-Asian chalet vision drops a Balinese sensibility into the Gotthard massif, and the result is 123 suites and residences that feel like a private, fire-lit retreat. The 2,400 m² spa is the heart of the hotel: a 35-metre indoor pool that continues under glass into the outdoor hot pool, Asian-style hammams, and treatment suites for couples that are the best in Switzerland. Dining is unusually strong — four restaurants in the hotel, a central cheese tower, a genuine Japanese restaurant with a robata grill, and Deck 47 watch boutique for a between-courses browse. Andermatt itself is the newer ski alternative to St. Moritz: quieter village, bigger combined ski area (SkiArena Andermatt+Sedrun, 180 km), and easier train access. For a couple who want modern design over old-world pomp, The Chedi is the clear best honeymoon pick in the Alps.

Room Recommendation

Which room to book

Expert Pick
from $800–$3,000/night range

Request a Furka Deluxe Suite (one of the 45 suites with a private fireplace and lake-facing balcony). If the budget allows the Chedi Residence with 2 bedrooms isn't the move — pick the Gemsstock Suite instead, 110 m² with separate spa bathroom and a fireplace between bed and living room. All suites have the same oak-and-cashmere palette and generous free-standing copper bath.

Day by Day

Your 7-night honeymoon itinerary

1

Arrival & The Wine & Cigar Library

Train from Zurich (direct to Andermatt via Göschenen, 2 hours) or a Chedi transfer. Fireplace lit in your suite on arrival. Drinks in The Lobby — Gathy's five-storey fire-lit central space — followed by dinner at The Restaurant with the hotel's cheese tower and a Swiss wine flight.

2

Gemsstock first-tracks & Japanese dinner

Ski concierge boots you up at ski-in entrance; first gondola up Gemsstock (2,961 m) for untracked corduroy. Lunch at the mountain restaurant, then into The Spa for a couples' 120-minute ritual. Evening at The Japanese Restaurant — robata grill, sushi counter, one of the only legitimate Japanese meals in the Alps.

3

SkiArena grand tour

Full-day ski or winter-hike the combined Andermatt-Sedrun-Disentis arena (180 km, one of the largest in central Switzerland). Long lunch in Sedrun at a mountain hut. Back for an hour in the outdoor-indoor pool as the sun drops behind the Furka peaks.

4

Furka Pass & Glacier Express half-day

Catch the half-day Glacier Express segment from Andermatt west across the Oberalp Pass and back — spectacular panoramic windows, minus the full-day commitment. Afternoon: in-room fireplace, room service from The Japanese Restaurant, and a Bordeaux from the Wine & Cigar Library.

5

Deck 47 + watch boutique morning

Breakfast then a slow hour at Deck 47 — The Chedi's in-house watch collection (serious independent brands, small-batch Swiss pieces). Afternoon: husky sleigh excursion on Oberalp Pass. Evening at The Restaurant with a chef's tasting menu.

6

Full spa day & private dining

Alpine-breakfast room service, then a slow morning in the 35-metre indoor pool. Asian Spa Suite reserved for 3 hours — hammam, vitality pool, couples' treatment. Private in-suite dinner set up on your balcony with fire pit if weather allows.

7

Slow breakfast & train

Long breakfast in The Restaurant, late checkout, and direct train back to Zurich (2 hours). The Chedi arranges luggage forwarding to your next stop or Zurich airport.

Honest Assessment

What to know before you book

!

Andermatt ski-in/ski-out is real but technically the hotel is a 200-metre walk or short shuttle to the Gemsstock gondola. In deep snow it can feel further — use the ski butler to transport gear both ways.

!

The Chedi is architecturally magnificent but not especially intimate; it's a 123-key resort with quite a lot of public life. Couples seeking a very small, hushed chalet should look at The Alpina Gstaad instead.

!

Andermatt's bar and restaurant scene outside the hotel is still developing. Most couples will eat at the hotel most nights — plan dining reservations in advance, especially for The Japanese Restaurant which books out fast.

Subject: Honeymoon enquiry — The Chedi Andermatt, February 2027

Hello Chedi reservations,

We're booking our honeymoon and The Chedi is our first choice. Could you help with the following:

- Dates: 7 nights, first two weeks of February 2027 (flexible)
- Room: Furka Deluxe Suite, south-facing with fireplace; please keep the suite prepared with fire lit on arrival
- Occasion: honeymoon — any welcome amenity usually arranged would be lovely
- Dining reservations, ideally pre-booked: The Restaurant on night one, The Japanese Restaurant (sushi counter) on night two, a chef's tasting at The Restaurant on night five, private in-suite dinner on night six
- Spa: please reserve the Asian Spa Suite for a 120-minute couples' ritual on day two, and a private 3-hour suite booking on day six
- Activities: one full day with a private ski instructor (we are intermediate skiers), husky sleigh trip one afternoon, Glacier Express half-day on day four
- Transfer: private car from Zurich Airport both ways, or rail tickets with luggage forwarding — whichever you recommend for a February date

Please also share current honeymoon packages, cancellation terms, and confirm whether early check-in and late checkout are possible.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

The Chedi vs. Badrutt's Palace — which for a honeymoon?

Different eras, different vibes. Badrutt's is 1896 neo-Gothic theatre with royalty and ski-racing tradition. The Chedi is 2013 Jean-Michel Gathy pan-Asian design with the best hotel spa in the Alps. If you want heritage and pageantry, the Palace. If you want modern luxury, privacy and a genuinely great pool, The Chedi every time.

Do we need a car?

No. Andermatt has direct train from Zurich (about 2 hours), and the village is walkable. The Chedi has a car service for day trips to the Bernina Express, Furka Pass or Lucerne. In winter a car is actually an inconvenience — snow chains required, parking tight.

What's the best Japanese meal in the Alps — is it really here?

Yes. The Japanese Restaurant at The Chedi imports its robata chef and most sashimi-grade fish from Tsukiji-sourced suppliers. Book the counter for a honeymoon dinner. Pricey, but genuinely authentic and consistent with top Tokyo izakayas.

Ski level — do we need to be good skiers?

The SkiArena Andermatt+Sedrun+Disentis has terrain for every level. Gemsstock is steep and famous among expert skiers, but Sedrun and Nätschen are wide, gentle, perfect for intermediate or beginner couples. Book a private instructor on day one to match the right side of the mountain to your level.

How is the spa for couples specifically?

Extraordinary. The Asian Spa Suite is private, with its own vitality pool, steam room, and fireplace, and you can book it for 3 hours at a time — rare at this price point. The main 35-metre pool has indoor-outdoor connection under glass, ideal at dusk with snowfall.

Is summer or winter better at The Chedi?

Winter for the classic ski honeymoon; summer for hiking the Gotthard, the Furka Pass steam train, and dramatically lower rates (30-40% less). The spa is open year-round. Shoulder season (May, October) the hotel closes for 3-4 weeks annually — check dates.
