Why Here for Your Honeymoon

Greece has been making honeymooners happy for three thousand years β€” and modern Greece has added world-class resort infrastructure to one of the most beautiful settings in the Mediterranean. Santorini's volcanic caldera is the definitive Greece image: white cubes, blue domes, and an infinite Aegean. But Mykonos, Crete, and the Peloponnese offer entirely different β€” and often better β€” experiences without the Santorini crowds.

  • 5You've already done Santorini and want something genuinely different

What to Do

Top 5 Romantic Experiences in Greece

πŸŒ…
01

Santorini Caldera Sunset (from Oia)

The most photographed sunset in the world. The pink-orange light hitting the whitewashed walls of Oia as the sun drops into the caldera. Worth the crowds β€” there is nothing else like it.

πŸ’‘ Insider tip

Arrive at Oia castle 2 hours before sunset. Or book a caldera-edge table at Lauda or 1800 restaurant for the same view with champagne and no standing.

02

Private Sailing Charter Between Islands

A private gulet or sailing yacht from Santorini to Thirassia to the volcano and hot springs. The Greek islands seen from the water, at your own pace, with swimming stops.

πŸ’‘ Insider tip

Book through your hotel. Sunset caldera sailing is the standard product β€” request a full-day morning departure to Thirassia instead for fewer boats.

€400–€800 for private day charter

03

Private Acropolis Tour at Opening (Athens)

Athens is 45 minutes from Santorini by plane. Adding 2 nights before or after for a private Acropolis guide at 8am (before the crowds) transforms the trip from beach holiday to genuine European journey.

πŸ’‘ Insider tip

Context Travel runs the best private Acropolis tours. Book the first entry slot β€” you'll have the Parthenon almost to yourself.

€150–€300 for private guide
🍷
04

Santorini Volcanic Wine Tasting

Assyrtiko white wine grown in the ashy volcanic soil of Santorini is unlike any other wine in the world β€” mineral, oceanic, extraordinary. Estate Argyros and Gaia Wines offer private vineyard tastings.

πŸ’‘ Insider tip

Estate Argyros in Episkopi is the finest producer. Book a private tasting with their sommelier β€” it includes the best Vinsanto dessert wine you'll ever taste.

€60–€120 per couple

05

Snorkeling at Navagio Beach (Zakynthos)

The Shipwreck Beach β€” a rusted freighter on white sand surrounded by 200m white limestone cliffs and turquoise water. One of the most dramatic beaches in Europe, accessible only by boat.

πŸ’‘ Insider tip

Arrive by private morning boat before 10am. The beach is in shadow until late morning β€” factor this into your photo timing.

€20–€40 per person (boat trip from Zakynthos town)

Where to Stay

Areas of Greece for Honeymooners

Santorini (Oia / Imerovigli)

Caldera views, the iconic sunset

Oia is the most photographed village on earth. Imerovigli (higher, quieter) is the caldera-view honeymoon sweet spot β€” far fewer tourists than Oia with the same dramatic views. The best cave suite hotels are here.

Mykonos

Luxury, nightlife, Little Venice

Greece's most glamorous island. Excellent for couples who want a sophisticated scene alongside the beaches. Agios Ioannis and Psarou are the quiet luxury beaches.

Crete

Beaches, culture, size, variety

Greece's largest island has it all: gorges, ancient palaces, long sand beaches, excellent food. Elounda (northeast) has the most luxurious hotel concentration. The least "Instagram Greece" but the most complete destination.

Amanzoe / Peloponnese

Adults-only resort perfection, Aman seclusion

On the mainland's Peloponnese peninsula, 40 minutes from Nafplio. The Amanzoe resort sits on a promontory with 360-degree Aegean views. Adults-only by design. The quietest luxury in Greece.

Expert Advice

Insider Tips for Your Greece Honeymoon

01

Go to Imerovigli not Oia for the caldera hotel experience

Oia has the view that launched a million mood boards. Imerovigli has almost the same view, a fraction of the foot traffic, and properties like Astra Suites that are just as beautiful. Oia is a 15-minute walk.

02

Athens 2 nights is not negotiable

The Acropolis, Monastiraki market, and a dinner in the Plaka are a genuinely extraordinary addition to any Greek island honeymoon. Athens is 45 minutes from Santorini by Olympic Air. Don't skip it.

03

The meltemi wind in July–August is the enemy

The Aegean's summer northerly wind makes boat trips uncomfortable and blows pool umbrellas into the caldera. September has the same warm water and sun without the constant 30-knot gusts.

04

Caldera-facing sunrise is as good as Oia sunset

Everyone watches the Oia sunset. Almost no one watches the Santorini sunrise from Imerovigli β€” the caldera lit by dawn light with no other tourists. Set one alarm.

05

Take the cable car at Fira exactly once

The donkeys that carry tourists from the port to Fira are an animal welfare issue. The cable car takes 3 minutes. Use it and feel good about it.

What to Pack

Packing List for Greece

1
Comfortable walking shoes
Greek island paths are uneven cobblestones β€” sandals are fine for village strolling but proper soles for hikes
2
Light layers for evenings
Santorini and Mykonos evenings can be cool with the meltemi even in July. A light jacket for outdoor dining.
3
Modest clothing for churches
The blue-domed churches require shoulders and knees covered to enter
4
Motion sickness tablets
Aegean ferry crossings in summer (meltemi season) can be rough
5
Euro cash
Island tavernas, boat operators, and markets strongly prefer cash. ATMs on smaller islands run out.
6
Portable power bank
Cave suite architecture means few power points. A full-day charge before exploring is essential.

Food & Drink

What You'll Eat in Greece

Fresh-caught grilled octopus drizzled with lemon (on every terrace), saganaki (fried cheese), dakos (Cretan bruschetta), moussaka done properly, and the extraordinary seafood meze at a seaside taverna with local ouzo. Santorini's cherry tomatoes (grown in volcanic soil) are the sweetest in Greece. Fava (yellow split pea purΓ©e) from Santorini is a local delicacy. The Assyrtiko white wine is the best match for all of it.

Practical Guide

Getting to Greece

✈️

Getting There

Fly to Athens (ATH) β€” direct from most European cities (2–4h from UK). Then connect to Santorini (JTR, 45 min Olympic Air), Mykonos (MYK, 40 min), or Heraklion/Crete (HER, 1h). Alternatively, take the high-speed ferry from Athens' Piraeus port to Santorini (5h Seajet fast ferry) or fly via Aegean Airlines. Inter-island ferries connect all the major Cyclades.

πŸ“

Where to Stay

Santorini (Imerovigli and Oia for caldera hotels). Mykonos (Psarou and Agios Ioannis for beach luxury). Crete (Elounda peninsula for resort concentration). Amanzoe (Peloponnese mainland, most secluded). A multi-island trip: Athens 2 nights β†’ Santorini 4 nights β†’ Crete or Mykonos 3 nights is the classic circuit.

πŸ“…

When to Go

May–June is ideal: perfect weather, open for business, manageable crowds. September is the hidden best month β€” warm water, golden light, 30% fewer tourists than August. July–August is too crowded for Santorini specifically; manageable for Crete or Amanzoe.
