Why Here for Your Honeymoon

Sardinia is the Mediterranean honeymoon that rewards those who know. The Costa Smeralda in the northeast — conceived in 1962 by the Aga Khan and still quietly run by his Foundation — is the most exclusive stretch of beach in Europe: granite coves hiding Hermès-pink sand, turquoise water as transparent as any in the Indian Ocean, and a roster of hotels (Cala di Volpe, Pitrizza, Romazzino) that have been entertaining European royalty and Hollywood since Kennedy's era. Beyond the Smeralda, the island delivers proper Italian substance: thousands of nuraghi (3,500-year-old bronze-age stone towers), the cliffs of Baunei, the beaches of San Teodoro, and the old Genoese quarter of Alghero. Sardinia is bigger than Sicily and half as crowded — and in the shoulder months, it is achingly beautiful.

What to Do

Top 5 Romantic Experiences in Sardegna

πŸ–οΈ
01

La Maddalena Archipelago Boat Day

The Maddalena is a protected marine park of granite islets and white-sand beaches just off the Costa Smeralda. Charter a classic Riva or a gulet, anchor at Budelli's famous (protected) pink beach, swim off the boat at Spargi, lunch at sea β€” this is the definitive Sardinia day.

πŸ’‘ Insider tip

Book via Yacht Club Costa Smeralda or through your hotel concierge β€” public ferries access the islands but you miss the romance of a private anchor.

Full-day private charter $1,500–$4,000 depending on boat
🍴
02

Dinner at Cala di Volpe Grill

The Cala di Volpe Grill has been the Costa Smeralda dinner address since the 1960s. Dover sole for two, 100-bottle Sardinian cellar (Vermentino di Gallura is the local queen), and a terrace that fills with the island's summer crowd. The dress code is "Costa Smeralda elegant" β€” linen, not tees.

πŸ’‘ Insider tip

Reserve the terrace, not the interior. Ask for Table 12 (the corner overlooking the pool).

Dinner for two with wine $300–$500
β›΅
03

Sunset Sail from Porto Cervo

Porto Cervo is the Costa Smeralda's yacht harbour β€” a picture-perfect marina of $200m superyachts. A 3-hour golden-hour sail on a classic wooden day-boat with prosecco and antipasti is the low-key-romantic counter-point to the big boats.

πŸ’‘ Insider tip

Sail towards Capo Ferro lighthouse for the best angles on the coast; return just after sunset as the lights come on in Porto Cervo.

$400–$800 per couple for sunset charter
πŸ§—
04

Cala GoloritzΓ© Trek (East Coast)

Cala GoloritzΓ© is one of the most photographed beaches in Italy β€” 900-step hike down a canyon, then a tiny crescent of white pebbles and impossibly blue water with the 148m Aguglia spire overhead. A 2h drive from the Smeralda; worth a day trip with an early start.

πŸ’‘ Insider tip

Hike down at 7am to beat the midday heat. Return by boat back to Santa Maria Navarrese β€” the cliffs from the water are extraordinary.

Free; parking fee $8; add private boat return $40/person
🍷
05

Vermentino Wine Tasting in Gallura

Gallura (the Costa Smeralda hinterland) is home to Sardinia's most exciting wines β€” Vermentino di Gallura DOCG is a mineral, citrus-driven white that pairs miraculously with the local seafood. Cantina Capichera, Surrau, and SiddΓΉra all do formal tastings; a half-day visit is the perfect non-beach afternoon.

πŸ’‘ Insider tip

SiddΓΉra Winery in Luogosanto combines tasting with a 15th-century stazzo (farmhouse) lunch β€” the total experience is unforgettable.

$60–$150 per couple for private tasting + lunch

Areas of Sardegna for Honeymooners

Costa Smeralda / Porto Cervo

Ultra-luxury, celebrity-grade glamour, yacht life

The 55 km of northeast coast developed since 1962 by the Aga Khan Foundation. Cala di Volpe, Pitrizza, Romazzino. Porto Cervo marina is the social centre.

Baja Sardinia / Cannigione

Beach, boutique luxury, adults-only

Just north of the Costa Smeralda proper. Quieter, slightly better value. 7Pines, L'Ea Bianca, and the excellent sailing grounds for Maddalena day trips.

La Maddalena Archipelago

Boat days, protected beaches

A national park of 62 granite islands and islets. Budelli's famous pink-sand beach, Spargi, Caprera. Best experienced on a full-day charter from Porto Cervo or Cannigione.

San Teodoro / East Coast

Great beaches at friendlier prices

South of the Costa Smeralda, San Teodoro has some of the island's most beautiful beaches (La Cinta, Lu Impostu). Baglioni Resort Sardinia is the luxury anchor.

South Coast / Cagliari

Year-round destination, wellness, city

The capital Cagliari and the Forte Village Resort south of it. Less "Costa Smeralda" scene; longer season and better value.

Expert Advice

Insider Tips for Your Sardegna Honeymoon

01

Avoid August 1–20 at all costs

The Italian holiday fortnight (Ferragosto) is when every Italian family heads to Sardinia. Costa Smeralda restaurants become almost impossible to book, roads to Porto Cervo gridlock, and prices are 100% above shoulder season. June and September deliver a genuinely superior honeymoon experience.

02

Fly into Olbia (OLB), not Cagliari

Olbia is 30 min from Costa Smeralda. Cagliari is a 3h drive. Unless you're staying at Forte Village or Chia, Olbia is the airport β€” direct flights from London, Paris, Milan, Rome, and seasonal from Zurich, Munich, Berlin.

03

Rent a convertible for the coast road

The SP73 connecting the coves is one of the Mediterranean's best drives. A small cabriolet (Fiat 500, Jeep Wrangler) is perfect; resort hotels can arrange pickup at Olbia airport. Budget $100–$200/day in season.

04

Beach-club reservations are essential in high season

The best beaches (Liscia di Vacca, Romazzino, Principe) are public but have limited parking and popular beach clubs. Reserve via your hotel or directly β€” walking up in August is impossible.

05

Siesta is real and sacred

Most Costa Smeralda shops and restaurants close 1–4pm. Plan accordingly: long lunches at beach clubs, then shop and dinner in Porto Cervo from 7pm. Dinner at 10pm is normal in season.

What to Pack

Packing List for Sardegna

1
Dressy resort evening wear
Porto Cervo at dinner is elegant β€” linen suits and dresses, not tees and flip-flops. Cala di Volpe Grill and similar have real dress codes.
2
Reef shoes or sandals with grip
Many beaches (Principe, Li Cuncheddi) have small pebbles or rocky entries. Regular flip-flops make ingress uncomfortable.
3
Good snorkel mask
Maddalena water clarity is extraordinary. Hotel snorkels are often mediocre β€” bring your own or buy a proper one in Porto Cervo.
4
Proper sun hat
Sardinia sun is unforgiving. A wide-brim straw hat from the market at Olbia is both practical and photogenic.
5
Light layer for boat evenings
Maddalena returns after sunset get breezy. A cashmere wrap or linen shirt is essential for the sail home.

Food & Drink

What You'll Eat in Sardegna

Culurgiones (hand-pinched potato-mint ravioli, a Sardinian miracle); fregola con arselle (pasta-pearl with clams); bottarga (grey-mullet caviar, shaved over spaghetti); porceddu (slow-roasted suckling pig, a Sunday feast); fresh spiny lobster from the east coast (aragosta alla Catalana); seadas (fried pastry with pecorino and honey); pane carasau (paper-thin crisp bread); mirto (myrtle-berry liqueur, local digestivo); Vermentino di Gallura white wine; Cannonau red wine (one of the world's highest polyphenol content, genuinely). Sardinian cuisine is rustic, ingredient-led, and underrated β€” a revelation.

Practical Guide

Getting to Sardegna

✈️

Getting There

Fly to Olbia Costa Smeralda (OLB) β€” 30 min from most Costa Smeralda hotels. Direct summer flights from London (2h 45m), Paris, Milan, Rome, Munich, Zurich, Vienna; connections from NYC via Rome or Milan (~11h total). Alternative airports: Alghero (AHO) for the west coast, Cagliari (CAG) for the south. Ferries from Livorno, Genoa, Civitavecchia, and Naples if bringing a car. Most hotels arrange a chauffeur transfer from OLB β€” budget $80–$180 one-way.

πŸ“

Where to Stay

Classic 7-night itinerary: 4 nights Costa Smeralda (Cala di Volpe, Pitrizza or Romazzino) β†’ 2 nights boat-based exploring Maddalena β†’ 1 night pre-return at L'Ea Bianca or Baja. For shoulder-season value: 5 nights 7Pines or Baglioni + 2 nights cultural Cagliari + Forte Village. For 10 days: add 3 nights on the east coast (San Teodoro) for different beaches.

πŸ“…

When to Go

June and September are the sweet spot β€” warm enough to swim, elegant rather than frenzied, prices noticeably below peak. May and early October are gentler (excellent for non-beach honeymooners who love food and wine). Avoid July 20–August 31 unless your budget is genuinely unlimited β€” Costa Smeralda at peak is Ferrari-pricing.
