Cretan Malia Park is the surprise property of the island — a 1970s family-owned resort relaunched in 2022 after a complete restoration as a Design Hotels member, set within an extraordinary 8-hectare palm and bougainvillea garden directly on the Malia beach. The design language is California-meets-Crete: rattan, terracotta, raw linen, hand-thrown ceramics, a soundtrack curated by the Athens design crowd. The 197 keys are spread across low-rise garden bungalows (some with private pools), and the public spaces — the open-air library, the cocktail bar under the pergola, the dining terrace shaded by 40-year-old palms — are the most photogenic resort spaces in Crete. The reason honeymooners choose Cretan Malia Park over the much more expensive Elounda cluster is the design ambition and the price differential (roughly 40% below Domes of Elounda for an equivalent room category). Malia town's central strip (1.5km west of the resort) is loud British-tourist nightlife in July–August — the resort itself is shielded behind its garden walls but the surrounding area is not the picturesque Cretan village some couples expect.
The resort beach is sand-and-pebble, not the white sand of the Caribbean — the garden is the unique selling point, not the beach itself.
Cretan Malia Park is family-friendly with a partial adults-only section but is not strictly adults-only. Honeymooners requiring complete adults-only should book Numo Ierapetra instead.
