The Taj Malabar sits on the tip of Willingdon Island in Cochin harbour, facing directly at the famous Chinese fishing nets and Fort Kochi's heritage waterfront — and it is the easiest first-night Kerala honeymoon hotel in the state. Built in 1935 by the British as a colonial guesthouse and lovingly extended by the Taj group, it splits into two wings: the original heritage block (low-ceilinged, teak-floored, deeply atmospheric) and the modern tower (proper sea-view balconies, contemporary furnishings, more reliable plumbing). For a honeymoon you want the heritage wing — specifically a Sea View Deluxe with a balcony onto the harbour. Watching the cargo ships and dawn fishermen with a tray of South Indian breakfast and filter coffee on day one of a Kerala trip sets the entire register of the holiday. The Jiva Spa offers a serious Ayurveda menu (consultations included for full packages), the infinity pool overhangs the water, and the Rice Boat restaurant — half-converted kettuvallam, half-veranda — serves the best traditional Kerala food in Cochin. Heritage wing, without question. The character, balconies, and harbour views are why you came. The tower has newer plumbing but the soul is in the colonial block.
Is the Ayurveda spa programme worth booking?
The introductory consultation and 90-minute Abhyanga are excellent for a first-time taster. For a serious cleanse stay 7+ nights in Marari at a dedicated Ayurveda resort instead.
Do we need a car or can we walk to Fort Kochi?
Use the hotel ferry — 5 minutes across the harbour, free for guests, runs every 30 minutes. Far better than driving around.
Is the harbour view really worth the upgrade?
Yes. The Chinese fishing nets, the cargo ships at dawn, and the sunset over the water are the reason you stay here. Inland rooms overlook a car park.
