The Verdict
Worth it for your honeymoon?
Bawah Reserve is the most extraordinary private-island all-inclusive in Southeast Asia and arguably the most luxurious overwater-bungalow honeymoon outside the Maldives. The Reserve occupies six islands and three lagoons inside its own private archipelago in Indonesia's Riau region, accessed only by chartered seaplane from Singapore (via Batam) — a 70-minute flight that lands directly in the central lagoon. Just 13 Overwater Bungalows and 22 Garden, Beach and Tree Suites are scattered across the main island, leaving immense distances of jungle, beach and reef between guests. The all-inclusive rate covers every meal, every drink (including premium wines and spirits), all spa treatments, all excursions, all watersports, all guided snorkels, and the seaplane transfer itself — meaning honeymooners arrive, hand over the wallet, and do not see a bill again. For couples who want a private-island fantasy with no children, no day-trippers, no neighbouring resorts, no roads, and no decisions, Bawah is unrivalled.

Ocean Bawah Bungalow — one of the 13 overwater bungalows with a private deck, plunge pool, outdoor shower, hammock-net suspended over the water, and steps directly into the turquoise lagoon. The bungalows at the far end of the jetty are the most private, facing only open water and the uninhabited outer islands of the Reserve.

Day by Day
Your 7-night honeymoon itinerary
Singapore Layover & Seaplane Arrival
Fly into Singapore (SIN) the day before to avoid any risk of missing the seaplane window. Bawah's transfer team meets you at your Singapore hotel, escorts you through the Tanah Merah ferry terminal for the 90-minute high-speed crossing to Batam, and onwards to the seaplane apron. The 70-minute flight east lands directly in Bawah's central lagoon — a moment of pure cinema. Settle into your Ocean Bawah Bungalow, swim from your private steps, and have a sunset cocktail brought to your deck.
Reef Snorkel & House-Reef Day
Begin with the resort's complimentary house-reef snorkel directly off the jetty — Bawah's reefs are part of the same Coral Triangle system as Raja Ampat, and even casual snorkellers spot reef sharks, turtles and parrotfish from the bungalow steps. After lunch on Boat House beach, take a kayak across the central lagoon to the smaller island of Sanggah for a beach-only afternoon. Dinner is set up under lanterns at Treetops, the resort's open-air canopy restaurant.
Aura Spa & Yoga Pavilion
The Aura Spa at Bawah is included in the all-inclusive — a full daily treatment per guest. Book the four-hand Balinese honeymoon ritual, taken in a wooden pavilion suspended above the jungle canopy. Follow with sunset yoga in the over-water yoga pavilion overlooking Marina Beach. Dine on the private deck of your bungalow with the in-villa chef preparing a five-course tasting.
Six-Island Boat Tour
Bawah's flagship excursion: a full-day private boat tour of the six islands and three lagoons that make up the Reserve. The boat anchors at uninhabited beaches for snorkel stops, lands on a deserted sandbar for a champagne picnic, and motors through the gin-clear water of the inner lagoon where you can see coral shadows from the surface. Return at golden hour for a sunset cocktail at the Treetops bar.
Mangroves & Conservation Tour
Paddle a kayak through the protected mangrove channels on the eastern side of the main island — the channels open into hidden inland lagoons inhabited by sea eagles and reef egrets. After lunch, join the Anambas Foundation marine conservation tour to learn how the Reserve funds reef restoration, plastic-removal patrols and a turtle-monitoring programme across the wider archipelago. Beach barbecue dinner in the evening with a live acoustic set.
Sandbar Picnic & Sunset Cruise
The signature Bawah honeymoon experience — a private sandbar lunch arranged for two, dropped on a tide-revealed strip of white sand surrounded by turquoise water with no other land in sight. After your private chef leaves, you have the sandbar to yourselves until pickup. Return for an early shower, then board the resort's traditional pinisi sailboat for a champagne sunset cruise around the outer islands.
Final Snorkel & Seaplane Departure
One last morning swim from the bungalow steps, a leisurely breakfast on the deck, and a final house-reef snorkel where you've now learned the residents — the same hawksbill turtle, the same reef shark patrolling the drop-off. The seaplane lifts off the lagoon late morning, retracing the route to Batam and the ferry to Singapore, where you can connect to your onward flight that evening.
Honest Assessment
What to know before you book
Access is exclusively via Bawah Reserve's chartered seaplane from Batam (90 minutes by ferry from Singapore) — there is no alternative route, and weather can occasionally delay flights by a day. Build a buffer night in Singapore on either side.
April to October is the best weather window. November through March brings the northeast monsoon with rougher seas and reduced visibility — the resort closes for parts of the off-season for maintenance.
The resort is intentionally low-tech: Wi-Fi works in public areas and bungalows but is deliberately throttled, and there is no in-villa television. This is a digital-detox property by design.
Bawah is not strictly adults-only — children over 7 are welcomed — but the property's pricing, layout and atmosphere make it overwhelmingly an adult-couple destination. Honeymooners rarely encounter other guests, let alone families.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is Bawah Reserve good for honeymooners?
Bawah is one of the most outstanding honeymoon properties on earth. The combination of an entirely private archipelago, only 35 keys spread across six islands, complete all-inclusive pricing (covering the seaplane, spa, snorkels and premium drinks), and the seclusion of the overwater bungalows makes it close to the platonic ideal of a honeymoon resort.
Is Bawah Reserve better than the Maldives?
For couples who want overwater bungalows without the long-haul flight from Asia, and who prefer a single private archipelago to a string of resort islands, Bawah is genuinely a Maldives alternative. The marine life is excellent if not Maldivian, the architecture is more rustic-luxe than glossy, and the all-inclusive value (with seaplane and premium drinks bundled) often comes out ahead. Many guests describe it as more soulful than the Maldives.
When is the best time to visit?
April to October is optimal — calm seas, clear water, and reliable seaplane operations. May, June and September offer the best balance of weather and lower-season pricing. The resort typically closes for parts of January and February during the heaviest monsoon months.
What does the all-inclusive rate cover?
Bawah's all-inclusive is unusually comprehensive: round-trip seaplane from Batam, all meals at all restaurants, all drinks including premium wines and spirits, daily spa treatments, all non-motorised watersports, guided snorkel trips, kayak and paddle-board excursions, and a daily yoga class. Diving and motorised excursions are extra.
How do we get there?
Fly to Singapore (SIN), spend the night, then take the 90-minute Bawah Reserve ferry to Batam Centre, where the resort's seaplane is waiting. The seaplane flies 70 minutes east to the Reserve's central lagoon. Total transit time from Singapore is roughly 4 hours. Bawah handles everything once you reach Singapore.
What's the best room for a honeymoon?
An Ocean Bawah Bungalow is the obvious honeymoon choice — overwater, with a plunge pool, hammock-net over the lagoon, and direct ladder access into the water. Bungalows further along the jetty offer more privacy. Tree Suites are the alternative for couples who prefer a forest-canopy view to overwater.
