Cempedak Private Island

The Verdict
Worth it for your honeymoon?
Cempedak is one of the most romantic adults-only private-island retreats in Asia and a near-perfect honeymoon property — a 17-hectare island in the Riau Archipelago, accessed by a 2-hour ferry from Singapore, with just 20 hand-built bamboo villas (each named after an Indonesian fish) and an absolute no-children policy that makes the entire island feel like a couple's retreat. Sister property to the family-focused Nikoi Island, Cempedak was conceived from the start as a honeymoon destination: every villa has a private rock-edge plunge pool, every angle of the island is photogenic, the bamboo carpentry is among the most beautiful in Southeast Asia, and the whole property runs on quietly applied sustainability principles — solar power, rainwater harvesting, locally trained staff, and reclaimed-timber construction. Honeymooners describe Cempedak in near-religious terms: the closest thing to the Maldives within a two-hour ferry of Singapore, but with more soul, more privacy, and at a fraction of the cost.

Day by Day
Your 7-night honeymoon itinerary
Singapore Ferry & Welcome
Fly into Singapore (SIN), then take Cempedak's transfer service: an air-conditioned coach to Tanah Merah ferry terminal, a 90-minute fast ferry to Bintan, and a 30-minute road and 5-minute boat transfer onwards to Cempedak. Total transit from Singapore is roughly 2.5 hours. Arrive in time for a welcome cocktail at the Dodo Bar, settle into your bamboo villa, and have dinner at the open-sided main dining pavilion as the sun sets over the South China Sea.
House Reef & Pool Day
Spend the morning slowly: a long swim in your villa's private rock-edge plunge pool, a beach breakfast in your villa, and a snorkel from the main beach where the resident hawksbill turtles graze on seagrass. Lunch is at the Mangrove Beach Bar. Afternoon yoga at the bamboo yoga deck overlooking the western cliffs. Sunset cocktails at the Rock Bar — built into the cliff itself, with waves breaking below the bar stools.
Spa Day & Mangrove Kayak
Cempedak's spa pavilion is set on the cliff facing the open sea. Book the four-hand Cempedak honeymoon ritual — a two-hour treatment combining Balinese massage, body scrub and floral bath. After lunch, paddle the resort's kayaks through the mangrove channels on the southern side of the island, where you can see the bamboo villas appear and disappear among the trees. Dinner served on your private villa deck.
Island Hopping & Beach Picnic
The signature Cempedak excursion: a day-long boat trip to the surrounding deserted islands of the Riau Archipelago, with snorkelling stops at three different reefs and a champagne picnic on a deserted sandbar. The boat returns to Cempedak in time for sunset drinks at the cliff-edge Rock Bar. Dinner is the resort's weekly Indonesian feast — a long table of regional specialities served family-style.
Tennis, Rock Bar & Stargazing
A more active morning: tennis at the bamboo court, beach volleyball, or a long jungle walk around the entire island perimeter (about an hour at slow pace). Lazy afternoon by the main pool. Pre-dinner drinks at the Rock Bar with the in-house mixologist's signature cocktail menu. After dinner, head to the beach for stargazing — Cempedak's no-light-pollution position reveals the full Milky Way and the Southern Cross.
Sunset Cruise & Private Sandbar Dinner
The Cempedak honeymoon highlight — a private sunset cruise on the resort's traditional bamboo-sailed boat, departing from the main jetty with champagne and canapés, sailing into the open archipelago for sunset, and returning under starlight. Dinner is then served on a tide-revealed sandbar visible only at low tide — a private candlelit table for two on a strip of white sand with no other land in any direction.
Final Morning & Singapore Departure
One last morning swim in your villa's plunge pool, breakfast on the deck, and a slow farewell. The fast ferry back to Singapore departs late morning, putting you in Singapore in time for an evening flight onwards. Many couples build a single buffer night in Singapore on the way home for a city day before flying home — an ideal counterpoint to a week of bamboo and beaches.
Honest Assessment
What to know before you book
Access is via Singapore — there is no direct international airport in Bintan. Build a buffer night in Singapore at either end to avoid missing the morning ferry; the last ferry from Bintan to Singapore is mid-afternoon.
May to October is the dry season and the optimal window. November to March brings the northeast monsoon with rougher seas and more rain — the resort remains open but ferry crossings can occasionally be rougher.
Cempedak is genuinely remote and intentionally rustic — the bamboo villas have no air-conditioning (large fans and natural ventilation only), no televisions, and limited Wi-Fi. This is a deliberate design choice that some guests find magical and others find too austere.
There are 20 villas and only 40 guests on the island at full occupancy. Demand far outstrips supply, especially for the cliff-side villas and Treetop Villa 20 — book 9–12 months ahead for high season.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is Cempedak good for honeymooners?
Cempedak is among the most romantic honeymoon properties in Southeast Asia. The combination of strict adults-only policy, only 20 villas on a private island, every villa with a private plunge pool, a 2-hour ferry from Singapore, and the most beautiful bamboo carpentry in the region makes it close to a textbook honeymoon resort. It is overwhelmingly the choice of newlyweds and anniversary couples.
Is Cempedak better than the Maldives?
For couples coming from Asia or those who want a Maldives-style escape without the long-haul flight, Cempedak is genuinely the better choice. The privacy, design integrity, food, and sustainability story are arguably stronger than most Maldives resorts at a fraction of the cost. The Maldives still wins on overwater bungalows and pure turquoise water — Cempedak's water is clear but darker — but the gap is smaller than expected.
When is the best time to visit?
May to October is the dry season and ideal — calm seas for the ferry, less rain, and excellent visibility for snorkelling. April and November are shoulder months with often perfect weather and lower demand. December to March brings the northeast monsoon with more rain and rougher ferry conditions, though the resort stays open year-round.
Is Cempedak truly adults-only?
Yes — Cempedak is strictly adults-only with a minimum age of 17. Sister property Nikoi Island, on a different island in the same archipelago, is the family-friendly equivalent. The strict policy is rigorously enforced and is one of the property's defining features for honeymooners.
How do we get there?
Fly to Singapore (SIN). Cempedak's transfer team meets you at your Singapore hotel and escorts you to Tanah Merah ferry terminal for the 90-minute fast ferry to Bintan. From Bintan, a 30-minute road transfer and 5-minute boat transfer brings you to Cempedak. Total transit time from Singapore is roughly 2.5 hours.
What's the best room for a honeymoon?
Treetop Villa 20 is the property's most coveted honeymoon room — the most private cliff-edge villa with the best sunset view on the island. Cliff Villas 18 and 19 are excellent alternatives. All villas have a private rock-edge plunge pool, an outdoor bamboo bathtub, and an open-sided design. Book 9–12 months ahead for the most-requested villas.
