The Verdict

Worth it for your honeymoon?

Domaine Les Crayères is the historic Champagne flagship — a 1904 belle époque mansion built by the Pommery family on a 7-hectare park at the southern edge of Reims, with the most elegant Relais & Châteaux experience in the region. Twenty rooms in the main mansion, the two-Michelin-star Le Parc restaurant under chef Philippe Mille (one of the finest tables in northern France), the casual Le Jardin brasserie, an extraordinary champagne cellar (a 1,500-reference list), and the only luxury hotel in Reims itself with garden grounds — which means you can walk to the Pommery and Ruinart cellars in 15 minutes and to the cathedral in 25. The differentiator versus Royal Champagne up the road in Champillon is exactly the opposite trade-off: Crayères wins on historic atmosphere, on dining provenance (the Mille two-star kitchen is one of the most assured in France), and on the genuinely intimate 20-room scale; it loses on the panoramic view (the property is in town, in a park, with no vineyard panorama) and on the spa (smaller, more traditional). For honeymoon couples whose Champagne vision is the proper Relais & Châteaux belle époque mansion with serious cellar visits and serious dining, this is exactly the right address. The park is one of the most peaceful retreats in northern France — formal gardens, ancient trees, and the sense of being in the country while in the heart of the cathedral city.

Room Recommendation

Which room to book

Expert Pick
from $550–$2,500/night range

The Suite category in the main mansion — 60-80m² with park views, original 1904 joinery, and the historic mansion feel. The Suite Pommery on the top floor is the celebrity-press suite. The Chambre Prestige rooms are the value tier with park views. Avoid the rooms on the courtyard side which lose the park view.

Day by Day

Your 7-night honeymoon itinerary

1

Arrival from Paris

TGV from Paris Gare de l'Est to Reims Centre (45 min), 10-minute taxi south to the Domaine. Welcome champagne (a Pommery vintage) in the salon, dinner at Le Parc — the two-Michelin-star Philippe Mille tasting menu paired with the Crayères cellar.

2

Reims Cathedral

Walk 25 minutes (or hotel car) to Notre-Dame de Reims — the Gothic cathedral where 33 French kings were crowned, the 13th-century stained glass, the Chagall windows, and the Smiling Angel. The Palais du Tau next door for the coronation regalia. Lunch at Le Foch. Late afternoon at the Crayères pool.

3

Pommery and Ruinart Cellars

Walk 15 minutes to Pommery (the closest house — Madame Pommery's 1860 mock-Tudor cellars are spectacular) for the morning visit. Lunch at the Crayères Jardin brasserie. Afternoon at Ruinart (the oldest champagne house, 1729 chalk cellars 30m below ground). Return for the second Mille dinner.

4

Épernay Avenue de Champagne

Drive 25 minutes south to Épernay for the day — Moët & Chandon's 28km of cellars for the spectacle, Pol Roger for the small-house intimate visit (Churchill's house), lunch at La Cave à Champagne. Drive 10 minutes up to Hautvillers for the Dom Pérignon abbey. Late return.

5

Krug and Bollinger Visits

The grand-house honeymoon day — a pre-booked private visit at Krug in Reims in the morning (the only house using exclusively cask-aged base wines, prestige tastings of the Grande Cuvée and Clos du Mesnil if requested). Drive 30 minutes south to Aÿ for an afternoon at Bollinger (the RD tasting). Evening at the Crayères spa.

6

Côte des Blancs Vigneron Day

Hire a driver. South of Épernay to Cramant, Avize, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger — tastings at Pierre Péters, Larmandier-Bernier, and ideally Selosse (booking 6+ months ahead). Lunch at the village. Evening at Le Parc for the final two-star menu.

7

Slow Morning and Departure

Final breakfast on the park terrace, a last walk through the gardens, and the 10-minute taxi to Reims station for the TGV back to Paris.

Honest Assessment

What to know before you book

!

Crayères is on the south edge of Reims — it feels country, but the city is at the gate. Couples expecting full rural isolation should consider Royal Champagne (Champillon) instead.

!

The spa is small and traditional — no infinity pool, no aerial deck. For full spa days, Royal Champagne 30 minutes south is the play.

!

Le Parc has only 8 tables — reserve at the time of room booking for the most romantic evenings, especially Friday and Saturday.

Subject: Honeymoon inquiry — Domaine Les Crayères

Dear Domaine Les Crayères reservations team,

We are planning our honeymoon for [DATES] and would love to stay 4-6 nights. Could you please advise on availability for a Suite (or the Suite Pommery if available)?

A few questions:
1. Honeymoon turndown (a Pommery vintage, in-room amenities)?
2. Le Parc tasting-menu reservation for our most special evenings — ideally a quiet table for two?
3. Private cellar visits at Pommery, Ruinart, Krug, and Bollinger — your concierge access?
4. Private chauffeur from Reims station and for vineyard days?

Thank you,

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Good for honeymooners?

Crayères is one of the most romantic hotels in northern France — the belle époque mansion, the 17-acre park, the two-Michelin-star kitchen, the walkable cellar visits. Best for couples whose priority is historic atmosphere and serious dining over panoramic-view spa.

Best time to visit?

May through October. May for the gardens and the Reims spring light, September for the autumn vines and the harvest visits at the maisons. Christmas weekends are magical for the cathedral and the Reims Christmas markets.

Book in advance?

6-9 months ahead for the Suite categories. The Suite Pommery books 9-12 months ahead. Direct booking via Relais & Châteaux or the hotel — honeymoon package gets a vintage Pommery welcome and a Mille tasting-menu credit.

Adults-only?

No — Crayères accepts children but the 20-room scale, the focus on the restaurant, and the formal park setting mean the guest mix is overwhelmingly couples and senior wine-country travellers.

Best room type?

Suite category in the main mansion with park views. Suite Pommery on the top floor for the honeymoon room. Chambre Prestige for the value tier with the same park outlook.

How to get there?

TGV from Paris Gare de l'Est to Reims Centre (45 min), 10-minute taxi. The hotel arranges chauffeur transfers. From CDG, the direct TGV (some services) is 30 minutes.
