Domes Zeen Chania, a Luxury Collection Resort
crete, greece · ★★★★★
The Verdict
Worth it for your honeymoon?
Domes Zeen is the most design-forward resort in Crete — a low-rise, all-villa-and-suite property on the Akrotiri peninsula 10 minutes from Chania old town, opened in 2021 as a Luxury Collection Marriott property and styled like a Cretan village reimagined by a Copenhagen architect. The 156 keys spread across stone-and-timber bungalows, swim-up pool suites, and a small ribbon of grey-pebble beach on the calm Akrotiri bay. The reason honeymooners choose Zeen over the Elounda cluster is simple: you can walk into the Venetian harbour of Chania for dinner, hike the Samaria Gorge or drive to Elafonissi the next day, and return to a resort where the dining is genuinely original (Pavilion is the best resort dining room on the island), the spa is excellent, and the architecture itself is the entertainment.

Room Recommendation
Which room to book
Beach Residence with Private Pool — the front-row villas on the bay path with a 9m private pool, outdoor lounging deck, indoor-outdoor bath, and direct beach access in 60 seconds. For honeymooners with a higher budget, the One-Bedroom Beachfront Villa adds a private garden and a small outdoor kitchen. Avoid the standard Garden View Suite — the views into the resort interior are pleasant but the upgrade to a pool category transforms the stay.

Day by Day
Your 7-night honeymoon itinerary
Arrival at Akrotiri
Fly into Chania International (CHQ) — 15 minutes from the resort. Welcome cocktail at Akron, the rooftop sundown bar, with views across Akrotiri bay. Dinner at Pavilion, the signature dining room — set tasting menu showcasing Cretan mountain cooking by chef Eyal Shani's protégé team.
Chania Old Town
Walk or shuttle to Chania harbour (15 min) — the Venetian lighthouse, the lanes around Splantzia square, the Agora central market. Lunch at Tamam in a converted Ottoman hammam. Afternoon pool time, evening sunset cocktail at Akron rooftop.
Elafonissi Day
Drive 2 hours southwest to Elafonissi pink-sand lagoon. Arrive by 11am, claim sunbeds, swim across the lagoon (max depth 1m). Lunch at Innachorion taverna in Vlatos village en route back. Spa massage at Soma Wellness on return.
Samaria Gorge or Balos Lagoon
Pick your hike day: Samaria (16km, 7 hours through Europe's longest gorge, May–Oct) or the easier Balos Lagoon boat trip (turquoise water, no hiking required). Either is the day of physical adventure that justifies a rest day after.
Rest, Spa & Pool
A pure rest day — late breakfast at Raw Bar (juices, grain bowls, sea-front terrace), a 90-minute couple's massage at the Soma Spa, afternoon at the main pool with cabana service, sunset cocktails on the villa pool deck.
Akrotiri Peninsula Drive
Drive the Akrotiri loop — Agia Triada monastery, Gouvernetou monastery, the spectacular cliff path to Katholiko gorge and the small Stavros beach (where Zorba the Greek was filmed). Lunch at a fish taverna at Marathi. Evening dinner at Pavilion's à la carte menu.
Departure
Final breakfast at Raw Bar, a last swim in the villa pool, the 15-minute transfer to CHQ. A week here flies — most couples extend by two nights on the way out.
Honest Assessment
What to know before you book
The grey-pebble beach is small (60m) and the calm Akrotiri bay does not offer the dramatic cliff scenery of Elounda — this is a beach-as-secondary, design-and-food-as-primary property.
The Pavilion tasting menu is among the most expensive on Crete (€140–€180 per person before wine) — pace your evenings between Pavilion and Raw Bar or Chania town dinners.
Akrotiri is closer to Chania airport than Heraklion — combining Zeen with Elounda requires a 3.5-hour cross-island drive each way.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Good for honeymooners?
Yes — Zeen is genuinely original, design-led, and creates a sense of place that no other Crete resort matches. Honeymooners who care about architecture, food, and proximity to Chania old town find this their dream Cretan base.
Best time to visit?
May, June, September, and the first half of October are ideal — warm sea, long days, the resort uncrowded. July–August are peak honeymoon months but the resort fills and books need to be made 3–4 months out.
Book in advance?
Beach Residence pool villas book 4–6 months ahead for June–September. The standard Garden View Suite has more flexibility. Mention honeymoon at booking — the resort upgrades when capacity allows.
Adults-only?
No. Zeen accepts families but the architecture, the food programme, and the price skew strongly couples and design-aware travellers. Children are present but discreet.
Best room type?
The Beach Residence with Private Pool is the essential Zeen room — front-row position, private 9m pool, direct sea access. For higher budgets, the One-Bedroom Beachfront Villa adds garden and kitchen.
How to get there?
Chania International (CHQ) is 15 minutes by taxi (€25). Heraklion (HER) is 2.5 hours by car. The resort arranges all transfers and rental cars on arrival.
