The Verdict

Worth it for your honeymoon?

Jamaica Inn is the unchanging classic — a 49-room adults-only hotel on a private 700-foot powder-sand beach two miles east of Ocho Rios, opened in 1958 and operated by the same family ever since. Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller honeymooned here. Winston Churchill stayed in Cottage 5. The dress code at dinner is still 'gentlemen wear long trousers,' the cottages still have no televisions, and the staff (many of whom have worked here for 30+ years) remember returning guests' drink preferences. This is honeymoon as a vanishing tradition — and it remains genuinely magical.

Room Recommendation

Which room to book

Expert Pick
from $550–$1,800/night range

The signature accommodation is the West Wing Verandah Suites — each is essentially a private apartment with a 600-square-foot living-room verandah suspended directly over the Caribbean, where breakfast and afternoon tea are served by your assigned butler. For maximum privacy and price tier, the Cottages — particularly Cottage 4 (Churchill's) and Cottage 5 — sit on the cliff with their own pools, a private cove, and dedicated cottage staff. White Suite is a separate one-bedroom villa once used by Sir Noel Coward.

Day by Day

Your 7-night honeymoon itinerary

1

Arrival & Verandah Welcome

Fly into Sangster (MBJ) and transfer 90 minutes east to Ocho Rios (Ian Fleming OCJ is just 20 minutes away if connections allow). Welcome rum punch on your verandah as the butler unpacks, then the first dinner at the open-air dining room above the beach — the cooking is genuinely good, and gentlemen wear collared shirts and trousers.

2

Private Beach & Snorkel Reef

Jamaica Inn's beach is 700 feet of fine white sand, almost private — only hotel guests use it, capped at 49 rooms. The reef is a 50-yard swim from shore and the snorkeling is excellent. Long lunch on the beach terrace, afternoon nap under the almond trees. The pace at Jamaica Inn is genuinely slow.

3

Dunn's River Falls & Mystic Mountain

Dunn's River Falls is just 15 minutes east — go on the early arrival to climb the falls before cruise-ship crowds (the inn arranges a guide). Combine with Mystic Mountain's chairlift and bobsled for a genuinely fun morning. Lunch at Miss T's in Ocho Rios, afternoon back at Jamaica Inn for tea and croquet on the lawn.

4

GoldenEye & Firefly Tour

Drive 30 minutes east to GoldenEye for a tour of Ian Fleming's Bond writing house, then 15 minutes inland to Firefly — Noel Coward's preserved hilltop home with what remains the most spectacular long view in Jamaica. Coward's modest grave is in the front garden. A genuinely cultured day for honeymoon couples interested in 20th-century literary history.

5

Spa Cottage & Beach Day

Jamaica Inn's spa is the small Ocean Spa Cottage perched on a cliff above the beach — couples' massages happen on a private deck with the Caribbean below. Morning treatment, lazy afternoon on the beach, and the resort's signature 4pm afternoon tea on the verandah (a tradition since 1958).

6

Blue Hole Inland Adventure

Day trip to the Blue Hole (Island Gully Falls) above Ocho Rios — turquoise plunge pools, rope swings, and small waterfalls hidden in the jungle. Far quieter and more romantic than Dunn's River. Lunch at a roadside jerk stand in Faith's Pen on the way back. Final formal dinner at Jamaica Inn that evening.

7

Final Verandah Breakfast & Departure

Final breakfast served by the butler on the West Wing verandah — fresh papaya, ackee and saltfish, and Blue Mountain coffee with the Caribbean below. Last swim, then the short transfer to OCJ or 90 minutes back to MBJ. Jamaica Inn's returning-guest rate is among the highest of any Caribbean property — many couples come back every year for decades.

Honest Assessment

What to know before you book

!

Jamaica Inn is genuinely traditional — dress codes at dinner, no children, no televisions in cottages, no nightlife — couples wanting modern resort energy or buzzy dining scenes will find it sleepy.

!

The hotel is not all-inclusive — meals, drinks, and excursions are charged separately; budget realistically for full-board rates that may exceed the room rate over a week.

!

The beach is small (700 feet) and intimate, beautiful but not the long-walk beach of Negril; couples wanting endless sand should plan a Negril day trip.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Good for honeymooners?

Jamaica Inn is among the Caribbean's most genuinely romantic honeymoon hotels — the verandah suites with butler-served breakfast directly over the sea, the small private beach, the unchanging 1950s service tradition, and the adults-only intimacy create exactly the timeless honeymoon experience that has drawn Monroe, Churchill, and Coward for 65+ years.

Best time to visit?

Mid-December through April is dry season and Jamaica Inn's social peak — returning winter guests, cool evenings, dinner-jacket dress codes. May and early June offer excellent value with warm seas. June through October has hurricane risk. November is excellent shoulder season.

Book in advance?

West Wing Verandah Suites and the Cottages book 4 to 8 months ahead for high season — the property has only 49 rooms and a strong returning-guest base. Cottage 4 (Churchill's) and Cottage 5 are the first to go. Off-season has more flexibility.

Adults-only?

Yes — Jamaica Inn is strictly adults-only (16+ in some periods, fully 18+ in peak season). The atmosphere is genuinely couples and adult-traveller focused, with about 78% couples and a meaningful share of long-married guests on annual returns.

Best room type?

The West Wing Verandah Suites are the signature Jamaica Inn experience — the 600-square-foot private verandahs over the sea where butler-served meals happen are the defining detail. The Cottages (especially 4 and 5) are the most private with their own pools and cottage staff. White Suite is the ultimate splurge.

How to get there?

Ian Fleming International (OCJ) at Boscobel is just 20 minutes away — small charter and regional flights. Sangster (MBJ) is the main international gateway with a 90-minute private transfer east along the north coast (the inn arranges all transfers). The drive itself is scenic.
