The Tasman, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Hobart

The Verdict

Worth it for your honeymoon?

The Tasman opened in late 2021 — Hobart's newest serious luxury hotel, occupying three different architectural eras across a single block on the Parliament Square waterfront: an 1840s sandstone heritage building, a 1940s art deco wing, and a contemporary glass-and-stone new build. 152 rooms across the three. The Marriott-owned Luxury Collection brand brings consistent polish that the older Hobart hotels can't match — proper room service, full spa, indoor lap pool, and the city's first hotel cocktail bar (Mary Mary) at international level. The restaurant Peppina by chef Massimo Mele is one of the city's top three. The Tasman is two blocks from the MONA ferry, walking to Salamanca and Battery Point. Caveats: the three-era architecture means rooms vary radically — the heritage rooms (1840s sandstone) have the most character, the new-build rooms have the best views. Service can feel corporate vs the Henry Jones' more personal touch. For honeymooners who prioritize amenity completeness (spa, pool, room service) over heritage character, The Tasman is the most amenity-rich Hobart option.

Room Recommendation

Which room to book

Expert Pick
from $480–$1,500/night range

Heritage Spa Room in the 1840s sandstone building with freestanding bath. Or Pavilion Suite in the new-build wing with the largest harbour view. Avoid Tasman Premium standard rooms — they lack the architectural character that makes this hotel.

Honest Assessment

What to know before you book

New-build rooms have the best views, heritage rooms the most character — trade-off either way.

152 rooms feels more corporate than Henry Jones or MACq.

!

Indoor lap pool is small (15m) but functional.

!

Heritage building rooms have heritage quirks — no air-con in some, request specifically if needed.
