Worth it for your honeymoon?
MACq 01 opened in 2017 next door to the Henry Jones, designed around a single creative concept — every one of the 114 rooms is themed around a real Tasmanian character (the bushranger, the convict surgeon, the whaler, the suffragette), with that person's biography on the door and an artifact in the room. Sounds gimmicky on paper; in practice it's the most thoughtfully curated hotel concept in Australia. The architecture is contemporary Tasmanian — local stone, blackbutt timber, oversized windows looking onto Hobart's marina. The restaurant Old Wharf is excellent waterfront dining. The Lobby bar serves the largest Tasmanian whisky selection in the world. Caveats: at 114 rooms it's larger and slightly less personal than the Henry Jones. The storytelling-theme rooms are not for everyone — some find the conceit charming, others want a plain hotel. But for honeymooners who want a thoughtfully designed waterfront base with the strongest Tasmanian-character cocktail bar in the country, this is the smart Hobart pick. Walking distance to MONA ferry, Salamanca, Battery Point, and every serious Hobart restaurant.
