Honeymoon Guide
Norway
Fjords, aurora, and slow Nordic luxury — the most cinematic honeymoon landscape in Europe.
Why Here for Your Honeymoon
Norway is the European honeymoon for couples who want their photographs to look unreal. Mile-deep glacial fjords, the midnight sun in summer, the aurora borealis from October through March, sauna-and-fjord bathing rituals, and a particular brand of Nordic luxury that values quiet over glitz. The country runs on slow travel: a fjord hotel for two nights, a glass-roof igloo for two more, a stylish Oslo design hotel as a bookend. There is no Norway honeymoon resort cluster — every property is its own destination, three to six hours apart.

What to Do
Top 5 Romantic Experiences in Norway
Northern Lights from a glass-roof igloo
Lyngen North above the Arctic Circle (Oct–March) puts you under glass lying in bed as the aurora dances. Dog-sledding and reindeer farm visits round out the days. Tromsø, Senja, and Kirkenes are the alternate aurora bases.
Book a minimum of 3 nights for any aurora hunt — the lights are unpredictable and one cloudy night ruins a 2-night trip. Ideal months: Feb–March (driest, longest dark hours).
Geirangerfjord cruise from a clifftop hotel
Storfjord Hotel above Geiranger gives you the fjord from 800m above. Day trips by RIB or kayak into the fjord itself. Seven Sisters and Bridal Veil waterfalls. Lunch at Hotel Union Geiranger.
Avoid July–August cruise-ship rush. June and September are sublime. Norwegian Cruise Line ships dock in Geiranger town — clifftop hotels are above the noise.
Wood-fire sauna over a fjord at sunset
Most Norwegian luxury lodges have a wood-fire sauna built directly over water — Hotel Union Øye, Storfjord, Juvet, 62°NORD properties. Sauna at 80°C, plunge into 8°C fjord, repeat. The defining Norwegian honeymoon ritual.
Schedule for 9–10pm in summer (still light) and 4–5pm in winter (sunset over the fjord). Bring a good Wool & Prince base layer for the post-plunge.
Salmon fishing on the Eira or Stryn rivers
Norway invented sport salmon fishing. The Eira and Stryn rivers near Storfjord and Hotel Union Øye are world-class. Half-day with a guide, all gear included, catch-and-release for big Atlantic salmon.
Best months: June–early August. Ask for a guide who speaks English — most do. The fishing is genuinely difficult — go for the experience, not the catch count.
Helicopter scenic flight over Sunnmøre Alps
A 30-min flight from Hotel Union Øye over the Sunnmøre Alps and Hjørundfjord is the single most photogenic 30 minutes of any Norway trip. Drop-off and pickup on a remote summit for a glass of champagne.
Book directly through your hotel — they have the trusted operator. Weather-dependent; build flexibility into your itinerary.

Expert Advice
Insider Tips for Your Norway Honeymoon
Book aurora trips in February–March, not December
December has the longest dark hours but worst weather (cloud cover). February–March balances long dark periods with clearer skies and longer daylight for non-aurora activities.
Use Vy trains between cities, not flights
Oslo–Bergen on the Bergen Railway is one of the world's most scenic train rides. Pre-book 1st class with the panorama windows for $200/couple — better than a $400 flight and far more memorable.
Eat at the hotel restaurant, not "outside"
Outside restaurants in fjord villages close at 9pm and are tourist-driven. Hotel restaurants like Speilsalen (Britannia), Christian (Hotel Union Øye), and the Juvet glasshouse dining room serve the best New Nordic cuisine in the country.
Pack for two seasons, even in summer
Summer fjord weather can swing from 25°C sun to 8°C wind in 2 hours. Pack a Patagonia Houdini wind shell, merino base layer, hat, and gloves even in July.
Budget for at least 2 internal flights
Norway is 1,750km north-to-south. Oslo–Tromsø is 2h by SAS or Norwegian. Factor 2 internal flights ($300–$500 per couple total) into any north + south itinerary.

What You'll Eat in Norway
New Nordic cuisine has its high-end Norwegian counterpart at restaurants like Speilsalen (Britannia, 1 Michelin), RE-NAA (3 Michelin in Stavanger), Maaemo (3 Michelin in Oslo), and Christian (Hotel Union Øye). Classic Norwegian: smoked salmon, king crab from Kirkenes, fårikål (mutton stew), brunost (brown cheese), and fresh Atlantic cod. Akvavit is the spirit of choice; Norwegian craft beer (Nøgne Ø, 7 Fjell) is excellent.
Practical Guide
Getting to Norway
Getting There
Fly to Oslo Gardermoen (OSL — direct from London 2h, NYC 7.5h, Tokyo 13h) or Bergen (BGO — for west coast fjord access) or Tromsø (TOS — for Arctic/aurora). Internal flights via SAS, Norwegian, and Widerøe connect every region. The Bergen Railway (Oslo to Bergen, 7h) is the most scenic train route in the country.
Where to Stay
Honeymoon-friendly itineraries cluster around (a) Western Fjords (Geirangerfjord, Hjørundfjord) for 4-5 nights, (b) Oslo or Bergen as a city bookend for 2 nights, (c) Lofoten or Tromsø for an additional 3-4 nights for aurora or midnight sun. Driving is excellent quality but distances are vast — internal flights save days.
When to Go
June–August: midnight sun, all sights open, peak prices, can be busy in Geiranger. September: best balance — autumn color, aurora returns, lower crowds. October–March: aurora season, snow activities, Christmas markets in December. April–May: shoulder month, lush waterfalls, low crowds.
