The Verdict

Worth it for your honeymoon?

Amankora Paro is the most romantic base camp in the Himalayas — 24 stone-and-rammed-earth suites tucked into a pine grove a short drive from Bhutan's only international airport. For honeymooners, the combination of crackling bukhari woodstoves in every suite, candlelit dinners by the Aman fire, and direct access to the Tiger's Nest trailhead makes this the gateway lodge for an unforgettable couples journey.

Room Recommendation

Which room to book

Expert Pick
from $2,000–$4,500/night range

Book a standard Suite — every suite at Amankora Paro is identical in size and layout, so the splurge isn't on category but on length of stay. Each one has a king bed angled toward the bukhari fireplace, a deep soaking tub, and floor-to-ceiling windows looking out over Paro valley. Ask for a suite on the upper terrace for the most privacy.

Day by Day

Your 7-night honeymoon itinerary

1

Arrival in Paro

Land at Paro airport on the dramatic Druk Air approach, meet your Aman guide, and transfer 15 minutes to the lodge. Welcome ara (Bhutanese spirit) by the fire, hot stone bath in your suite, early dinner with valley views.

2

Tiger's Nest hike

Pre-dawn breakfast then drive to the Taktsang trailhead. The 4-5 hour round-trip hike to the cliffside monastery is Bhutan's signature experience. Picnic lunch at the cafeteria viewpoint. Return to the lodge for a hot stone bath infused with artemisia leaves.

3

Paro dzong and farmhouse lunch

Morning visit to Rinpung Dzong, the fortress-monastery overlooking Paro town. Cross the cantilever bridge for prayer wheel rotations. Lunch at a traditional farmhouse with red rice, ema datshi, and butter tea. Afternoon archery lesson at the lodge.

4

Drive to Thimphu

Two-hour scenic drive over the Chuzom confluence to Bhutan's capital. Visit the giant Buddha Dordenma statue, then the Tashichho Dzong at sunset when the king's flag comes down. Overnight at Amankora Thimphu (or return to Paro).

5

Drukpath day-trek

A guided day-section of the Drukpath trail through blue-pine forest and high alpine lakes. Saddle horses available for the steep sections. Sunset prayer flag tying ceremony at a hillside chorten.

6

Spa and textile day

Couples massage at the Aman spa, followed by an afternoon weaving demonstration with a local thagzo master. Private tea ceremony in the library. Romantic dinner served fireside in your suite.

7

Departure

Final morning bukhari coffee, prayer wheel walk in the lodge garden, transfer to Paro airport. Druk Air departures are early morning only — plan accordingly.

What to know before you book

!

Bhutan tourism requires booking via a licensed tour operator and pre-arranged visa — Aman handles this end-to-end but expect 4-6 weeks lead time.

!

The Sustainable Development Fee is $200 per person per night, payable in addition to the nightly rate.

!

Paro sits at 2,200m elevation and Tiger's Nest tops out at 3,120m — arrive a day early if you're sensitive to altitude.

!

Internet is intentionally minimal across all Amankora lodges — this is part of the experience but worth knowing if you need to stay connected.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is Amankora Paro good for honeymooners?

Exceptional. The fireplace suites, candlelit Bhutanese dinners, hot stone baths, and the shared Tiger's Nest hike create the kind of slow, awe-filled moments that define a great honeymoon.

When is the best time to visit?

March-May (rhododendron bloom) and September-November (clear skies, Tsechu festival season) are the prime windows. Avoid June-August monsoon if leeches and rain bother you.

How far in advance should we book?

Aim for 4-6 months ahead, especially if you want to combine multiple Amankora lodges. Aman's Bhutan team builds custom multi-lodge itineraries with internal transfers included.

Do we need a guide in Bhutan?

Yes — Bhutanese law requires foreign visitors to travel with a licensed guide and driver. Aman provides both, and your guide stays with you throughout the journey.

What's the best room type?

All 24 suites are identical in size and design, so book any standard Suite. Request an upper-terrace suite for extra privacy and the best valley views.

How do we get to Amankora Paro?

Fly Druk Air or Bhutan Airlines into Paro International Airport — connections from Bangkok, Singapore, Delhi, and Kathmandu. Aman's team meets you at arrivals and the lodge is a 15-minute drive.
