The Verdict

Worth it for your honeymoon?

Borgobianco is the modern, accessible alternative to the famous Savelletri masserias — a 38-room resort built in 2008 on a 15-acre olive estate 5 km inland from Polignano a Mare on the Adriatic coast, designed in a contemporary white-washed Pugliese vernacular that nods to the masseria tradition without faking 18th-century stone. The position is the genuine selling point: a 6-minute drive to Polignano a Mare (the cliff town with the Grotta Palazzese cave restaurant), 25 minutes from Bari airport (the closest international gateway for honeymooners flying in from London or Frankfurt), and 30 minutes from Alberobello and the trulli. The amenity offer is full: a large outdoor saltwater pool, a heated indoor pool, the 1,200 sqm B-Spa with a thalasso circuit, hammam, and 8 treatment rooms (the operation is genuinely credible — the spa was the first in Italy to be certified by the Italian Thalassotherapy Association after San Domenico), tennis, a kids’ club, and the Due Cortili restaurant under chef Stefano Veneziani serving creative Pugliese cooking on the courtyard terrace. The honeymoon move is one of the new Suite Borgo with private rooftop terrace, or a Junior Suite Olivella with garden. The defining moment: dinner at Grotta Palazzese in Polignano (the famous sea-cave restaurant, 10 minutes away) as a half-day excursion from the masseria, then back for an aperitivo in the gardens. Caveats: the contemporary architecture lacks the genuine 16th-century historical feel of San Domenico, Torre Maizza or Borgo Egnazia — for purist masseria fans this is the immediate disqualifier; the immediate setting is more “Pugliese countryside” than dramatic; and service is excellent at four-and-a-half-star level rather than the choreographed five-star of the Rocco Forte property. But for honeymooners flying into Bari, wanting a serious spa, and prioritising Polignano-a-Mare access over the dense Itria Valley masseria cluster, Borgobianco is the obvious pick and at substantially lower rates than its more famous neighbours 30 km south.

Room Recommendation

Which room to book

Expert Pick
from $450–$2,400/night range

A Suite Borgo with private rooftop terrace — the most contemporary and private rooms in the resort. For the more traditional option, a Junior Suite Olivella with garden access. Avoid the standard Camera Trifora rooms — lovely but smaller and without the private outdoor space.

Honest Assessment

What to know before you book

!

Contemporary build, not a real 18th-century masseria. Choose San Domenico or Torre Maizza for historic.

!

Service is excellent at 4.5-star level — not the choreographed Rocco Forte 5-star.

!

Setting is Pugliese countryside, not dramatic. The property is the destination, not the location.
