The Verdict

Worth it for your honeymoon?

Cambridge Beaches is the oldest cottage colony on Bermuda — open since 1923, occupying a private 30-acre peninsula at the western tip of the island in Sandys Parish, with five private beaches around its own coastline and a resolutely adults-only policy that makes it the most natural honeymoon address on Bermuda for couples who want quiet, intimacy, and a complete absence of children. The accommodation is the antithesis of the modern hotel: 94 pastel pink and lemon Bermudian cottages and suites scattered across the peninsula, each freestanding, many with private terraces directly above the water, all with the white-stepped limestone roofs and louvred shutters that define the island vernacular. No two cottages are alike, the gardens are mature and lush, and the resort feels less like a hotel than a private estate someone has handed you keys to. The five small beaches around the headland mean you can have a beach to yourself most mornings. The Spa at Cambridge is genuinely excellent. The trade-off is the far-west location — Sandys is 40 minutes by taxi from Hamilton and 50 minutes from BDA — and a slightly old-world atmosphere (the dining room used to require jackets every night; it now requests them only at the formal restaurant) that some couples find romantic and others find dated.

Room Recommendation

Which room to book

Expert Pick
from $550–$2,800/night range

Pegem Cottage and Skye Cottage are the legendary honeymoon picks — small freestanding one-bedroom cottages built right on the cliff's edge with private terraces over Mangrove Bay, the bedroom windows opening onto the water, and the smallest of the resort's five beaches accessed by a switchback path five metres from your door. For the splurge, the Cambridge House Suite is the original 1923 main house's two-bedroom suite (book as a one-bedroom honeymoon) with a private dock on the harbour.

Day by Day

Your 7-night honeymoon itinerary

1

Arrival at Sandys

Fly into BDA, 50-minute taxi to the west end ($75-85). Welcome cocktail at the Tamarisk Room, sunset on the cottage terrace as the western sky turns pink over the open Atlantic. First-night dinner at the Tamarisk Room (jackets requested for men).

2

Five Beaches Day

Walk the peninsula loop and discover the resort's five private beaches in sequence — Long Bay, Pegem Beach, Cambridge Beach, Mangrove Bay, and the small cove below the spa. Lunch at Breezes on the harbour. Afternoon at the marina pool, dinner at Breezes (casual, harbour-side).

3

Dockyard & Sailing

Short taxi to the Royal Naval Dockyard (15 min) — Bermuda Maritime Museum, glassblowing studios, the National Museum. Lunch at the Frog & Onion pub. Afternoon sunset sailing charter from the resort's own marina into the Great Sound. Dinner back at the Tamarisk Room.

4

Horseshoe Bay & South Shore

Scooter or take a taxi 30 minutes east to Horseshoe Bay for the day on the iconic south shore pink sand. Walk the connecting trail east. Lunch at the Reefs Beach Club. Return for a couples' spa treatment, dinner at Breezes.

5

Hamilton Ferry Day

Take the ferry from the Dockyard to Hamilton (35 min, $5) — a scenic route past the Great Sound. Spend the day in the capital — Front Street, Bermuda National Gallery, drinks at the 1609 bar at the Hamilton Princess. Return ferry, dinner on property.

6

Final Quiet Day

A full slow day at the cottage — breakfast on the terrace, morning at the small beach below your cottage, lunch at Breezes, afternoon at the marina infinity pool with a Dark 'n Stormy. Final dinner at the Tamarisk Room (the chef's tasting menu is the splurge to close).

7

Beach Morning & Departure

A final hour on the cottage terrace, breakfast in bed, and the 50-minute taxi to BDA. The far-west location adds 30 minutes to departure but the quiet of the cottage makes the morning feel longer than the drive.

Honest Assessment

What to know before you book

!

Sandys Parish is the furthest point from the airport (50 minutes) and 40 minutes from Hamilton dining — couples wanting easy access to the city should choose Hamilton Princess instead.

!

The cottage colony is the oldest hotel on Bermuda and some rooms reflect their age — the property has been carefully maintained but does not have the new-build polish of the St. Regis or the design edge of the Loren.

!

The five private beaches are small coves rather than long strands — beautiful and private but not the wide-sand experience of Horseshoe Bay; the south shore is a 30-minute scooter.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Good for honeymooners?

Yes — Cambridge Beaches is among the most romantic addresses on the island for honeymooners who want adults-only quiet, cottage privacy, and an old-world Bermuda atmosphere. The 79% couples-review rate is the highest on the island; this is overwhelmingly a honeymoon and anniversary destination.

Best time to visit?

May, June, September and October are the sweet spots — warm enough to swim, smaller crowds, better value than peak. The cottage colony closes briefly January–February for refurbishment most years.

Book in advance?

Pegem and Skye Cottages — the legendary honeymoon picks — book 4-6 months ahead for peak summer. Off-season (May, October) is 6-8 weeks. The Cambridge House Suite books a year ahead.

Adults-only?

Yes, strictly — guests must be 18 or older. Cambridge Beaches is one of the very few genuine adults-only resorts on Bermuda and the only one with cottage colony architecture.

Best room type?

Pegem Cottage or Skye Cottage for the honeymoon — freestanding cliff cottages with private terraces directly over Mangrove Bay. The Cambridge House Suite for the splurge — original 1923 main house with private harbour dock.

How to get there?

L.F. Wade International (BDA) is 50 minutes by taxi to Sandys Parish ($75-85). The resort arranges transfers. Direct flights from JFK (2h), Newark, Boston, Toronto, and London Gatwick. The Dockyard ferry connects west end to Hamilton (35 min, $5).
