The Verdict
Worth it for your honeymoon?
Post Ranch Inn is the most romantic hotel in the United States — a 39-room adults-only resort built into 100 acres of cliff-edge meadow 1,200 feet above the Pacific Ocean on the Big Sur coast, opened in 1992 by Mike Freed and architect G.K. ‘Mickey’ Muennig (whose organic-architecture designs deliberately disappear into the landscape — green roofs, redwood cladding, no building rising above the cypress canopy). Every room is a freestanding structure with a wood-burning fireplace, private deck, freestanding bath facing the view, and either an ocean panorama (the Ocean House and Pacific Suite categories) or a redwood-forest immersion (the Tree House category, suspended on stilts among the redwoods). There are no televisions. The Sierra Mar restaurant suspended at the cliff edge on three glass walls is one of the great romantic dining rooms in America, with a 12,000-bottle cellar and a tasting menu that holds a Forbes Five-Star rating and a Wine Spectator Grand Award. The spa offers six treatment rooms in cliff-edge cottages. Two infinity pools (the heated upper pool with the most photographed water’s-edge view in California, and the lap pool below) project toward the horizon. The honeymoon proposition is, simply, the most cinematic adults-only luxury experience in North America: the views, the privacy of a freestanding room, the cliff-edge pool at sunset, the Sierra Mar tasting menu with the Pacific dropping into fog, and the Big Sur night sky (designated Dark Sky area) — the entire honeymoon scene is here. Caveats are tightly contained: the price is genuine ultra-luxury (entry rates from ~$1,800 in shoulder seasons, $2,500+ peak); booking lead time is 9–12 months for the best categories; and the property is intentionally rustic-luxe, not formal-marble — couples expecting Mandarin Oriental polish should pick a different coast. The honeymoon-defining move is the Pacific Suite for 4 nights with two Sierra Mar dinners and a full-day spa pause.

Room Recommendation
Which room to book
An Ocean House or a Pacific Suite — both with direct ocean views, fireplace, freestanding bath, and private deck above the cliff. The Pacific Suite is the largest and has the most spectacular view. For a redwood-forest contrast, the Tree House category is also iconic but loses the ocean. Skip the Mountain House rooms — the view is the entire point.
