The Verdict

Worth it for your honeymoon?

Ventana Big Sur is the second great cliff-edge adults-only resort on the Big Sur coast — a 59-room Alila by Hyatt property on 160 acres immediately south of Post Ranch Inn, sharing the same headland and effectively the same view, with a more contemporary architectural language and roughly two-thirds the per-night price. Opened in 1975 and substantially rebuilt in 2017 when Alila took over, Ventana now operates as adults-only (minimum age 18), all-inclusive (rates include breakfast, lunch, and unlimited wine and beer through the day — a genuine differentiator), and with a more relaxed atmosphere than the highly choreographed Post Ranch. Rooms are distributed across the cliff in clusters connected by wooded paths — the highest-grade Vista Suites have ocean views, private decks, fireplaces, and freestanding baths; the Glampsites (luxury safari-style canvas tents on platforms in the redwood grove) are an unusual and genuinely fun honeymoon option for one or two nights of the trip; and the Sur House restaurant has terrace dining with the Pacific in front. Two pools (one heated upper, one Japanese soaking bath), the Spa Alila (six treatment rooms, signature redwood-essence massage), and walking trails through the property to the cliff-edge meditation deck and the sunset terrace round out the proposition. The honeymoon move at Ventana is the Vista Suite for 3 nights, with one Glampsite night for variety, with daily yoga and a Sierra Mar non-resident dinner reservation at Post Ranch one evening for the special-occasion moment. Caveats: Ventana is not Post Ranch — the architecture is good rather than transcendent, the cliff-edge moments are slightly less dramatic, and the dining at Sur House is good rather than world-class. But for 70% of the experience at 60% of the price with all-inclusive food and drink — Ventana is the smart honeymoon move.

Room Recommendation

Which room to book

Expert Pick
from $1,200–$3,800/night range

A Vista Suite (premier ocean-view room with private deck, fireplace, freestanding bath) is the honeymoon room. For variety, swap one night for a luxury Glampsite in the redwood grove. Avoid the Garden Suites without ocean view — the view is the differentiator.

Honest Assessment

What to know before you book

!

Adults-only — minimum age 18. No exceptions.

!

Highway 1 closure risk from mudslides — check Caltrans before flying.

!

Sur House dining is good but not Sierra Mar level — for the special-occasion night, book a non-resident reservation at Post Ranch’s Sierra Mar.

Subject: Honeymoon inquiry — Ventana Big Sur

Dear Ventana reservations,

We’d like 4 to 5 nights for our honeymoon [DATES] in a Vista Suite, plus one night in a Glampsite if availability allows.

Questions:
1. Honeymoon arrival turndown (champagne, flowers)?
2. Couples’ redwood-essence treatment at Spa Alila?
3. Daily yoga schedule and reserved spots?
4. Assistance with a Sierra Mar non-resident dinner reservation at Post Ranch?
5. Transfer from Monterey airport?
