Honeymoon Guide
Rwanda
One hour with a mountain gorilla family — the most transformative honeymoon hour in Africa.
Why Here for Your Honeymoon
Rwanda is the African honeymoon for couples seeking a single profound encounter rather than a beach week. The mountain gorillas of Volcanoes National Park — fewer than 1,000 individuals worldwide, half of them in Rwanda — are accessed via $1,500/day permits and a guided 2-6 hour trek through bamboo forest. The lodges that serve this experience (Singita Kwitonda, One&Only Gorilla's Nest, Bisate, Sabyinyo Silverback) are some of the most architecturally significant in East Africa. Combined with a few nights at Magashi Camp (Big 5 in Akagera) or Nyungwe House (chimps + canopy walk), the honeymoon becomes the rare African trip that's active, intimate, and meaningful in equal measure.

Is This Right for You?
Rwanda for Honeymooners
Perfect for you if…
- 1Couples seeking a single life-defining wildlife experience over a beach week
- 2Honeymooners willing to invest ($1,500/permit/day per person + lodge rates) for genuine exclusivity
- 3Those drawn to architecturally significant lodges in remote settings
- 4Conservation-minded travelers (Rwanda funnels gorilla revenue back into the parks)
- 5Reasonably fit couples (treks can be 2–8 hours through hilly bamboo forest at altitude)
Skip it if…
- 1You want a beach honeymoon — Rwanda is landlocked and lake-only
- 2You have less than 5 nights in Rwanda — you need 3 lodges minimum to do the loop properly
- 3You're uncomfortable with altitude (2,500m+ at the Volcanoes lodges)
- 4You want nightlife or city energy — Kigali is calm and restaurant-focused, not vibrant
- 5You have mobility limitations — even "easy" treks involve uneven terrain
What to Do
Top 5 Romantic Experiences in Rwanda
Mountain Gorilla Trek
The trek of a lifetime. After a pre-dawn briefing at Kinigi park HQ, your group of 8 is allocated to one of the habituated gorilla families (Susa, Sabyinyo, Agashya, Hirwa, etc). You trek 2-6 hours through bamboo forest. Once you find the family, you spend exactly 1 hour with them — silverbacks, mothers, juveniles, infants. They are completely indifferent to your presence. The most extraordinary 60 minutes most couples ever spend.
Book 9-12 months ahead via your lodge. Request a moderate-difficulty family if you have any joint issues. Gaiters, walking sticks, and porters ($25 tip) are provided by all luxury lodges.
Golden Monkey Trek (bamboo forest)
A lighter, easier 1.5-hour round-trip into the bamboo forest to find the golden monkey families — endemic to the Albertine Rift. Cheerful, photogenic, and a perfect "second trek" day for couples who don't want to do back-to-back gorilla treks.
Book 1-2 days after your gorilla trek for variety. Bring a long lens (200mm+) — the monkeys are constantly moving in the bamboo canopy.
Dian Fossey grave hike
A demanding 4-5 hour round-trip hike through the rainforest to the Karisoke Research Center ruins and Fossey's simple grave beside her favourite gorilla, Digit. This is the emotional heart of Volcanoes National Park — not for tourists, for those who care.
Read "Gorillas in the Mist" before the trip. Best done 2-3 days into your stay, after you've had the gorilla encounter and understand the stakes.
Nyungwe canopy walk + chimp trek
A 2-3 night detour to southern Rwanda's Nyungwe National Park: walk the 90m-long Igishigishigi suspension bridge 60m above the rainforest floor, plus a chimp trek (~70% sighting success) through Afromontane forest.
Combine with the gorilla loop only if you have 9+ nights in-country. Otherwise stick to Volcanoes + Akagera.
Akagera Big 5 game drive (Magashi)
Rwanda's only Big 5 ecosystem — eastern savannah Akagera National Park, where lions were reintroduced in 2015 and rhinos in 2017. Magashi Camp's 6 tents on Lake Rwanyakazinga give you boat safaris (hippos, crocs) plus open-vehicle game drives.
Plan 2-3 nights here as the perfect counterpoint to the high-altitude Volcanoes portion. Wilderness arranges direct flights between Bisate and Magashi airstrips.

Expert Advice
Insider Tips for Your Rwanda Honeymoon
Book 9-12 months ahead — permits are limited to 96/day countrywide
Gorilla permits are sold via Rwanda Development Board to operators on a strict daily cap. Your lodge secures them with the booking; trying to add a permit later may fail.
Acclimatise for 24h before your first trek
Volcanoes lodges sit at 2,500-2,700m. Spending day 1 at the lodge (no trek) before tackling day 2 dramatically improves your trek experience.
Tip your porter $25-$50 per trek
Porters carry your bag, lend a hand on steep sections, and earn most of their income from tips. They are often ex-poachers turned guides — supporting them protects gorillas.
Combine 4 nights Volcanoes + 2-3 nights Akagera
The classic 7-night Rwanda honeymoon: Kigali arrival (1 night) → Volcanoes (3-4 nights, 2 gorilla treks) → Akagera (2 nights savannah) → Kigali departure (1 night). Don't add Nyungwe unless 9+ total nights.
Visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial — but on departure day
It's essential context for understanding modern Rwanda but emotionally heavy. Best visited on your final day in-country, not before the gorilla trek.

What You'll Eat in Rwanda
Rwandan cuisine: isombe (mashed cassava leaves with peanut paste), brochettes (skewered grilled meat), ubugali (cassava porridge), igitoki (cooking bananas), Akabanga (the legendary Rwandan chili oil). Lake Kivu sambaza (small fish) is the local specialty. Coffee is exceptional — Rwanda is a top global single-origin source. Restaurants Heaven (Kigali), Repub Lounge (Kigali), and lodge-based dining are the highlights.
Practical Guide
Getting to Rwanda
Getting There
Fly to Kigali International (KGL) — direct from Brussels (Brussels Airlines, 8h), Doha (Qatar Airways, 7h), Addis Ababa (Ethiopian, 2h), Nairobi (Kenya Airways/RwandAir, 1.5h), Amsterdam (KLM, 8h), Istanbul (Turkish, 8h). Lodges arrange ground transfers ($200-$400 each way) or charter flights between regions ($600-$1,200/couple).
Where to Stay
Standard 7-night itinerary: 1 night Kigali → 4 nights Volcanoes (2-3 gorilla treks) → 2 nights Magashi Akagera. The 9-10 night extension adds 2-3 nights in Nyungwe for chimps + canopy walk. Don't skip the night either side of Volcanoes — drive times are real.
When to Go
June-September (long dry season) and January-February (short dry) are peak. Wet seasons (March-May, October-November) offer lower rates and dramatic green forests but harder trail conditions.
