The Verdict
Worth it for your honeymoon?
Bisate is Wilderness Safaris' architectural masterpiece — six spherical, thatched-roof villas built into the eroded cone of an extinct volcano with direct views to Bisoke, Karisimbi, and Mikeno. Every guest plants an indigenous tree on arrival as part of the lodge's 100,000+ tree reforestation programme that's slowly knitting back the buffer zone of Volcanoes National Park. This is the most architecturally significant lodge in East Africa.

Room Recommendation
Which room to book
All six Forest Villas are essentially identical — each 95 m² with a private deck, in-room fireplace, and a circular living space rendered in volcanic stone and Rwandan textiles. Villas 5 and 6 sit highest on the cone with the cleanest sight lines to the volcanoes. There are no inferior rooms here.

Day by Day
Your 7-night honeymoon itinerary
Arrival in Kigali to Bisate
Fly into Kigali, 2.5h drive to Bisate via Musanze. Welcome arrival ritual — tree planting in the reforestation zone with your name marker. Briefing on tomorrow's gorilla trek over a glass of South African red. Three-course Rwandan dinner overlooking the volcanoes.
First gorilla trek
Pre-dawn breakfast, transfer to Kinigi park HQ, family allocation. Trek 2–6h depending on the family's location. One precious hour with the gorillas. Hot lunch on return. Afternoon by the fireplace, optional in-room massage. Dinner of Rwandan goat curry.
Reforestation morning + golden monkeys
Morning planting more indigenous saplings (you can return years later to see your tree mature). Afternoon golden monkey trek (1.5h, easier terrain). Sundowners on the lodge's volcanic-stone fireplace deck.
Second gorilla trek
Different family, different ascent, equally extraordinary. Most repeat guests say the second trek is the more emotional one — you understand the gestures, you anticipate the silver-back's gaze. Return for honey-glazed lake fish dinner.
Dian Fossey grave hike
Demanding 4–5h round-trip hike to the Karisoke Research Center ruins and Fossey's resting place. Lunch packed by the lodge. Evening private dining in your villa with a 3-course tasting menu and Pinot Noir from Stellenbosch.
Community walk + spa afternoon
Visit the village of Kinigi with the lodge's community partner — primary school, banana-beer house, traditional healer. Picnic lunch under a fig tree. Afternoon massage in your villa, ending in the hot stone bath by the fireplace.
Farewell ceremony & Kigali
Closing-circle ceremony with the lodge team — Rwandan coffee, your tree status update, a bottle of single-origin to take home. Drive to Kigali via the Genocide Memorial. Late lunch at Heaven Restaurant. Evening departure.
Honest Assessment
What to know before you book
Lodge is at 2,565m altitude — book at least 24h to acclimatise before any trek.
Spa is in-room only (no dedicated spa pavilion); pool is replaced by deep soaking tubs.
Six villas total — books out 9–12 months in advance for peak dry season.
Reforestation tree planting is mandatory (couples find it deeply meaningful, not optional fluff).
Wet seasons (Mar–May, Oct–Nov) make trails challenging; lodge stays open year-round.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Good for honeymooners?
Among the most romantic lodges on earth — six private spherical villas, fireplaces in the room, panoramic volcano views, and the shared act of planting your honeymoon tree creates a souvenir that grows for decades.
Best time to visit?
June–September long dry season is peak. January–February short dry season is also excellent. Wet seasons offer lower rates but tougher hiking.
Book in advance?

Adults-only?
No formal restriction, but the lodge atmosphere and 15+ minimum trekking age effectively make it adult.
Best room type?
Any of the six Forest Villas — the architecture is identical. Request villa 5 or 6 for the highest cone position.
How to get there?
Fly to Kigali (KGL). 2.5–3h transfer to Bisate by Wilderness's private vehicle. Helicopter charter possible from Kigali (~$2,500 one-way per couple).
