Room Recommendation

Which room to book

Expert Pick
from $1,800–$4,500/night range

Forest Lodges (90 m²) are exceptional — private deck, fireplace, deep soaking tub looking onto the eucalyptus canopy. For honeymoons, request a lodge furthest from reception (lodges 18–21) for total seclusion. The Villa One is overkill for a couple unless adding family later.

Day by Day

Your 7-night honeymoon itinerary

1

Arrival & briefing

Fly into Kigali (KGL), 2.5h scenic drive to Kinigi (private vehicle with park ranger en route). Welcome warming drinks by the firepit. Briefing with the head guide on tomorrow's gorilla trek family allocation. Early dinner of Akabanga-spiced lamb.

2

First gorilla trek

5am breakfast, 6am check-in at Kinigi park HQ. Family allocation (Susa, Sabyinyo, Agashya, Hirwa or other groups). Trek 2–6h to find your gorilla family. 1 hour with them. Return to lodge for late lunch on the deck. Spa massage and pool. Dinner under the stars.

3

Golden monkey trek + spa afternoon

Lighter trek (1.5h round-trip) to find the endangered golden monkeys in the bamboo forest. Picnic lunch back at the lodge. Couples' Wellness Ritual at the spa (90 min). Evening fireside cocktail with the lodge sommelier.

4

Second gorilla trek (different family)

Most guests do a second trek — different family, different terrain, different memory. Return for the chef's signature Rwandan tasting menu — banana sambusas, isombe stew, Lake Kivu tilapia.

5

Dian Fossey grave hike

3h hike to the Karisoke Research Center site and Dian Fossey's grave (where she's buried beside her favourite gorilla Digit). Emotional, beautiful, important. Light lunch on the trail. Afternoon recovery in the heated pool.

6

Iby'iwacu cultural village + departure to Akagera or Nyungwe

Morning at the Iby'iwacu community village — Intore dance, banana beer brewing, traditional medicine. Afternoon transfer to Akagera (Big 5) or Nyungwe (chimps) for two more nights, OR an extra night here for the spa.

7

Farewell breakfast & Kigali return

Final breakfast on your private deck — Rwandan single-origin coffee, fresh papaya, eggs from the kitchen garden. Slow drive back to Kigali via the Genocide Memorial — challenging but essential context. Departure flight.

Honest Assessment

What to know before you book

!

Gorilla permits are $1,500 per person per day — a separate cost on top of the room.

!

Treks are unpredictable in length: 2 to 8 hours depending on the gorilla family. Decent fitness required.

!

Altitude is 2,500m+. Allow a day to acclimatise before the first trek.

!

Wet seasons (Mar–May, Oct–Nov) make trails muddy — guides provide gaiters and walking sticks.

!

Two-night minimum to do even one trek; most agents recommend 3–4 nights here.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Good for honeymooners?

Yes — the lodges are private and adult-friendly, and the post-trek combination of fireplace, deep soaking tub, and deck dinner is deeply romantic. The shared experience of the gorilla encounter is bond-forming.

Best time to visit?

June–September (long dry season, drier trails, peak permits). January–February is the short dry season, also excellent. Avoid March–May heavy rains if you have any joint issues for the trek.

Book in advance?

9–12 months ahead — gorilla permits are limited to 96 per day across all operators, and One&Only secures them with the booking. Lodges 18–21 sell first.

Adults-only?

No, families with children 12+ are welcome (gorilla treks have a 15+ age minimum). The lodge is large enough that families and couples don't overlap much.

Best room type?

Forest Lodge with a corner position (lodges 18–21) for maximum seclusion. Villa One only if traveling as a multi-room family.

How to get there?

Fly to Kigali (KGL — direct from Brussels, Doha, Addis, Nairobi, Amsterdam). 2.5–3h drive to Kinigi via private hotel transfer. Helicopter from Kigali (~45 min) can be arranged.
