The Verdict
Worth it for your honeymoon?
Singita Kwitonda is the gold standard of gorilla-trek lodges and arguably the most romantic safari address in Africa. Eight enormous suites and the four-bedroom Kataza House sit on 178 acres bordering Volcanoes National Park, each with a wraparound deck, indoor and outdoor fireplaces and uninterrupted views of the Virunga volcanoes — the kind of place where you wake up next to your partner, look out at Karisimbi at dawn and forget the rest of the planet exists.

Room Recommendation
Which room to book
Book one of the standard Kwitonda Suites for honeymooners — they are already vast (around 200 sqm) with double-sided fireplaces, a deep soaking tub set against the volcano view, and outdoor showers. If you want full privacy and are travelling with friends or family, splurge on Kataza House, the four-bedroom villa with private chef, butler, pool and dedicated trekking guides.

Day by Day
Your 7-night honeymoon itinerary
Arrival in Kigali
Land at Kigali International, meet the Singita driver and transfer the 2.5 hours to Kwitonda. Arrive in time for a fireside lunch, settle into your suite and enjoy a sunset cocktail on the deck as the volcanoes glow pink.
First gorilla trek
Pre-dawn breakfast at the lodge, then drive to the park headquarters at Kinigi for the briefing. Trek to a habituated family — the moderate Sabyinyo Silverbacks group is a favourite. Return for a long bath, spa treatment and a candlelit dinner in your suite.
Second gorilla trek + reforestation
Most couples book two permits — different family, different terrain. Afterwards, join Singita's reforestation team to plant indigenous trees in the buffer zone you helped fund just by being here.
Golden monkey trek + spa day
An easier morning trek to the playful golden monkeys of the bamboo zone. Back at the lodge, book the signature couples treatment in the spa, then dinner in the wine cellar.
Dian Fossey hike
A more strenuous half-day hike up Mount Bisoke to the grave of Dian Fossey at the Karisoke Research Camp ruins — moving and beautiful. Sundowners and a private bush dinner on return.
Cultural day in Musanze
Visit the Gorilla Guardians Village, the Musanze caves and a local coffee washing station. End with a hands-on Rwandan cooking class in the Kwitonda kitchen garden.
Farewell
Slow breakfast on the deck, last walk through the indigenous tree nursery, then transfer back to Kigali for your flight home — or extend with two nights at Magashi Camp in Akagera for the Big 5.
Honest Assessment
What to know before you book
Gorilla permits are USD 1,500 per person per day and must be secured months in advance — Singita handles this but build it into your budget.
Altitude is around 2,500m and treks can involve steep, muddy terrain; reasonable fitness is required.
There is no beach and no pool in the conventional sense — this is a fireplace-and-volcano lodge, not a swim-up-bar lodge.
Rates are all-inclusive but exclude permits, premium wines and helicopter transfers.
Weather is cool and often wet; pack layers and waterproof boots even in dry season.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Good for honeymooners?
Exceptional. Private decks, double fireplaces, in-suite dining, couples spa and the once-in-a-lifetime shared experience of meeting a gorilla family make this the strongest honeymoon pick in Rwanda.
Best time to visit?
June to September and December to February are the dry seasons and easiest for trekking. The shoulder months are quieter and the forest is greener but expect rain and mud.
Book in advance?
Yes — at least 9 to 12 months ahead. There are only 8 suites and gorilla permits are capped at 96 per day across all of Rwanda.
Adults-only?
No, but children under 15 cannot trek gorillas, so the lodge skews heavily toward couples and small adult groups.
Best room type?
A standard Kwitonda Suite is more than enough for two; upgrade to Kataza House only if you want a fully private 4-bedroom villa with chef and butler.
How to get there?
Fly to Kigali International (KGL), then a 2.5-hour scenic road transfer arranged by Singita. Helicopter transfers are available for an extra fee.
