Le verdict

Cela vaut-il le coup pour votre voyage de noces ?

Britannia is Norway's grandest restored hotel — a 1897 belle-époque palace brought back to flawless life in 2019, with a Michelin-star restaurant in a chandeliered mirror hall and a palm court that has been pouring afternoon tea for over a century. For a honeymoon, it is the most romantic city hotel in central Norway: rich, theatrical and steeped in history, yet contemporary in service. It is also the perfect base for the Trondheim leg of a slow rail journey north toward the Arctic Circle.

Recommandation de chambre

Quelle chambre réserver

Sélection d'expert
à partir de la fourchette $400–$1,100/nuit

Choose a Junior Suite or one of the corner Premier rooms overlooking Dronningens gate. They keep the original belle-époque proportions, with curved windows, freestanding tubs and richly upholstered sitting areas. The Britannia Suite is the splurge — two bedrooms, a private dining room and a butler — but a Junior Suite delivers 90% of the romance for half the price.

Jour par jour

Itinéraire de 7 nuits pour votre voyage de noces

1

Arrival in Trondheim

Fly into Trondheim Værnes (TRD) and transfer the 35 minutes to the hotel. Check into your Junior Suite, take a glass of champagne under the Palmehaven palm court and walk to the riverfront to see the colourful Bakklandet warehouses lit at dusk.

2

Nidaros Cathedral & Old Town

Spend the morning at Nidaros Cathedral, Norway's national sanctuary and the world's northernmost medieval cathedral. Cross the Gamle Bybro 'old town bridge' for lunch at Bakklandet, then return for an afternoon at Britannia Spa with its 25-metre indoor pool.

3

Speilsalen tasting menu

A slow Nordic morning with breakfast in bed, a walk through the Royal Residence Stiftsgården, and an afternoon coffee tasting at Jacobsen & Svart. The evening is the headline event: the multi-course Michelin tasting at Speilsalen, served under crystal chandeliers.

4

Munkholmen island

Take the small ferry to Munkholmen, a 1000-year-old monastery-turned-fortress on a tiny island in the fjord. Picnic, swim if the weather allows, and return for an evening cocktail at Jentoft, the hotel's bar named after the founder.

5

Røros day trip or fjord cruise

Either drive to UNESCO mining town Røros (2.5 hours) for a day among 17th-century wooden cottages, or take a Trondheimsfjord cruise. Back at Britannia, dinner at Speilsalen's casual sister Brasserie Britannia.

6

Spa day & afternoon tea

A full slow day in the hotel: morning sauna and pool, lunch in suite, then full afternoon tea in the glass-domed Palmehaven with live piano. Optional: book the cigar lounge for a quiet nightcap with Norwegian aquavit.

7

Farewell breakfast

Final breakfast in Palmehaven under the palms, a last walk along the Nidelva river, then transfer to TRD for onward travel — many couples continue north on the Nordland Railway toward Bodø and the Lofoten Islands.

Évaluation honnête

Ce qu'il faut savoir avant de réserver

!

Trondheim is small — two nights here is enough for most couples; combine with fjords or Lofoten for a full week.

!

Speilsalen books out 8-10 weeks ahead; reserve before arrival.

!

Some rooms face an internal courtyard — request street- or river-facing if natural light matters.

!

Norwegian winter darkness means short sightseeing days from November to February.

FAQ

Questions fréquentes

Good for honeymooners?

Yes — Britannia is one of the most romantic restored hotels in Scandinavia, with a famously elegant afternoon tea and a Michelin tasting menu under chandeliers that feels custom-built for a milestone trip.

Best time to visit?

May to September for long northern days and harbour walks. December for a candlelit Christmas city break — Trondheim does the season beautifully.

Book in advance?

3-4 months ahead for suites in summer or around Christmas; 8-10 weeks ahead for Speilsalen Michelin reservations.

Adults-only?

No, but the hotel is grown-up in tone. Children are welcome but the spa and Michelin restaurant attract a couples-led clientele.

Best room type?

Junior Suite or corner Premier room with a freestanding bath. The full Britannia Suite is the splurge if you want a butler and private dining room.

How to get there?

Fly into Trondheim Værnes (TRD), 35-minute taxi or airport bus to the hotel. Trondheim is also the northern terminus of the Dovre Railway from Oslo (about 6.5 hours, scenic).
