The Verdict

Worth it for your honeymoon?

Banyan Tree Mayakoba is the all-pool-villa entry on the Mayakoba estate — every one of the 124 accommodations is a freestanding villa with private pool, walled garden, and a sense of total seclusion that the larger Rosewood, with its open campus, does not deliver. This is the choice for couples who prioritise absolute private-villa privacy over shared resort facilities. Banyan Tree's Asian-spa heritage shows in the Rainforest Spa, which is one of the most architecturally distinctive spas in Mexico — a hydro-thermal circuit through stone steam caves and a glass-walled relaxation pavilion in the mangrove. Saffron and the Cantonese restaurant Cha bring serious pan-Asian cooking, unique among Riviera Maya resorts. The beach is shared with Rosewood and Andaz (Mayakoba reciprocity) and equally sargassum-protected. Caveats: the Asian-Mexican fusion aesthetic divides guests — some find it sublime, others find Asian-Buddhist styling odd in a Yucatán setting. The villas are spread across a large mangrove area, requiring buggy or boat transport. Service is excellent but slightly less polished than Rosewood. Best for couples who want a villa with private pool over a suite, and who specifically value the Banyan Tree spa heritage.

Room Recommendation

Which room to book

Expert Pick
from $750–$3,200/night range

Serenity Pool Villa with private plunge pool and walled garden (130 m²). Step up to the Beachfront Pool Villa for direct beach access, or the Presidential Two-Bedroom for a private compound. Avoid the Banyan Pool Villas near the main entrance — they are quieter than the lagoon villas.

Honest Assessment

What to know before you book

!

Asian-Mexican fusion is divisive — preview the photos carefully; either you love it or find it surreal.

!

Villas are widely spaced — buggy or bike to restaurants. Less spontaneous than a compact resort.

!

Three on-site restaurants — adequate for 7 nights with Tulum excursion variety.

!

Mid-priced villa categories book 4–6 months ahead for January and February.

!

Service is excellent but a half-step less personal than Rosewood next door.
