Cenote diving at Dos Ojos or Gran Cenote
The Yucatán is honeycombed with cenotes — collapsed limestone caves filled with crystalline freshwater. Dos Ojos and Gran Cenote (near Tulum) are the most beautiful. The light beams cutting through the cathedral chambers are unlike anything else in nature.
Go early — first slot 9am. By 11am tour buses arrive and the magic evaporates. Bring a GoPro. Avoid weekends. Hotel Esencia and Rosewood arrange private guides.

Snorkel with sea turtles at Akumal
Akumal bay (between Playa del Carmen and Tulum) has a resident green sea turtle population that grazes on the seagrass in shallow water year-round. Swimming with them is genuinely moving, not a contrived experience.
Guides are required by Mexican law now — for turtle protection. Go at 8am before the day-trippers. The Centro Ecológico Akumal trains the legitimate operators. Wear a life vest (also required) so you don't kick the turtles.

When to go to Riviera Maya
The honest truth: the Riviera Maya has one perfect season and you should plan around it ruthlessly. November 1 to April 15 is the only window that delivers what you came for — clear water, no sargassum on the beach, low hurricane risk, dry air. Within that, the first two weeks of November and the first two weeks of January are the secret-best for the rare combination of perfect weather and not-yet-peak prices. February is peak-perfect but everyone knows it — Hartwood is fully booked, Rosewood lagoon suites are sold out. Mid-April is the last good window before sargassum begins. May through October the beach can become a stinking yellow-brown mat of decomposing seaweed and even the best hotels with full-time rakers cannot win. Hotels will tell you sargassum is "manageable." It is not. Do not honeymoon here outside the dry season.

Fly into Cancún (CUN), not Tulum (TQO)
Tulum's new airport opened in 2023 but has limited routes and inflated taxi prices. Cancún is the practical hub for everywhere on the Riviera Maya. CUN to Tulum is a 90-minute private transfer ($120–$180), CUN to Mayakoba is 50 minutes.
November is the secret best month
Sargassum has cleared, hurricane season ends Nov 1, the dry season has begun, and pre-holiday prices haven't kicked in yet. The first three weeks of November are the single best window of the year. Almost no one books then.
Pre-book Hartwood, Posada Margherita, and Casa Jaguar before you board the plane
These three Tulum restaurants are booked solid every night November–April. Hartwood opens 30 days in advance, Posada Margherita 21 days. Set a calendar alert. Hotel concierges cannot get you in last-minute — this is not a "ask the concierge" market.
Avoid the highway, hire a hotel car for cenotes
Highway 307 is fine in daylight but you don't want to drive Mexican roads at night. Hotel-arranged car-and-driver for cenote and ruin day trips is $250–$400 per day and the right call. Cell coverage drops in cenote zones.
Sargassum varies hotel-to-hotel — choose carefully
Even within the same week, some beaches have sargassum and some don't — depends on currents and seaweed-barrier installations. Hotel Esencia, Mayakoba, and Nizuc invest heavily in barriers. Tulum hotels generally less. Check sargassum-monitor sites the month before.
