The Verdict

Worth it for your honeymoon?

Hotel Bayerischer Hof is Munich’s grande dame — a 337-room family-owned (since 1897) grand hotel in the heart of the Altstadt facing the Frauenkirche, founded in 1841 as a private palace and operated continuously since then by the Volkhardt family, now in its fifth generation. The proposition is the unique combination of grand-historic architecture, serious operational scale (337 rooms with 70+ suites, five restaurants, the famous Falk’s Bar, the Night Club basement jazz venue), and what may be Munich’s most extraordinary rooftop: the open-air rooftop pool with panoramic views to the Frauenkirche towers, supplemented by the Garden Atrium and the Blue Spa designed by Andrée Putman. The dining is the second proposition: Atelier (chef Jan Hartwig, three Michelin stars from 2018 to 2023; the chef left in 2023 and the star situation is now in transition under new chef Anton Gschwendtner) is one of the most celebrated dining rooms in Germany; Garden Restaurant, the Trader Vic’s in the basement, and the Falk’s Bar round out the property. The honeymoon proposition is the historic grandeur and full-amenity scale — at Bayerischer Hof you get the full grand-hotel experience with no compromises on amenities. The Mascha-Voss Suites and the Penthouse Suites with Frauenkirche views are some of the most spectacular hotel rooms in Germany. Caveats: at 337 rooms it’s a large hotel with conference and group business — service consistency can drop at peak; the room types vary considerably from charming to disappointing — choose suites or Master Rooms, avoid the cheaper standard categories; and the dining situation at Atelier is currently transitional (verify current Michelin status before counting on it as the Michelin night). The honeymoon move is a Master Suite or Mascha-Voss Suite, 2–3 nights, with a rooftop pool morning and Atelier or Tantris dinner.

Room Recommendation

Which room to book

Expert Pick
from $600–$3,000/night range

A Mascha-Voss Suite (designed by the late designer Mascha Maria Voss) with Frauenkirche view is the honeymoon room — generous square footage, separate sitting room, marble bathroom. For full splurge, the Penthouse Suite. Avoid the cheaper standard categories — they’re fine but lose the grandeur.

Subject: Honeymoon inquiry — Hotel Bayerischer Hof

Dear Bayerischer Hof reservations,

We’d like 2 to 3 nights for the city portion of our honeymoon [DATES] in a Mascha-Voss Suite or Master Room with Frauenkirche view.

Questions:
1. Honeymoon arrival turndown (champagne, flowers)?
2. Atelier reservation on the first evening (current Michelin status please)?
3. Couples’ treatment at the Blue Spa with rooftop pool access?
4. Bayerische Staatsoper ticket coordination?
5. Transfer to our alpine hotel on departure day?

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Good for honeymooners?

Yes for the city portion of a Bavarian honeymoon — particularly for couples who want grand-historic Munich. Choose suites; skip standard rooms.

Best time to visit?

May, June, September for Munich. December for Christmas markets — the rooftop pool at Christmas with the Frauenkirche lit is iconic. Avoid Oktoberfest unless that’s the trip.

Book in advance?

Mascha-Voss Suites and Master Rooms for peak months and December: 3–5 months ahead. Penthouse: 6–9 months. Oktoberfest: 12 months.

Adults-only?

No. Family-friendly grande dame — but the suite floors are naturally adult-skewing.

Best room type?

Mascha-Voss Suite or Master Room with Frauenkirche view. For full splurge, Penthouse. Avoid cheap standard rooms at this price.

How to get there?

Munich airport (MUC) 30 min by taxi or 40 min by S-Bahn (Marienplatz station 3-min walk from hotel).
