The Verdict

Worth it for your honeymoon?

Mandarin Oriental Munich is the most consistently polished luxury hotel in central Munich — a boutique 73-room property in a Neo-Renaissance former ballroom building from 1880, two blocks east of the Marienplatz in the heart of the Altstadt, operated by Mandarin Oriental since 1992 and substantially refreshed in 2023. The proposition is the rare combination in central Munich of a boutique-scaled luxury hotel (73 rooms is small for a major city centre) with the Mandarin operational standard (consistently among the top three urban hotels in Germany in surveys), a rooftop pool with city panorama, and a location that puts the entire Munich Altstadt and the major institutions (Bayerische Staatsoper, the Residenz, the Hofbräuhaus, the Englischer Garten) within a 10-minute walk. The Matsuhisa Munich restaurant in the hotel (Nobu Matsuhisa’s only continental European outpost) is one of the city’s top three restaurants for Japanese-Peruvian dining. The rooftop bar and pool are the city’s most exclusive — the small heated pool sits in a glass enclosure with views to the Frauenkirche towers and the Bavarian Alps on clear days. The honeymoon proposition is the urban half of a Bavarian trip: 2–3 nights here in central Munich for Opera, the Pinakothek museums, the beer halls, and the Englischer Garten, before continuing to Schloss Elmau for the alpine half. Caveats: not a destination honeymoon hotel on its own (city hotels rarely are); the rooms in the original building vary considerably in size (some are compact for the price); and the location, while central, is on a narrow street where the rooms can hear morning street noise. But for the urban half of a Bavarian honeymoon, the Mandarin Oriental Munich is the obvious call.

Room Recommendation

Which room to book

Expert Pick
from $700–$3,500/night range

A Premier Suite with the Frauenkirche-tower view is the honeymoon room — generous square footage, separate sitting area, marble bathroom. For smaller budget, a Deluxe Room with city view. Avoid courtyard-facing rooms — the view is the differentiator.

Honest Assessment

What to know before you book

!

Rooms in the historic 1880 building vary considerably in size — confirm specific category and ask for photos. Some Deluxe rooms are compact for the price.

!

Munich is busy with conferences and trade fairs at peak times — the hotel can feel businessy mid-week in October/November. Plan honeymoon dates around the trade-fair calendar.

!

Not a destination honeymoon hotel on its own — pair with Schloss Elmau, Bachmair Weissach, or a Berchtesgaden property.

Subject: Honeymoon inquiry — Mandarin Oriental, Munich

Dear Mandarin Oriental Munich reservations,

We’d like 2 to 3 nights for the city portion of our honeymoon [DATES] in a Premier Suite with Frauenkirche view.

Questions:
1. Honeymoon arrival turndown (champagne, dessert)?
2. Matsuhisa dinner reservation on the first evening?
3. Couples’ treatment at the spa with rooftop pool access?
4. Bayerische Staatsoper opera/ballet ticket coordination?
5. Transfer to Schloss Elmau on departure day?

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Good for honeymooners?

Yes for the urban half of a Bavarian honeymoon (2–3 nights). The Premier Suite, Matsuhisa, and Englischer Garten access are the trifecta.

Best time to visit?

May, June, September are ideal for Munich. December for Christmas markets at Marienplatz. Avoid Oktoberfest (mid-Sept to early Oct) unless that’s the trip — prices triple.

Book in advance?

Premier Suite for peak months and December: 3–5 months ahead. Standard Deluxe: 2–3 months. Oktoberfest: 9–12 months ahead.

Adults-only?

No. Standard 5-star urban hotel — families minimal at this scale and price.

Best room type?

Premier Suite with Frauenkirche view. For smaller budget, Deluxe Room with city view. Skip courtyard rooms.

How to get there?

Munich airport (MUC) 30 min by taxi or 45 min by S-Bahn (S1 or S8) — Marienplatz station is 5-min walk from hotel.
