Schloss Elmau Luxury Spa Retreat & Cultural Hideaway

The Verdict
Worth it for your honeymoon?
Schloss Elmau is the most ambitious luxury hotel in Germany and arguably in the Alps — a 19th-century manor and a contemporary Retreat wing in a quiet alpine valley between Garmisch-Partenkirchen and the Wetterstein massif, owned and operated by the Müller-Elmau family (Dietmar Mueller-Elmau is the hands-on owner-operator), holding two G7 summits (2015 and 2022), and consistently ranked the best resort in Germany and one of the top 25 hotels in the world. The proposition is the genuine combination of five things that almost never co-exist: a concert hall that programmes 200+ classical and jazz concerts a year with international musicians (Anne-Sophie Mutter, Christian Tetzlaff, Yo-Yo Ma have all played here); a Michelin-starred restaurant (Luce d’Oro, two stars) plus six other excellent restaurants on the property; five separate spas including the adults-only Retreat Spa (the Retreat wing is configured as a couples-only experience with no children at all); a 9-mile network of immediate-access walking trails directly into the Wetterstein; and a library with 12,000 books and the largest chess collection in Bavaria. The hotel’s structure deliberately separates the family hotel (the historic schloss) from the adults-only Retreat wing — which is the honeymoon side and the way you book this hotel for a honeymoon. The Retreat has its own restaurants, its own spa with rooftop infinity pool (the Badehaus, with arguably the most photographed pool view in the Alps), and its own dedicated entrance and lobby. Caveats are limited: the price is genuine ultra-luxury (Retreat Junior Suites from €900+ a night with half-board); the location is genuinely remote (1h from Munich by car, no useful public transport from Klais station); and the breadth of programming means you’ll want to plan around specific concerts and treatments rather than just turn up. But for couples whose honeymoon image is alpine luxury, serious wellness, world-class music, and a Michelin tasting menu — Schloss Elmau is the best honeymoon in Germany.

Room Recommendation
Which room to book
A Retreat Junior Suite in the adults-only Retreat wing (private balcony, mountain view, Badehaus access, no children encounters) is the honeymoon room. For the full splurge, the Retreat Suite or the Penthouse. Avoid the schloss family-hotel rooms — they’re lovely but you’ll encounter families.

Honest Assessment
What to know before you book
Not adults-only as a whole property — but the Retreat wing operates as adults-only with separate facilities and entry. Book Retreat, not Schloss.
Remote alpine location — 1h 30min drive from Munich; no useful direct rail. Drive or chauffeur transfer is essential.
Concert programme is the highlight — book at the time of room reservation, not on arrival. Look at the Schloss Elmau calendar to plan around specific musicians.
