The Verdict

Worth it for your honeymoon?

Kempinski Hotel Berchtesgaden (the property formerly operated as InterContinental Berchtesgaden, transitioned to Kempinski management in 2021) is the most dramatically located luxury hotel in the eastern Bavarian Alps — a 138-room contemporary resort built into a south-facing slope at 1,000m above the town of Berchtesgaden, with panoramic terraces facing Watzmann (Germany’s third-highest mountain), the Königssee lake immediately below, and Salzburg (in Austria) visible across the valley. The proposition is the location and the view: the infinity pool projects out from the hillside with the most photographed alpine view in Bavaria; the outdoor terrace at the bar is one of the great hotel sunset spots in the Alps; and the proximity to Lake Königssee (15 min by car or hotel shuttle), the Eagle’s Nest, the Berchtesgaden salt mines, and Salzburg (25 min) makes this the perfect base for the eastern Bavarian Alps. The spa is large (3,400m² over two floors, indoor and outdoor pools, multiple saunas, treatment rooms with mountain views) and well-run; the Restaurant 1888 is the formal dining room (one Michelin star at times under chef Ulrich Heimann). The honeymoon move is a Premier Suite with Watzmann view, 3–4 nights, with a Königssee boat day and a Salzburg day trip. Caveats: the hotel is contemporary (1990s built, refreshed multiple times since) so couples wanting historic atmosphere should look elsewhere; the 138-room scale and conference business mean the lobby and pool deck are busy at peak; and the access road up the mountain is steep and tight in winter (snow-tyre season). But for the panoramic-mountain-view alpine honeymoon — there’s no equivalent in eastern Bavaria.

Best for couples who…
  • Prioritise spa & wellness
Skip if you…
  • Need a strictly adults-only resort
  • Want a direct beachfront
  • Prefer boutique & intimate properties

Room Recommendation

Which room to book

Expert Pick
from $450–$1,500/night range

A Premier Suite with Watzmann view (south-facing, balcony, mountain panorama) is the honeymoon room. For full splurge, the Presidential Suite. Avoid north-facing standard rooms — the mountain view is the entire proposition.

Honest Assessment

What to know before you book

!

Hotel rebranded from InterContinental to Kempinski in 2021 — verify current operating standard via recent reviews.

!

Contemporary 1990s architecture, not historic alpine. For period feel choose a smaller Berchtesgaden inn.

!

Access road is steep and tight in winter — snow tyres are essential. Hotel chauffeur from Munich handles this.

Subject: Honeymoon inquiry — Kempinski Hotel Berchtesgaden

Dear Kempinski Berchtesgaden reservations,

We’d like 3 to 4 nights for our honeymoon [DATES] in a Premier Suite with Watzmann view.

Questions:
1. Honeymoon arrival turndown (champagne, flowers)?
2. Restaurant 1888 reservation on the first evening?
3. Couples’ treatment at the spa with infinity-pool access?
4. Königssee boat-day and Salzburg day-trip arrangements?
5. Chauffeur transfer from Munich or Salzburg airport?
