Janeiro is the boutique antidote to the larger landmark hotels of Rio. Sitting directly on Avenida Delfim Moreira facing Leblon beach, the property is small (just 39 rooms), contemporary, design-led and quietly cool. Leblon itself is the most residential and arguably the most elegant of Rio's beach neighbourhoods — leafy streets, the city's best restaurants, far less of the party energy of Ipanema or the tourist concentration of Copacabana, but the same beautiful Atlantic beach and the iconic Two Brothers (Dois Irmãos) rising at its western end. For honeymooners who want Rio's beach lifestyle without crowds, who plan to eat at Oro and Mee and Sushi Leblon, who would rather sip a sundowner at a quiet rooftop than queue at a famous one, Janeiro delivers. The rooftop bar at sunset, with Dois Irmãos backlit gold over the Atlantic, is one of the city's most romantic moments.

Choose a Deluxe Ocean View room with a private balcony, ideally on a higher floor for the unobstructed view down the curve of Leblon beach to Dois Irmãos. The Penthouse Suite has a generous terrace and is the obvious upgrade for honeymoons; the smaller standard rooms are stylish but the view rooms are the reason to be here.

Is the hotel on the beach?
